Toying Around with Science by Bob Friedhoffer Pdf

From the INTRODUCTION. WHAT'S A TOY? HAVE YOU EVER REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT TOYS?When we were small children we played with toys without giving any thought to how they worked. As a matter of fact, most of the toys didn't "work," simply because they were stuffed animals. All that mattered was whether a toy was fun to play with. If it wasn't, we usually put it down and forgot about it.As we grew a bit older, most of us had at least one kind of mechanical toy. The only thing we knew about that toy was that if we didn't wind the key or change the battery, it wouldn't work. When it didn't work, the toy was quickly placed at the bottom of the toy box or the back of the closet. As we got older, we didn't want to play with toys, because we thought, Only babies play with toys. We still had them; only now they weren't called toys. They were called model planes, erector sets, trains, little homemaker baking ovens, kites, bikes, yo-yos, skateboards, and all sorts of other cool "grown-up" names. When I got to be about 9 or 10 years old, I wanted to know what made toys work-the what if and the how come of toys. I'd take them apart and put them back together again. Sometimes I'd even manage to reassemble them without any parts left over. I wrote this book so that kids with the same curiosity will have fun playing with toys and learning about what makes them work. I don't want to scare you away, but at the same time you're learning the innermost secrets of toys, you'll also be learning certain scientific principles. As you read through this book, you'll find that science doesn't have to be boring. Amazingly enough, it can actually be fun....

Fostering Meaningful Learning Experiences Through Student Engagement by Ktoridou, Despo,Doukanari, Elli,Eteokleous, Nikleia Pdf

Educators are continuously seeking ways to engage their students in active learning processes and are faced with challenges that include engaging students in learning activities, promoting meaningful learning experiences, and providing effective experiences for every student. Studies that investigate instructors’ experiences are limited since more focus is given to students. Future research calls for teachers’ innovative contributions in introducing new strategies and teaching approaches to further involve students, increase student attendance in online sessions, and employ a variety of technological tools. Fostering Meaningful Learning Experiences Through Student Engagement is an essential reference source for the latest scholarly information on curriculum development, instructional design, and pedagogical methods for fostering student engagement learning initiatives. The book examines engagement and meaningful learning techniques in both face-to-face and online instruction. Covering topics that include active learning, language learning, teacher experiences, and teacher-student relationships, this book is ideally designed for teachers, instructional designers, curriculum developers, academicians, researchers, professionals, and students that believe that stronger or improved student engagement should be their instructional objectives and wish to engage students in learning activities that promote meaningful learning experiences.

Data Science by Doug Rose Pdf

Learn how to build a data science team within your organization rather than hiring from the outside. Teach your team to ask the right questions to gain actionable insights into your business. Most organizations still focus on objectives and deliverables. Instead, a data science team is exploratory. They use the scientific method to ask interesting questions and run small experiments. Your team needs to see if the data illuminate their questions. Then, they have to use critical thinking techniques to justify their insights and reasoning. They should pivot their efforts to keep their insights aligned with business value. Finally, your team needs to deliver these insights as a compelling story. Insight!: How to Build Data Science Teams that Deliver Real Business Value shows that the most important thing you can do now is help your team think about data. Management coach Doug Rose walks you through the process of creating and managing effective data science teams. You will learn how to find the right people inside your organization and equip them with the right mindset. The book has three overarching concepts: You should mine your own company for talent. You can’t change your organization by hiring a few data science superheroes. You should form small, agile-like data teams that focus on delivering valuable insights early and often. You can make real changes to your organization by telling compelling data stories. These stories are the best way to communicate your insights about your customers, challenges, and industry. What Your Will Learn: Create data science teams from existing talent in your organization to cost-efficiently extract maximum business value from your organization’s data Understand key data science terms and concepts Follow practical guidance to create and integrate an effective data science team with key roles and the responsibilities for each team member Utilize the data science life cycle (DSLC) to model essential processes and practices for delivering value Use sprints and storytelling to help your team stay on track and adapt to new knowledge Who This Book Is For Data science project managers and team leaders. The secondary readership is data scientists, DBAs, analysts, senior management, HR managers, and performance specialists.

More Everyday Engineering by Richard H. Moyer,Susan A. Everett Pdf

What makes a windup toy get up and go? How does an earbud operate? And why does the line you’re waiting in always seem the slowest? Get middle-schoolers engaged in the fascinating science behind familiar items with More Everyday Engineering. Like Everyday Engineering, this compilation brings together activities based on the “Everyday Engineering” columns from NSTA’s award-winning journal Science Scope. Thirteen hands-on investigations focus on three aspects of engineering: designing and building, reverse engineering to learn how something works, and constructing and testing models. Like the original collection, this book is easy to use. Each investigation is a complete lesson that includes in-depth teacher background information, expected sample data, a materials list, and a student activity sheet for recording results. The activities use simple, inexpensive materials you can find in your science classroom or at a dollar store. Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or enrichment-program leader, go beyond the usual bridge-building and egg-drop activities. Spark curiosity with appealing activities that will help middle schoolers understand that engineering truly is a part of their everyday lives.

Design and Science by Leslie Atzmon Pdf

Design and Science addresses the inter-relationship, in both historical and contemporary contexts, between design thinking and design processes and scientific and medical research methods. Contributors address the parallels between research methodologies in design and the sciences, both of which involve the recognition of an issue, conceptualisation of ways to resolve it, and then the modelling and implementation of a viable solution. Much research across various scientific disciplines follows a similar pattern. Thematic sections explore visualisation, visual narrative and visual metaphor; biodesign and biomimicry; makers and users in design and science, and data visualisation, discussing the role of data from nature as an ultimate source of design.
