European Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing in the 21st Century by José Carlos Santos,John R. Cutcliffe Pdf

This groundbreaking first volume of the Series has a number of features that set it apart from other books on this subject: Firstly, it focuses on interpersonal, humanistic and ecological views and approaches to P/MH nursing. Secondly, it highlights patient/client-centered approaches and mental-health-service user involvement. Lastly, it is a genuinely European P/MH nursing textbook – the first of its kind – largely written by mental health scholars from Europe, although it also includes contributions from North America and Australia/New Zealand. Focusing on clinical/practical issues, theory and empirical findings, it adopts an evidence-based or evidence-informed approach. Each contribution presents the state-of-the-art of P/MH nursing in Europe so that it can be transferred to and implemented by P/MH nurses and the broader mental health care community around the globe. As such, it will be the first genuinely 21st century European Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing book.

Choice, Behavioral Economics, and Addiction by Rudolph Eugene Vuchinich,Nick Heather Pdf

Choice, Behavioural Economics and Addiction is about the theory, data, and applied implications of choice-based models of substance use and addiction. The distinction between substance use and addiction is important, because many individuals use substances but are not also addicted to them. The behavioural economic perspective has made contributions to the analysis of both of these phenomena and, while the major focus of the book is on theories of addiction, it is necessary also to consider the behavioural economic account of substance use in order to place the theories in their proper context and provide full coverage of the contribution of behavioural economics to this field of study. The book discusses the four major theories of addiction that have been developed in the area of economic science/behavioural economics. They are: . hyperbolic discounting . melioration . relative addiction . rational addiction The main objective of the book is to popularise these ideas among addiction researchers, academics and practitioners. The specific aims are to articulate the shared and distinctive elements of these four theories, to present and discuss the latest empirical work on substance abuse and addiction that is being conducted in this area, and to articulate a range of applied implications of this body of work for clinical, public health and public policy initiatives. The book is based on an invitation-only conference entitled, Choice, Behavioural Economics and Addiction: Theory, Evidence and Applications held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, March 30 - April 1, 2001. The conference was attended by prominent scientists and scholars, representing a range of disciplines concerned with theories of addiction and their consequences for policy and practice. The papers in the book are based on the papers given at the above conference, together with commentaries by distinguished experts and, in many cases, replies to these comments by the presenters.

Addiction Is a Choice by Jeffrey A. Schaler Pdf

Politicians and the media tell us that people who take drugs, including alcohol or nicotine, cannot help themselves. They are supposedly victims of the disease of 'addiciton', and they need 'treatment'. The same goes for sex addicts, shopping addicts, food addicts, gambling addicts, or even addicts to abusive relationships. This theory, which grew out of the Temperance movement and was developed and disseminated by the religious cult known as Alcoholics Anonymous, has not been confirmed by any factual research. Numerous scientific studies show that 'addicts' are in control of their behavior. Contrary to the shrill, mindless propaganda of the 'war on drugs', very few of the people who use alcohol, marijuana, heroin, or cocaine will ever become 'addicted', and of those who do become heavy drug users, most will matrue out of it in time, without treatment. Research indicates that 'treatment' is completely ineffective, an absolute waste of time and money. Instead of looking at drub addiction as a disease, Dr. Schaler proposes that we view it as willful commitment or dedication, akin to joining a religion or pursuing a romantic involvement. While heavy consumption of drugs is often foolish and self-destructive, it is a matter of personal choice.

Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon and Andes by Richard Spruce Pdf

Having previously embarked on a collecting expedition to the Pyrenees, backed by Sir William Hooker and George Bentham, the botanist Richard Spruce (1817-93) travelled in 1849 to South America, where he carried out unprecedented exploration among the diverse flora across the northern part of the continent. After his death, Spruce's writings on fifteen fruitful years of discovery were edited as a labour of love by fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), whom Spruce had met in Santarém. This two-volume work, first published in 1908, includes many of the author's exquisite illustrations. Showing the determination to reach plants in almost inaccessible areas, Spruce collected hundreds of species, many with medicinal properties, notably the quinine-yielding cinchona tree, as well as the datura and coca plants. Featuring four maps, Volume 2 includes discussion of the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andes and the cinchona forests of western Chimborazo.

Attachment and Interaction by Mario Marrone,Nicola Diamond Pdf

Attachment and Interaction traces the early roots of attachment theory and the work of its creator, John Bowlby, presenting recent theoretical developments and their clinical applications in an accessible style. Bringing new and original ideas to the main theoretical points, the author explores such questions as how attachment theory can guide a critical exploration of how therapists work with their patients, and what the practical implications are of using such an approach. The book is divided into four parts. In the first, Marrone relates basic concepts from John Bowlby's seminal work to recent developments in attachment theory and research. The second part is an exploration of the relationship between attachment theory and contemporary psychoanalytic ideas, and part three discusses the clinical application of attachment theory to individual and group analysis, including a critique of iatrogenic interventions. In the fourth part Nicola Diamond looks at the way John Bowlby's position conflicted with the psychoanalytic orthodoxy of his time. She further examines controversial issues raised by Bowlby's work, suggesting that in order to appreciate fully his contribution a rethinking of philosophical premises is required.'There is a beautiful mix in this book, which integrates John Bowlby the individual and the professional. A mix that at times makes Bowlby burst from the pages and almost touch the reader. There was a goodness, humility, drive and sadness about John Bowlby, qualities that Marrone has expertly enlivened in the text. The book's target audience is certainly geared towards psychotherapists yet it remains accessible for the lay person or student to read. It is an absolute must if one wishes to know anything about John Bowlby.'- Psych-Talk, Newsletter for the Student Members Group of the British Psychological Society'Here is the story of how Dr John Bowlby really thought and practised. Mairo Marrone's anecdotes of the warmth and kindness he encountered as Bowlby's supervisee show a more personal view than other accounts. The book is immediately accessible helped along by a structure reminiscent of good history-taking. The reader is guided through the developments of Attachment Theory against the theoretical and political background of the Psychoanalytical Society of his day: the warring factions and frictions, mirroring the 1939-45 hostilities ... Many examples and anecdotes supplement the biographical and theoretical detail. There are visits to the teaching of Kohut, Lacan, Ezriel, Stern and many others. Disagreements are documented and explained. Mario Marrone has helpfully summarized the research and development in the years since Bowlby, which support the original theoretical structure, and has shared generously from his own clinical findings.'- Group Analysis'Mario Marrone clearly achieves more than his aim of providing the reader with a coherent reference framework. He has written an interesting, comprehensive and easy-to-read book. Attachment and Interaction is relevant and valuable reading for not only individual and group psychotherapists but for those working in statuary child care, adult and child psychiatry, family therapy and any profession where an understanding of inter/intra-personal relationships is essential. Throughout the book both Marrone and Nicola Diamond bring a new and exciting socio-cultural and political perspective to attachment theory which highlights its relevance in modern day contemporary society.'- International Journal of Psychotherapy
