The Tomb of Queen Tiyi by Theodore Davis,Gaston Maspero,G. Smith,Edward Ayrton,George Daressy Pdf

From the beginning of the chapter titled: A SKETCH OF QUEEN TIYI'S LIFE § I.- IS THE NEW PLACE THE TOMB OF TIYI, OR OF KHUNIATONU? First of all it must be clearly understood that the vault discovered by Davis is not a real tomb; it is a rough cell in the rock, which has been used as a secret burying-place for a member of the family of the so-called Hæretic Kings, when the reaction in favour of Amon triumphed. The transfer of the mummy from its original tomb at Thebes, or El-Amarna, was devised and made in order to save it from the wrath of victorious sectarians; if this had not been the case, it would have been destroyed or robbed of its treasures. Only two Pharaohs are likely to have been actuated by kind feelings for Khuniatonu - those two who were connected with his family, Ai and Tuatankhamanu - it was one of them who planned and executed the operation. That he succeeded in carrying it out secretly is evident from the fact that, while the Tombs of the Kings were desecrated and plundered completely, this place, with its wealth of gold, remained concealed and untouched until last year. The whole furniture was still in it, ready to bear witness as to the name and rank of its owner. When subsequently tested, its evidence was both obscure and conflicting. Such of the small objects as were inscribed bore the name of Amenothes III and of his wife Tiyi, proving that the set of tiny pots, boxes, tools, fictitious offerings, in enamelled stone or glazed pottery, were the property of the queen. The big catafalque, in which the body had been borne to its resting-place on the day of the burial, belonged to the same lady, and its inscriptions state that King Khuniatonu had "made it for the king's mother, great wife of the king, Tiyi." So far, so good, and there seemed to be no possible ground for doubting that the tomb was Tiyi's; but when we came to examine the mosaic coffin and the sheets of gold in which the mummy was wrapped, we found that their legends asserted the mummy to be no other than Khuniatonu himself. It was very badly preserved, having been soaked in water and partly crushed by a block which had fallen from the roof, so that what remained of it was little more than disconnected bones, with a few shreds of dried skin and flesh adhering to or hanging from them. Dr. Elliot Smith, who studied the skull minutely, pronounced it to be the skull of a man aged about twenty-five or twenty-six years. Whether or not he be right about the age is a matter for anatomists only to decide; there is evidence, however, that the body discovered in Davis's vault is that of a man, and that man Khuniatonu, if we must accept the testimony of the inscriptions. Such being the facts, how are we to reconcile them and explain satisfactorily the presence of Khuniatonu's body amidst Tiyi's furniture? This paradoxical combination may either have been made on purpose, or be the result of some mistake on the part of the persons who executed the transfer. In the first case, we ought, perhaps, to conjecture that, wishing to prevent any harm being done to the king by some fanatical devotee of Amon, the hiders wanted the people to believe that the body they were burying was Tiyi's: accordingly, they took with it Tiyi's catafalque and Tiyi's small furniture, the only exception being the canopic jars which, from the shape of the face, I assume to have been Khuniatonu's.

Searching for the Lost Tombs of Egypt by Chris Naunton Pdf

An exciting archeological exploration of ancient Egypt that examines the potential for discovering the remaining “lost” tombs of the pharaohs. Tombs, mummies, and funerary items make up a significant portion of the archeological remains that survive ancient Egypt and have come to define the popular perception of Egyptology. Despite the many sensational discoveries in the last century, such as the tomb of Tutankhamun, the tombs of some of the most famous individuals in the ancient world—Imhotep, Nefertiti, Alexander the Great, and Cleopatra—have not yet been found. Archeologist Chris Naunton examines the famous pharaohs, their achievements, the bling they might have been buried with, the circumstances in which they were buried, and why those circumstances may have prevented archeologists from finding these tombs. In Searching for the Lost Tombs of Egypt, Naunton sheds light on the lives of these ancient Egyptians and makes an exciting case for the potential discovery of these lost tombs.

