Personalized Hip and Knee Joint Replacement by Charles Rivière,Pascal-André Vendittoli Pdf

This open access book describes and illustrates the surgical techniques, implants, and technologies used for the purpose of personalized implantation of hip and knee components. This new and flourishing treatment philosophy offers important benefits over conventional systematic techniques, including component positioning appropriate to individual anatomy, improved surgical reproducibility and prosthetic performance, and a reduction in complications. The techniques described in the book aim to reproduce patients’ native anatomy and physiological joint laxity, thereby improving the prosthetic hip/knee kinematics and functional outcomes in the quest of the forgotten joint. They include kinematically aligned total knee/total hip arthroplasty, partial knee replacement, and hip resurfacing. The relevance of available and emerging technological tools for these personalized approaches is also explained, with coverage of, for example, robotics, computer-assisted surgery, and augmented reality. Contributions from surgeons who are considered world leaders in diverse fields of this novel surgical philosophy make this open access book will invaluable to a wide readership, from trainees at all levels to consultants practicing lower limb surgery

Reconstruction of the Knee Joint by S. Niwa,S. Yoshino,M. Kurosaka,Konsei Shino,Sumiki Yamamoto Pdf

More than 20 years have passed since the International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement was held in London in 1974. Prosthetic design and operative technique have been greatly improved since then, and there is now an accepted standard concept of total knee arthroplasty. Thirteen years after the London symposium, another international symposium on total knee replacement was held, this time in Nagoya, Japan, in 1987. Its ambitious objective was to push forward the frontiers of continuous investigation and improve ment of total knee replacement. The fruits of the individual efforts presented at the Nagoya symposium were published in a volume of proceedings entitled Total Knee Replacement. In the years since 1987, further investigations have been conducted in various parts of the world regarding prosthetic design, fixation, long-term radiological follow-up, biomechanical evaluation, and biomaterials research. In knee ligament reconstruc tion, rapid progress has been made in the past five years in clinical practice and fundamental research by means of arthroscopic surgery and tissue transplantation, and we have come close to establishing a standard treatment. Under these circumstances, an international symposium on knee joint reconstruc tion was planned for 1994, again to be held in Nagoya, to provide ample opportunity for exchanging information and sharing clinical experience from around the world.

Joint Arthroplasty by Shinichi Imura,Makoto Wada,Hironori Omori Pdf

The introduction of total joint arthroplasty throughout the world has contributed manifold benefits to patients who suffer from joint diseases. Concurrently, however, there has been an increase in revision surgery. Many orthopedic surgeons agree that durability of prostheses is an eternal problem. In particular, periprosthetic osteolysis recently has been identified as one of the serious problems affecting prosthetic dura bility. To improve durability, osteolysis and many other problems must be investi gated and solved both experimentally and clinically with respect to such aspects as prosthetic material, design, and biological and biomechanical behavior. This book comprises 37 papers that were presented by orthopedic surgeons and biomedical engineers at the 28th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Replace ment Arthroplasty, held in March 1998 in Kanazawa, Japan. The volume is thus a compilation of the latest knowledge about the pathogenesis and reduction of osteolysis and wear, newly developed total hip prostheses, and other current topics of total knee arthroplasty. We earnestly hope that this book will be of benefit to clinicians and researchers, and that it will contribute to the creation of more durable total joint prostheses in the future. Total Knee Replacement by Richard S. Laskin Pdf

Knee replacement can be regarded as the inevitable sequel to hip replacements, the child so to speak, of a brilliant father. As with other children, there were growing pains and a somewhat troubled adolescence, but the mature adult can now stand, proud and unashamed, alongside its distinguished forebear. Total replacement of the knee is now a highly successful operation which has enriched the lives of countless sufferers. Clearly the time is ripe for a definitive work on the subject. Richard Laskin, whose abiding interest and profound knowledge of knee replace ment are well known, has gathered together a team of notable experts who, between them, cover every aspect of the subject. The first section of this book deals with the history of knee replacement, its indications, alternative procedures, biomechanics and materials. Then follows a most important section by Laskin himself, on the surgical technique, the details of which, as he points out in his preface, are more important than differences between the various prostheses. The third section considers the results of several different prostheses and discusses some problem areas. This is a book which surgeons in the field of knee replacement have been waiting for; those with experience will find it of absorbing interest and those who have more recently embarked on the subject will find it an invaluable guide in their quest for perfection. Dr Laskin is to be congratulated on his choice of collaborators and for producing such a masterly compilation.
