Toward an Intercultural Natural History of Brazil by Mariana Françozo Pdf

This volume presents the first extensive census of the surviving copies of the treatise Historia Naturalis Brasiliae in libraries worldwide and examines the book from a variety of interdisciplinary viewpoints. The chapters in this volume are written by scholars from different fields of knowledge, including anthropology, botany, linguistics, literature, book history, medieval and early modern history, and art history. The chapters contextualize the treatise vis-à-vis its predecessors and contemporaneous works of natural history and examine its botanical, zoological, and linguistic accuracy and usefulness in the present day. Put together, the seven chapters of this volume present a kaleidoscope of possibilities of how to re-interpret Piso and Marcgraf’s work within the dynamic context of knowledge-production about the ‘New’ World in the early modern era, while also suggesting approaches to continue profiting from its subject matter in the present day. Toward an Intercultural Natural History of Brazil offers essential reading on the Historia Naturalis Brasiliae, natural history and Latin American history. Ichthyology in Context (1500–1880) by Paul J. Smith,Florike Egmond Pdf

Ichthyology in Context (1500–1880) provides a broad spectre of early modern manifestations of human fascination with fish – “fish” understood in the early modern sense of the term, as aquatilia: all aquatic animals, including sea mammals and crustaceans. It addresses the period’s quickly growing knowledge about fish in its multiple, varied and rapidly changing interaction with culture. This topic is approached from various disciplines: history of science, cultural history, history of collections, historical ecology, art history, literary studies, and lexicology. Attention is given to the problematic questions of visual and textual representation of fish, and pre- and post-Linnean classification and taxonomy. This book also explores the transnational exchange of ichthyological knowledge and items in and outside Europe. Contributors: Cristina Brito, Tobias Bulang, João Paulo S. Cabral, Florike Egmond, Dorothee Fischer, Holger Funk, Dirk Geirnaert, Philippe Glardon, Justin R. Staatenkunde als Weltbeschreibung by Lukas Reddemann Pdf

This book offers the first comprehensive study of the earliest and most notable early modern book series of state descriptions, the ‘Republics’. Printed in Leiden and Amsterdam in the 1620s and 1630s, the Republics evolved into foundational works of early modern political studies. By first tracing the volumes’ circulation and presence in book collections and libraries in the seventeenth century, this study provides fresh insights into their diverse readerships as well as their prominent role in the early modern book market. It then delves into their various academic purposes and their textual, intellectual, and political traditions through selected case studies on the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Empire, and Safavid Persia.

Private Libraries and their Documentation, 1665–1830 by Rindert Jagersma,Helwi Blom,Evelien Chayes,Ann-Marie Hansen Pdf

The essays in Private Libraries and their Documentation revolve around the users and contents of early modern private book collections, and around the sources used to document and study these collections. They take the reader from large-scale projects on historical book ownership to micro-level research conducted on individual libraries, and from analyses of specific types of primary sources to general typologies and overviews by period and by region. As a result of its comparative approach and active engagement with questions regarding the nature, selection and accessibility of sources, the volume serves as a guide to sources and resources in different regions as well as to state-of the-art methods and interpretational approaches. Publication of this volume in open access was made possible by the Ammodo KNAW Award 2017 for Humanities.

A Naturalist in Brazil by Konrad Guenther Pdf

Excerpt from A Naturalist in Brazil: The Record of a Year's Observations of Her Flora, Her Fauna, and Her People He who wishes to derive both enjoyment and profit from a voyage to Brazil must above all become intimate with the natural life of the country. After all, what is it that he most of all wants to know? He wants, I think, to know the name of those great scarlet flowers; and what sort of palms those are that overlook the housetops; and how one can best enjoy a sight of monkeys, parrots and humming birds. But as yet he has no conception of the wonders which are revealed by an insight into the lives of the orchids and the insects! The best Brazilian Baedeker will therefore be a guide to the flora and fauna of Brazil. And the task which the author has proposed to himself in the writing of this book is to produce such a guide. But the glittering virgin forests, the sun-steeped wildernesses, the sea-beaches overshadowed by rustling palm-trees, invariably offered me, when I went forth each day with renewed expectation, so much that was new and lovely and fascinating, that I very soon formed the resolve to share what I had felt and seen with those for whom a voyage to Brazil is impracticable. My own visit to that country followed upon an invitation from the Government of the State of Pernambuco; my task was to combat the insects which were injuring the plantations. My work led me first into the interior of the north eastern States, and later southwards, to 850 Paulo and Jahl'i. It not only gave me an insight into all the branches of Brazilian agriculture and colonization; it led also to friendly intercourse With the Brazil ians, so that I was able to complete my description of the country and its civilization by some account of the character and the customs of its human inhabitants. Introduction to Intercultural Economics by Rongxing Guo Pdf

This book presents a methodological framework for the analysis of intercultural issues frequently misinterpreted by existing theories. It uses a challenge-and-response theory of cultural development to examine the relationship between different natural disasters and threats and the developments of ancient civilizations. The spatial interaction of ancient civilizations is assessed; and four non-linear patterns of intercultural dynamics are presented. Our empirical analyses of the four major ancient civilizations (the Mesopotamian, the Egyptian, the Indus, and the Chinese) focus on intercultural influences as well as how they have shaped the spatial dynamics of the world as a whole. This book also examines various aspects of intercultural economic influences, such as those of culture on international trade. Evidence from a broad panel of nations supports the presumption that high-income trade partners will be less sensitive to the measures of cultural dissimilarity than low-income trade partners between which cultural dissimilarity leads to barriers to international trade. The treatment of linguistic and religious factors as continuous variables in this book has improved past studies in which ‘language’ was treated as one or more dummy variables and ‘religion’ was ignored.
