There is much that is remarkable about this volume. Its roots date back to an international conference on Shakespeare and kabuki with the theme ‘Traditions of Cross-dressing and Cross-gender Casting’, held near Kobe, Japan, in August 1995. In January of that year Kobe had suffered a major earthquake resulting in significant loss of life and great damage to the infrastructure. At last, it is now possible to publish most of the papers that were presented at the Kobe conference (together with some additional contributions), which have been edited, and where necessary, revised for publication; and though so long delayed, the essays continue to represent key areas of research by some of the world’s most distinguished scholars in their fields. The topics addressed include feminism, transvestism, cross-dressing, cross-gender casting, Elizabethan boy actors and kabuki onnagata. Importantly, the volume also contains a full transcription of the Open Forum session which concluded the conference, providing the reader with a quality debate on the main issues. Impersonations: The Artifice of Brahmin Masculinity in South Indian Dance centers on an insular community of Smarta Brahmin men from the Kuchipudi village in Telugu-speaking South India who are required to don stri-vesam (woman’s guise) and impersonate female characters from Hindu religious narratives. Impersonation is not simply a gender performance circumscribed to the Kuchipudi stage, but a practice of power that enables the construction of hegemonic Brahmin masculinity in everyday village life. However, the power of the Brahmin male body in stri-vesam is highly contingent, particularly on account of the expansion of Kuchipudi in the latter half of the twentieth century from a localized village performance to a transnational Indian dance form. This book analyzes the practice of impersonation across a series of boundaries—village to urban, Brahmin to non-Brahmin, hegemonic to non-normative—to explore the artifice of Brahmin masculinity in contemporary South Indian dance.

In this striking contribution to trans history, Colby Gordon challenges the prevailing assumption that trans life is a byproduct of recent medical innovation by locating a cultural imaginary of transition in the religious writing of the English Renaissance. Marking a major intervention in early modern gender studies, Glorious Bodies insists that transition happened, both socially and surgically, hundreds of years before the nineteenth-century advent of sexology. Pairing literary texts by Shakespeare, Webster, Donne, and Milton with a broad range of primary sources, Gordon examines the religious tropes available to early modern subjects for imagining how gender could change. From George Herbert’s invaginated Jesus and Milton’s gestational Adam to the ungendered “glorious body” of the resurrection, early modern theology offers a rich conceptual reservoir of trans imagery. In uncovering early modern trans theology, Glorious Bodies mounts a critique of the broad consensus that secularism is a necessary precondition for trans life, while also combating contemporary transphobia and the right-wing Christian culture war seeking to criminalize transition.
