Survey and expository articles by leading experts in their corresponding fields are included, and the volume also features selected high quality papers exploring new results and trends in Muckenhoupt-Sawyer theory, orthogonal polynomials, trigonometric series, approximation theory, Bellman functions and applications in differential equations. Graduate students and researchers in analysis will be particularly interested in the articles which emphasize remarkable connections between analysis and analytic number theory. The readers will learn about recent mathematical developments and directions for future work in the unexpected and surprising interaction between abstract problems in additive number theory and experimentally discovered optical phenomena in physics. This book will be useful for number theorists, harmonic analysts, algorithmists in multi-dimensional signal processing and experts in physics and partial differential equations.

Metric Modular Spaces by Vyacheslav Chistyakov Pdf

Aimed toward researchers and graduate students familiar with elements of functional analysis, linear algebra, and general topology; this book contains a general study of modulars, modular spaces, and metric modular spaces. Modulars may be thought of as generalized velocity fields and serve two important purposes: generate metric spaces in a unified manner and provide a weaker convergence, the modular convergence, whose topology is non-metrizable in general. Metric modular spaces are extensions of metric spaces, metric linear spaces, and classical modular linear spaces. The topics covered include the classification of modulars, metrizability of modular spaces, modular transforms and duality between modular spaces, metric and modular topologies. Applications illustrated in this book include: the description of superposition operators acting in modular spaces, the existence of regular selections of set-valued mappings, new interpretations of spaces of Lipschitzian and absolutely continuous mappings, the existence of solutions to ordinary differential equations in Banach spaces with rapidly varying right-hand sides.

Classical Groups and Related Topics by Alexander Hahn,Donald G. James,Zhexian Wan Pdf

During his lifetime, L. K. Hua played a leading role in and exerted a great influence upon the development in China of modern mathematics, both pure and applied. His mathematical career began in 1931 at Tsinghua University where he continued as a professor for many years. Hua made many significant contributions to number theory, algebra, geometry, complex analysis, numerical analysis, and operations research. In particular, he initiated the study of classical groups in China and developed new matrix methods which, as applied by him as well as his followers, were instrumental in the successful attack of many problems. To honor his memory, a joint China-U.S. conference on Classical Groups and Related Topics was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing in May 1987. This volume represents the proceedings of that conference and contains both survey articles and research papers focusing on classical groups and closely related topics.

Number Theory and Its Applications in China by Yuan Wang,Chung-Chun Yang Pdf

Of all modern mathematical forms, number theory is one of the earliest to be explored in China and is the one to which the Chinese have made their greatest contributions. Yan Wu-zhi first introduced number theory into China in the 1920s. Particularly influential in the field was Hua Loo-keng, who studied with G. H. Hardy and made significant contributions in the areas estimating complete exponential sums, Waring's problems, Tarry's problems, and Vinogradov's method. Interest in number theory continued to flourish following the founding of the People's Republic of China. The most noted accomplishments by Chinese mathematicians were focused on the solution of Goldbach's Conjecture and on the sieve method. Although the Cultural Revolution interrupted research in number theory for more than 10 years, the field is now growing in China.A number of universities now have advanced programs in the subject and a wide variety of topics, including the applications of number theory. This volume contains nine survey articles and three articles on current research. The collection emphasizes the accomplishments of Chinese number theorists during 1949-1979, a period when correspondence between China and other countries was discouraged. The collection is intended not only to survey the significant contributions of Chinese mathematicians, but also to reflect the latest developments and current state of research in number theory in China.

Probability Theory and Its Applications in China by Shijian Yan,Chung-Chun Yang,Jiagang Wang Pdf

Probability theory has always been an active field of research in China, but, until recently, almost all of this research was written in Chinese. This book contains surveys by some of China's leading probabilists, with a fairly complete coverage of theoretical probability and selective coverage of applied topics. The purpose of the book is to provide an account of the most significant results in probability obtained in China in the past few decades and to promote communication between probabilists in China and those in other countries. This collection will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in mathematics and probability theory, as well as to researchers in such areas as physics, engineering, biochemistry, and information science. Among the topics covered here are: stochastic analysis, stochastic differential equations, Dirichlet forms, Brownian motion and diffusion, potential theory, geometry of manifolds, semi-martingales, jump Markov processes, interacting particle systems, entropy production of Markov processes, renewal sequences and p-functions, multi-parameter stochastic processes, stationary random fields, limit theorems, strong approximations, large deviations, stochastic control systems, and probability problems in information theory.

Azumaya Algebras, Actions, and Modules by Darrell Haile,James Osterburg Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of a conference in honor of Goro Azumaya's seventieth birhtday, held at Indiana University in Bloomington in May 1990. Professor Azumaya, who has been on the faculty at Indiana University since 1968, has made many important contributions to modern abstract algebra. His introduction and investigation of what have come to be known as Azumaya algebras subsequently stimulated much research on such rings and algebras, as well as applications to geometry and number theory. In addition to honoring Professor Azumaya's contributions, the conference was intended to stimulate interaction among three areas of his research interests: Azumaya algebras, group and Hopf algebra actions, and module theory. Aimed at researchers in algebra, this volume contains contributions by some of the leaders in these areas.

Measure and Measurable Dynamics by Dorothy Maharam-Stone,R. Daniel Mauldin,Rae Michael Shortt,César Ernesto Silva Pdf

Dorothy Maharam Stone's (1917-) contributions to operators and measure algebras has had a profound influence on this area of research. Her career, which has spanned nearly half a century, includes 40 research publications, some of them as recent as 1987. A Ph.D. student of Anna Pell Wheeler at Bryn Mawr College, Stone has been an active force in mathematics research and various professional activities. This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Measure and Measurable Dynamics, held in honor of Stone at the University of Rochester in September 1987. The papers in this collection represent contributions from some of the top experts in this field. Stone's work is surveyed in a number of articles which highlight her foundational results concerning positive operators, the characterization of homo-geneous measure algebras, and disintegrations. In addition, there are research papers in ergodic theory, measure theory, descriptive set theory, and the dynamics of measurable maps. A number of the results in these papers are directly related to Stone's work.
