Transport and Energy Conversion in the Heliosphere by J.-P. Rozelot,L. Klein,J.-C. Vial Pdf

The book contains courses taught to a public of Ph.D. students, post-docs and confirmed researchers in all fields of heliospheric plasma physics. It aims at identifying physical issues which are common to two different fields of astronomy: solar and magnetospheric physics. Emphasis is given to basic processes of transport and conversion of energy: magnetic reconnection is discussed in detail from the viewpoints of MHD and kinetic physics. Processes of charged particle acceleration are reviewed and compared with recent observations. The subject is introduced by a summary of MHD, and the basic structures and parameters of the solar atmosphere, terrestrial ionosphere and magnetosphere are reviewed. The book combines a pedagogic and comprehensive presentation of physical issues and raises fully open questions, with the complementary and sometimes conflicting views of geophysicists and solar physicists. The book's focus, while basic, opens new avenues.

Thermodynamics of Energy Conversion and Transport by Stanislaw Sieniutycz,Alexis De Vos Pdf

Scientists and engineers are nowadays faced with the problem of optimizing complex systems subject to constraints from, ecology, economics, and thermodynamics. It is chiefly to the last of these that this volume is addressed. Intended for physicists, chemists, and engineers, the book uses examples from solar, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and environmental engineering to focus on the use of thermodynamic criteria for optimizing energy conversion and transmission. The early chapters centre on solar energy conversion, the second section discusses the transfer and conversion of chemical energy, while the concluding chapters deal with geometric methods in thermodynamics.

Particle Acceleration and Transport in the Heliosphere and Beyond by Gang Li Pdf

All papers have been peer-reviewed. Our star is a very effective particle accelerator. Energies up to GeVs have been observed in Solar energetic particle events. These events are often associated with solar flares and/or Coronal Mass Ejections. Understanding how particles are accelerated in these phenomena has been an outstanding problem in space plasma physics for a long time. Part of the reason is its practical (e.g. Space weather) and fundamental (cosmic ray origin) importance. In this conference we review recent progresses on this problem, with a balance between observations, theories and numerical simulations. Specific topics include 1) particle acceleration at flare site, 2) turbulence properties of the solar wind, 3) particle acceleration and transport in the inner heliosphere, 4) particle acceleration at the termination shock and heliosheath, and 5) particle acceleration at supernova remnant shocks.

Energy Conversion and Particle Acceleration in the Solar Corona by Karl-Ludwig Klein Pdf

The conversion of energy generated in the Sun's interior creates its hot corona and a wealth of dynamical phenomena such as flares and mass ejections. Based on recent significant progress in understanding magnetic reconnection and a wealth of new observations of energetic particle signatures from the sun, the present volume reviews the current theoretical and experimental status in the field. Paying attention to both the details and the broader picture, this book addresses both the experienced researcher as well as non-specialist researchers from related areas and postgraduate students.

Energy Conversion by D. Yogi Goswami,Frank Kreith Pdf

This handbook surveys the range of methods and fuel types used in generating energy for industry, transportation, and heating and cooling of buildings. Solar, wind, biomass, nuclear, geothermal, ocean and fossil fuels are discussed and compared, and the thermodynamics of energy conversion is explained. Appendices are provided with fully updated data. Thoroughly revised, this second edition surveys the latest advances in energy conversion from a wide variety of currently available energy sources. It describes energy sources such as fossil fuels, biomass (including refuse-derived biomass fuels), nuclear, solar radiation, wind, geothermal, and ocean, then provides the terminology and units used for each energy resource and their equivalence. It includes an overview of the steam power cycles, gas turbines, internal combustion engines, hydraulic turbines, Stirling engines, advanced fossil fuel power systems, and combined-cycle power plants. It outlines the development, current use, and future of nuclear power.
