Ever since the beginning of the modern phenomenological movement disciplined attention has been paid to various patterns of human experi ence as they are actually lived through in the concrete. This has brought forth many attempts to tind a general philosophical position which can do justice to these experiences without reduction or distQrtion. In France, the best known of these recent attempts have been made by Sartre in his Being and Nothingness and by Merleau-Ponty in his Phenomenol ogy of Perception and certain later fragments. Sartre has a keen sense for life as it is lived, and his work is marked by many penetrating descrip tions. But his dualistic ontology of the en-soi versus the pour-soi has seemed over-simple and inadequate to many critics, and has been seriously qualitied by the author himself in his latest Marxist work, The Critique of Dialetical Reason. Merleau-Ponty's major work is a lasting contri but ion to the phenomenology of the pre-objective world of perception. But asi de from a few brief hints and sketches, he was unable, before his unfortunate death in 1961, to work out carefully his ultimate philosophi cal point of view. This leaves us then with the German philosopher, Heidegger, as the only contemporary thinker who has formulated a total ontology which claims to do justice to the stable results of phenomenology and to the liv ing existential thought of our time.

The physical universe and the relative universe of civilization, best human life and mind are large components of the general to special spectrum and varieties of actual totality. There is massive interaction and potential to actual existence in and out of actual totality. This occurs with increasing time. In the near to mid-term actual totality is stable, and can be treated as a closed set. In the far term both the actual and potential of actual totality undergo adaptation and alteration that best suits their existence with change. With good representation an overview of the difference between actual totality as a stable and relatively exclusive world and potential changes in the long term become clear. The many revolutions that accompany change and the role of language, math, proportions, geometry, design, propelling and compelling forces that determine creation and evolution of life all reveal proofs of actual totality. The core of actual totality, or actual totality proper, is centered on the here and now that proves unity in totality. The individual, groups, and lives of all people more or less contribute to the whole depending on productivity that is most beneficial to the whole. This is largely dependent on knowledge, and its kinds. Universal knowledge of the highest kind is the great dynamo of advancing actual totality. How well actual totality supplies this need is the most important problem and solution of the next hundreds to thousands of years. It is survival over extinction whose success will depend largely on proactive planning, prevention, preparation, management and control. They can be used to guide each and all persons to a better unified world, by actual totality.
TAR FOR MORTAR offers an in-depth exploration of one of literature's greatest tricksters, Jorge Luis Borges. Whether in truth or in fiction, Borges never reaches a stable conclusion about the atomic premises of the universal library - is it possible to find a character set capable of expressing all possible meaning, or do these letters, like his stories and essays, divide from themselves in a restless incompletion? While many readers of Borges see him as presaging our digital technologies, they often give too much credit to our inventions in doing so. Those who elide the necessary incompletion of the Library of Babel compare it to the Internet on the assumption that both are total archives of all possible thought and expression. Though Borges's imaginings lend themselves to digital creativity (libraryofbabel.info is certainly evidence of this), they do so by showing the necessary incompleteness of every totalizing project, no matter how technologically refined.
