The focus of this study is upon ecstasy as the confusing antecedent of Corinthian glossolalia. Most commentators accept ecstasy as the most significant characteristic of the Corinthian Christian glossolalic phenomenon. This assumption is questioned in this research, because it needs to be clarified. It is contended that ecstasy is the confusing element because it was characteristic of the contemporary Corinthian mystery religious practice and that that background was carried into the Corinthian church thus colouring Paul’s treatment of the subject. It is not to be seen as an essential element of glossolalia. Most commentators agree that the glossolalic phenomenon in the Acts is different from that at Corinth. What then is a valid charismatic glossolalia? It is contended that the Acts draws attention to the only authentic cases (and they are three) of glossolalia in the Bible. The book of First Corinthians gives a corrective to an abuse, with no clear authentication of a gift. Paul gives guidelines necessitated by the background of religious ecstasy. Hence, instead of proposing ground rules for a valid spiritual expression, it becomes apparent that First Corinthians is giving a restrained corrective against an abuse of contemporary culture that masqueraded as an authentic Christian experience. It is ecstasy that is the confusing element to this picture. It should be added, that the Acts experiences speak of valid one-stage linguistic phenomena, whilst the gift to the church in 1 Corinthians is clearly a two-stage phenomenon. Bergsma, reflecting on the repetitious and almost daily "unsignificant (sic) revelations" of modern glossolalists, believes that they are "misguided or ... presumptuous. It is like the Himalayan Mountain in obstetrical labour and producing a mouse!” The preoccupation and emphasis is out of all proportion to the minimal benefits derived, and indeed the mischief it generates. The overall significance of the study is to provide a basis for authenticating a valid glossolalic expression, and all this comes from the foundation of the test case in Corinth, which in turn is dependent upon an understanding of ecstasy in the antecedent Mystery Religions of Corinthian contemporary society. Dr Clifford Wilson - himself a prolific author – urged: “Whatever else happens, you must publish the historic material, there are very few people who have any idea of the true background of glossolalia within their denominations”.
Eschatology is only a part of the total program of God. We need to gain the perspective of God’s plan from everlasting to everlasting. Jesus Christ is the Alpha and Omega—the Beginning and the End. The study of the Second Coming forces the enquirer to reflect on the whole picture of the comprehensive plan of God for the redemption of the world, with a very clear sense of direction from the Creation of the world, through the events of the Cross, through to the Coming of Christ to reign on the earth. To trivialise the Second Coming, is to demean the whole program of God, and to thereby debase my existence and purpose as a Christian. Further, it demeans the whole of God’s revelation through His word the Bible. Unashamedly the Word of God is quoted extensively throughout this book. It is the only authority for the whole scenario of God’s plan. This book is comprehensive in its coverage of the whole spectrum of the Kingdom of God, from the creation to the consummation of the kingdom into the Eternal State. A failure to appreciate God’s original purpose for the creation, emasculates any understanding of the direction and purpose of God’s program. God’s Kingdom is expressed in the Old Testament through His chosen people Israel, and they figure significantly in the whole eschatological program. Jesus’ first Coming to inaugurate His Kingdom gives important perspective to His Second Coming to consummate His Kingdom. The creation of the church as a manifestation of His body, is essential to the understanding of the events of the Rapture and the Bema Judgment in particular.
In seeking to promote and support the Calvinist position, Benjamin Warfield sought to champion the cause by making some rather extravagant statements: "He who believes in God without reserve and is determined [free will!??] that God shall be God to him, in all his thinking, feeling, willing - in the entire compass of his life activities, intellectual, moral, spiritual - throughout all his individual, social, religious relations - is, by the force of that strictest of all logic which presides over the outworking of principles into thought and life, by the very necessity of the case, a Calvinist." This can only be described as a ridiculously elitist statement. To believe in God in the terms described, does not even remotely require a person to be a Calvinist. Likewise, the following quote from Warfield is equally elitist in the extreme. "Religion (sic) in its substance is a sense of absolute dependence on God and reaches the height of its conception only when this sense of absolute dependence is complete and all pervasive, in the thought and feeling and life. But when this stage is reached we have just Calvinism". Sadly this statement is arrogant nonsense! Is this position—absolute dependence on God, etc.—not true of EVERY Christian? It is this arrogant approach that raises a serious concern of an elite theology above the Scriptures. Such statements demand that a corrective be given, and hence this book.

