Transportation, Traffic Safety and Health by Hans von Holst,Ake Nygren,Roland Thord Pdf

Modern society is, to a great extent, characterised by a tremendous growth in transportation -- the freedom to travel is a central and fundamental human value. As mobility has increased so have health problems. The number of fatalities and serious injuries caused by road traffic is unacceptable, and, while a downward trend is visible in most countries, there still remains a lot to be done. This collection of contributions by scientists and administrators presents some of the latest findings in the area of mobility and its relation to medical treatment, rehabilitation, public health and prevention.

Driving Lessons by J. Peter Rothe Pdf

With the exception of modern warfare, no other human activity has destroyed as many lives as driving a motor vehicle. Traffic crashes kill and injure thousands of Canadians every year at an incalculable financial and emotional cost to society—but rather than rush to stem this tide of human carnage, policy-makers seem to accept the ghastly toll as the price we pay for mobility. Driving Lessons takes a fresh look at the complexities of the road transportation system in depth, going far beyond the symptomatic, linear, reductionist approach. It challenges current traffic safety paradigms that simply blame the driver or target "villains and scapegoats" like impaired or high-risk drivers. It takes issue with road transportation system management that sometimes puts mobility ahead of the safety of road users. As one researcher notes, human beings will make mistakes, and accordingly, "the road transportation system must be designed so that people’s mistakes do not have disastrous consequences."

The Economic Cost of Motor Vehicle Crashes, 1994 by Lawrence J. Blincoe Pdf

This report presents the results of an analysis of motor vehicle crash costs in 1994. The total economic cost of motor vehicle crashes in 1994 was 150.5 billion dollars. This represents the present value of lifetime costs for 40,676 fatalities, 5.2 million nonfatal injuries, and 27 million damaged vehicles, in both police reported and unreported crashes. Property damage costs of 52.1 billion dollars accounted for the largest share of costs, while lost market productivity accounted for 42.4 billion dollars. Medical expenses totalled 17 billion dollars. Each fatality resulted in an average discounted lifetime cost of 830,000 dollars. Alcohol-involved crashes caused 45 billion dollars or 30% of all economic costs, and 78% of these costs occurred in crashes where a driver or pedestrian was legally intoxicated (>=.10% BAC). Crashes in which police indicate that at least one driver was exceeding the legal speed limit or driving too fast for conditions cost 27.7 billion dollars in 1994. Public revenues paid for 24% of medical costs, and 9% of all costs resulting from motor vehicle crashes. These crashes cost taxpayers 13.8 billion dollars in 1994, the equivalent of 144 dollars in added taxes for each household in the United States.
