Memoirs Read Before the Anthropological Society of London, 1863-4, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by Anthropological Society Of London Pdf

Excerpt from Memoirs Read Before the Anthropological Society of London, 1863-4, Vol. 1 I. - 0n the Negro's Place in Nature.* By james hunt, ph.d., Foreign Associate of the Anthropological Society of Paris, Honorary Fellow of the Ethnological Society of London, Corresponding Member of the Upper Hesse Society for Natural and Medical Science, etc., etc., and President of the Anthropological Society of London. I propose in this communication to discuss the physical and mental characters of the Negro, With a view of determining not only his position in animated nature, but also the station to be assigned to him in the genus homo. I Shall necessarily have to go over a wide field, and cannot hope to treat the subject in an exhaustive manner. I Shall be amply satisfied if I succeed in directing the attention of my scientific friends to a study of this most important and hitherto nearly neglected branch of the great science of Anthropology. Journal of the Ethnological Society of London, 1854, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by Ethnological Society of London Pdf

Excerpt from Journal of the Ethnological Society of London, 1854, Vol. 3 To the south Damaraland is hilly: the northern part con sists of wide plains covered with thorn-bushes, low shrubs, and grass. All the rivers are periodical: on their banks grow high and thick trees, chiefly of the acacia kind. Compared with Namaqualand the country is well watered. Besides mineral springs, wells are frequently found which are dug by the natives, so that the want of water is not felt in travelling. Classic Anthropology by John William Bennett Pdf

Classic Anthropology is Bennett's label for the work produced by anthropologists during the period 1915-1955, which many believe represents the most productive era in the discipline's history. It is also one that can never be repeated, given the fact that most of anthropology's basic data - the ideas and customs of tribal peoples - have been extinguished or greatly transformed by modernization and nationalization. The book is composed of some fifteen essays. Among the issues examined are: the emergence of a functionalist viewpoint in ethnology; the difficulties of developing a theory of human behavior because of the focus on culture; the "search" for concepts of culture to serve specialized needs; the neglect of social psychology by the "culture and personality" field; how value judgments emerged, willy-nilly - or conversely, were neglected, in ethnological research; how applied anthropology was challenged by "Action Anthropology"; and how the interdisciplinary anthropology of the late 1940s was submerged in the postwar effort to return the discipline to traditionalroots. Individual anthropologists whose work is examined include, among others. Bronislaw Malinowski, Leslie Spier, Alfred Kroeber, Ralph Linton, Margaret Mead, Ruth Benedict, Clyde Kluckhohn, Gregory Bateson, and Walter Taylor.

The Jews and Modern Capitalism by Werner Sombart Pdf

Since its first appearance in Germany in 1911, Jews and Modern Capitalism has provoked vehement criticism. As Samuel Z. Klausner emphasizes, the lasting value of Sombart's work rests not in his results-most of which have long since been disproved-but in his point of departure. Openly acknowledging his debt to Max Weber, Sombart set out to prove the double thesis of the Jewish foundation of capitalism and the capitalist foundation of Judaism. Klausner, placing Sombart's work in its historical and societal context, examines the weaknesses and strengths of Jews and Modern Capitalism.