We live in a day when God’s Voice is heard less and less. References to God or celebrations––like Christmas and Easter––are devalued and avoided, or reinterpreted for secular reasons. References to God by prayers in Parliament and schools are reduced or removed. Loud, unprincipled voices are being heard instead of the truly authoritative Voice of God. Godless evolution is promoted in most educational institutions, with any believers in, or sympathisers of creation, being dismissed or intimidated. Against all this ignorance, we note that the only true source of authority is this same Almighty God Who is being silenced by the secular society. And the effects of this fact are being felt at all levels of society with exceptionally sad oppression and injustice. All authority as expressed in the functional structures of our society—whether government and civil, employment and education, or domestic and private—is only ever derived authority. No one has authority vested in them by intrinsic right, or by self-achievement. The only ones who claim such authority are dictators, petty tyrants, bully bosses, tyrannical husbands, intolerant drill instructors, and the like. No one serving under them would ever mistake their voice as even remotely expressing the Voice of the true God. The one-and-only true and sovereign God, Who alone possesses authority, is loving, caring, compassionate, patient, just, longsuffering, instructive. How can this God’s character be conveyed to our society? Only through the derived authority expressed by Christians in the functional structures of society. Others who have imbibed the Judeo-Christian ethic, will no doubt also express from their background, something of God’s character as well. The need of the hour, is for The Voice of God to be heard at all levels of society.
It is common parlance to refer to a departed loved who has supposedly “gone up there”, as one who is now “looking down”, presumably “from heaven”. And no regard is paid to the rotation of the earth’s axis at that time, or the position of the earth in its orbit around the sun! So where is “up”? Or “down”? Is heaven “up there”, or “out there”, or “down here”? These questions only confuse the issue because this is to think spatially instead of relationally. We pray: Our Father in heaven (Matthew 6:9). That statement implies location, but where is that? We further pray: 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:9, emphasis added. Implicit to this prayer is that we desire to have God’s sovereign rule (His kingdom) and His will operating in undivided application on earth as it is currently operating in heaven. This implies a future expectancy for this earth, as well as a particular location—both now and then! If we glibly refer to heaven as being “where God is”, then since God is everywhere, we are already in heaven—because God is here!! And if God is everywhere—spatially—then where does Satan fit in? No, we can’t argue spatially. God is sovereign and reigns supreme over all things—Satan included. And if God is everywhere—spatially—then where is the lake of fire? “God in heaven” is the being of God apart from sin—God in His perfect holiness, and where He reigns supreme. But WE are not NOW in heaven as the bible understands—even though God is also here—or we have no future hope! There is nothing more to be achieved. Paul is clear: 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 1 Corinthians 15:19. There is much more!!
At most evangelistic (as opposed to evangelical) meetings, the preacher is at pains to demonstrate that all are sinners, and that each person needs to repent of his own (personal) sin, and to individually accept the redemptive sacrifice of Christ for himself. Respondees are usually counselled using verses like Ezekiel 18:4 (The soul who sins is the one who will die) and Romans 3:23 (For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God). Deuteronomy 24:16 could be added: Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.But in many cases there is apparent unwitting duplicity. Although personal culpability for sin has been enjoined on the sinner, the common belief is that it is really Adam's sin that is the problem. Adam's sin has caused all men to be condemned, not in fact their own sin. If true, that is deception in evangelism (even if unwitting).More basic, the general picture of salvation in the context of the doctrine of original sin, is that all men have become sinners, not so much on their own account, but in some way due to their descending from Adam, and that Christ's one death on the cross accounts for all sins of all men of all time (unless one has a theory of limited atonement). This general statement, in spite of voluminous attempted theological reasoning, seems to fall short of adequately addressing a number of issues of a significant and disturbing theological nature. If Adam sinned a sin for which he alone was responsible, why should any other man also be held culpable for Adam's sin? (This is the problem of "Alien Guilt"). How can God be considered just when He is deemed to have condemned all men of all time for one man's indiscretion? Is the individual man responsible for his own sin, or is he Condemned Already?Alternatively and significantly, if an individual man is held to be responsible and culpable for his own sin, when did he first sin in order to become a sinner, thus deserving of spiritual separation from God? We must identify a CAUSATIVE sin which takes a man from innocence to being a sinner, and when this took place. Was it at birth, by the act of conception (which would remove his personal culpability for this causative sin), after birth, at some nebulous "age of accountability," or at some other time? This question must be answered.Further, if Adam's sin has led to my condemnation, how can I repent of Adam's sin since it is not my own sin? How then can I become a Christian if I am condemned for Adam's sin rather than my own? I can't repent of Adam's sin. THIS IS A PIVOTAL CONSIDERATION.Any adequate doctrine of original sin, must be able to show, not only the universality of sin, but also the individual culpability of each man for his own sin, and that he is therefore justly condemned on his own account. Only thus can we be honestly evangelistic.These questions will be addressed, seeking to establish in particular, the individual culpability and responsibility of each man in the process of becoming a sinner (the causative sin), and his personal culpability in his life as a sinner. Subsequently, in volume two, after a person becomes a Christian, we will address his personal culpability in his Christian walk. Simultaneously in each of these scenarios, the justice and righteousness of God will be demonstrated, both in His condemnation of all mankind for original sin (the causative sin), and also in His calling of each Christian to full personal accountability for his actions and thoughts. Finally, in this volume, we will see that the one death of Christ on the cross is sufficient for the one sin of all men.

This verse expresses in a quite convincing way, the last word on discovering the will of God: Let the peace of God continually act as umpire in your hearts, deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds (Colossians 3:15, adapted). But this is not a privilege for anyone, as if it were some semi-magic trick to discover God’s will. It is premised upon a deep and meaningful personal relationship with Christ. That relationship is the result of the conversion experience, and results in a life of growing into Christ’s likeness—the process of sanctification. The expression of that life is then found in true Christian worship, with its commitment to God and the desire to live in obedience to Him—doing His will. That is the theme of this book.

Is there a super prayer language? Somebody is wrong. Either the gift of tongues was intended to be a more intimate way for us to pray, or the modern tongues movement (glossaism) is one of the greatest frauds in Christianity. In this study we defend the following: - Glossaists cannot match the biblical attributes of the gift. - The definition of "tongues" has significantly changed even in glossaism due to embarrassment, not exegesis of Scripture. - In 1 Corinthians 14, the Apostle Paul was attempting to eliminate the same pagan, counterfeit "private prayer language" version of "tongues" that is occurring today. - Glossaism has no answer for the Apostle's clear statement: "Tongues are a [miraculous] sign for unbelievers" (1 Cor 14:21). Rather, the counterfeit version today makes Christians look crazy, just as Paul warned. - The early Church testified universally to the cessation of the gift of tongues. - Legitimate explanations for the current "tongues" phenomena are alarming.
