Writing Travel in Central Asian History by Nile Green Pdf

For centuries, travelers have made Central Asia known to the wider world through their writings. In this volume, scholars employ these little-known texts in a wide range of Asian and European languages to trace how Central Asia was gradually absorbed into global affairs. The representations of the region brought home to China and Japan, India and Persia, Russia and Great Britain, provide valuable evidence that helps map earlier periods of globalization and cultural interaction.

A Ride to Khiva: Travels and Adventures in Central Asia by Frederick Burnaby Pdf

It is 1875, the time of the 'Great Game', when the British and Russian Empires are vying for power in central Asia. Great Britain learns of Russia's plans to annex India, the 'jewel in the crown' of the Empire. A British officer rides for Khiva, a Russian city closed to European travelers. He is on a dangerous mission, to learn if this remote and dangerous oasis is about to be used as a springboard for the Russian invasion of India. Captain Frederick Burnaby ballooned across the English Channel, traveled in Spain and Russia, and was wounded, and eventually killed, fighting for Britain's empire. This account of his perilous journey to Khiva, published in 1876 and immediately reprinted, brought him instant fame.

Central Asia by Bayard Taylor Pdf

Excerpt from Central Asia: Travels in Cashmere, Little Thibet and Central Asia The name "Central Asia" correctly describes, in a geographical sense, the heart of that continent. It is separated from the river-system of the Aral and Caspian Seas, on the west, by almost impassable mountain-ranges; from the affluents of the Indus and Ganges, on the south, by the chain of the Küen-lün, the rival of the Himalayas, and from the rivers of China to the eastward, by the great Desert of Gobi. A line drawn from Constantinople to Peking, and another from the latitude of Cape Comorin to that of the Polar Sea, bisecting the former line, would very nearly indicate the central portion of the region, as also of the continent. Here - partly, perhaps, on account of its remote and nearly inaccessible situation, and also partly from concurrent traditions - many ethnologists have placed the original cradle of the Aryan race.