The Millionaire and the Mummies by John M. Adams Pdf

Egypt, The Valley of the Kings, 1905: An American robber baron peers through the hole he has cut in an ancient tomb wall and discovers the richest trove of golden treasure ever seen in Egypt. At the start of the twentieth century, Theodore Davis was the most famous archaeologist in the world; his career turned tomb-robbing and treasure-hunting into a science. Using six of Davis's most important discoveries—from the female Pharaoh Hatshepsut's sarcophagus to the exquisite shabti statuettes looted from the Egyptian Museum not too long ago—as a lens around which to focus his quintessentially American rags-to-riches tale, Adams chronicles the dizzying rise of a poor country preacher's son who, through corruption and fraud, amassed tremendous wealth in Gilded Age New York and then atoned for his ruthless career by inventing new standards for systematic excavation in the field of archaeology. Davis found a record eighteen tombs in the Valley and, breaking with custom, gave all the spoils of his discoveries to museums. A confederate of Boss Tweed, friend of Teddy Roosevelt, and rival of J. P. Morgan, the colorful "American Lord Carnarvon" shared his Newport mansion with his Rembrandts, his wife, and his mistress. The only reason Davis has been forgotten by history to a large extent is probably the fact that he stopped just short of King Tutankhamen's tomb, the discovery of which propelled Howard Carter (Davis's erstwhile employee) to worldwide fame just a few short years later. Drawing on rare and never-before-published archival material, The Millionaire and the Mummies, the first biography of Theodore Davis ever written rehabilitates a tarnished image through a thrilling tale of crime and adventure, filled with larger-than-life characters, unimaginable treasures, and exotic settings.

Americans in Egypt, 1770-1915 by Cassandra Vivian Pdf

The voices of Americans have long been absent from studies of modern Egypt. Most scholars assume that Americans were either not in Egypt in significant numbers during the nineteenth century or had little of importance to say. This volume shows that neither was the case by introducing and relating the experiences and attitudes of 15 American personalities who worked, lived, or traveled in Egypt from the 1770s to the commencement of World War I. Often in their own words, explorers, consuls, tourists, soldiers, missionaries, artists, scientists, and scholars offer a rare American perspective on everyday Egyptian life and provide a new perspective on many historically significant events. The stories of these individuals and their sojourns not only recount the culture and history of Egypt but also convey the domination of the country by European powers and the support for Egypt by a young American nation.

A Passion for Egypt by Julie Hankey Pdf

The biography of Arthur Weigall, the British Egyptologist who was involved in the exploration and conservation of the monuments and antiquities of a region stretching from Luxor to the Sudan border. At a time when Egypt was being ransacked by private collectors and the agents of Western museums, it was said that, without Weigall, much more would have been lost altogether - most notably, the wall paintings in the Tombs of the Nobles. The enthusiasm and energy of the man and of the books and articles he wrote played a large part in popularising Egypt and Egyptology, and in promoting the then radical view that Egypt's antiquities belonged to the Egyptians. When, in 1922, Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered by his old colleague Howard Carter, Weigall came into open conflict with Carter's patron, Lord Carnarvon, for his handling of the question of rights in the tomb, and for his sale of information from it to the London Times. Following Carnarvon's premature death in Egypt, it was Weigall's remarks to the press that led to the notorious story of the 'Curse of the Pharaohs': a myth that persists to this day. Weigall had many talents: he also designed theatre scenery, made films and wrote novels. But his real legacy derives from his passion for Egypt, both ancient and modern - a passion that informs the whole of his compelling story.

The Oxford Handbook of the Valley of the Kings by Richard H. Wilkinson,Kent R. Weeks Pdf

The royal necropolis of New Kingdom Egypt, known as the Valley of the Kings (KV), is one of the most important - and celebrated - archaeological sites in the world. Located on the west bank of the Nile river, about three miles west of modern Luxor, the valley is home to more than sixty tombs, all dating to the second millennium BCE. The most famous of these is the tomb of Tutankhamun, first discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. Across thirty-eight chapters, this handbook locates the Valley of the Kings in space and time, examines individual tombs, their construction, content, development, and significance, reviews modern research and exploration in the valley, and discusses the current status of ongoing issues of preservation and archaeology.
