An Introduction to Vitamins, Minerals and Oxidative Stress by Stefan A. Hulea Pdf

This book presents in simple and concise terms the biological functions of vitamins and minerals, what makes them essential to life and why they must be replenished daily from food. The best food sources for these micronutrients and the daily recommended intakes of vitamins and minerals are also presented. Information on these important micronutrients is all presented in one place (Part I) as opposed to the current text books where it is scattered throughout the text, making its retrieval tedious and time-consuming. In addition, the trace elements get an adequate coverage in contrast to the current texts. The second part introduces the reader to the concept of oxidative stress and the role of free radicals (mainly of oxygen and nitrogen) in the regulation of several biological processes like cellular redox homeostasis, programmed cell death and aging as well as their involvement in many pathological conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. Readers will also learn how reactive molecular species are generated, what their targets are and how cells defend themselves against the deleterious action of free radicals. Despite the growing interest in the research of free radicals involvement in human pathology the current text books treat the subject only sparingly. Our text addresses this issue by giving the topic the attention it deserves.

Essential and Toxic Trace Elements in Human Health and Disease by Ananda S. Prasad Pdf

A comprehensive survey of the latest information on the biochemical, immunological, and clinical aspects of trace elements essential to humans (e.g., zinc, copper, iron, chromium, selenium, and manganese), including methods measuring these elements in human subjects--and common toxic elements, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and aluminum. Addresses the relationships of trace elements to immunity, fluoride metabolism, free radicals, cancer chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, and micronutrient interactions in humans.

Therapeutic Uses of Trace Elements by Jean Nève,Philippe Chappuis,Michel Lamand Pdf

Organized by the French Speaking Society for Study and Research on Essential Trace Elements (SFERETE), the Fifth International Congress on Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology "Therapeutic Uses of Trace Elements" was held February 4-7. 1996, in Meribel (Savoy, France). This resort is situated in the heart of the Three Valleys domain, at the gate way of the beautiful Vanoise National Park. More than 250 participants covering six conti nents attended the meeting. This volume contains the text of plenary lectures and of several oral and poster communications. Trace element deficiencies are not only encountered in developing countries or during malnutrition. Subclinical features are also observed in developed societies where they consti tute a background for an impressive number of pathological states. Preventive and curative treatments with commercial products are often prescribed without reliable studies about their clinical interest or potential efficiency. By contrast empirical approaches such as the catalytic therapy, nutritional and pharmacological aspects of trace elements were emphasized on a sci entific basis to favor their rational therapeutic use.

The Redox State and Circadian Rhythms by Thérèse Vanden Driessche,J.L. Guisset,G.M. Petiau-de Vries Pdf

Although the term redox covers an important number of chemical reactions, biochemists are more familiar with reactions involving the reactions mediated by electron transfer chains associated with respiration, the thiol-disulfide exchanges and the reactions occurring in the presence of free radicals. More recently, the importance of these reactions in the living world and in medicine has been recognized by biochemists, biologists, physiologists, physicians, etc. The importance of the subject in both fundamental and is reflected by the abundance of interesting reviews applied science concerning the subject (Cadenas, 1989, Del Maestro, 1991) and books (Dreosti, 1991; Rice-Evans and Burdon, 1994; Armstrong, 1994) The aim of this chapter is to describe basic reactions known with references to reviews covering special subjects related to redox reactions. Transformation of energy in living organisms is mediated by complex biological systems such as electron transfer chains where the succession of redox reactions provides energy to the organisms. Molecular oxygen or dioxygen is an essential molecule and is the terminal acceptor of electrons during respiration in eukaryotes. In these organisms, the electron transfer chain is located in the mitochondrial membranes and produces adenosine triphosphate (ATP). In anaerobes, the electron acceptor is C0 , S, sulphate or nitrate ions 2 instead of 02.

Role of Trace Elements for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention by Brittmarie Sandström,Paul Walter Pdf

Trace elements are involved in almost every biochemical process in body cells, and inadequacy or unbalance of trace element supply consequently affects a number of physiological functions. Recently developed and improved analytical techniques have strongly contributed to an increased understanding of the role of trace elements for health and disease. This publication gives an excellent overview of the present knowledge concerning their significance in a number of conditions. The specific problems in evaluating trace element intakes and status are highlighted. An adequate nutrient supply is particularly important in periods of growth, especially for infants, children and pregnant women. Improvement of trace element status through food fortification or supplementation is another central theme of this volume. Moreover, the biochemical and epidemiological evidences that they play a role in the prevention of coronary heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis are discussed. To keep track of the exciting developments in the field of trace elements, this publication is important for nutritionists, dietitians, pediatricians, general practitioners, public health professionals and food technologists alike.
