?I joined Nadwat al-_Ulam__ and felt as if I had been raised from the dusty ground to the stars up above, from the level earth to the high heavens. I came across ancient books and studied with great teachers who were knowledgeable scholars, learned scribes and pious worshippers. . . ." This is how Mo_ammad Akram Nadw_ fondly recalls his alma matter in the heart of Lucknow. Lessons Learned is a celebration of his journey of discovery, by sharing the biographies of some of his senior teachers along with lessons and insights learned along the way. The book is arranged topically as a critical survey of the Islamic sciences, and he selects one key teacher from each discipline he has chosen to highlight, giving us glimpses into their lives, personalities, habits and more. Some of these teachers are still alive, and many long gone but certainly not forgotten. All of this provides a poignant snapshot of life and scholarship at Nadwah and the Muslim literary and intellectual world of the Indian subcontinent.
Madīnan Society at the Time of the Prophet: Its characteristics and organization by Akram Ḍiyāʼ ʻUmarī Pdf
As its title clearly implies, "Madinan Society at the Time of the Prophet" (SAAS) is a work that brings out the most important aspects of life in the early Muslim community. Its author, the renowned scholar of sirah and Sunnah studies Professor Akram Diya' al'Umari, has expended a great deal of effort in order to make this book more than just a recitation of the historical record. The result is a breakthrough in historiographical methodology, as Dr. al'Umari has effectively succeeded in combining the strict methodological guidelines used by traditional Muslim scholars of the Sunnah and usul al hadith with modern methods of historical criticism. Volume One of this important new work, subtitled "Its Characteristics and Organization", aims at presenting the reader with an accurate description of the society brought about through the efforts of the Prophet (SAAS) and his Companions, the society viewed by every successive generation of Muslims as the ideal in temporal spiritual values.Volume Two of this important new work, subtitled "The Jihad Against the Mushrikun", deals with the all-important subject of the relations of the struggling new community with the forces that threatened its very existence. Without a doubt, the exemplary behavior of the Prophet (SAAS) and his Companions during the long years that they remained under attack has remained a continued source of inspiration for all Muslims. Its contemporary relevance and significance to the Ummah is a matter that needs no explanation.
Dr. M. B. Goldstein was encouraged at a young age to question the beliefs of his people. Free to discover God in his own way, Goldstein passionately searched for God through history, science, and mental and spiritual analysis. Now, in his comprehensive study of the psychological analysis of faith, Goldstein shares insight and knowledge he gained in his unique spiritual journey, seeking to help anyone who wishes to learn more about the history and philosophy of religious belief. Dr. Goldstein, a retired psychiatrist and professor of psychiatry, relies on twenty years of extensive research—including the study of more than five hundred of the most important works of religion, history, and philosophy—to offer a step-by-step investigation of the important contributions to the major religions and philosophies of belief. As Goldstein traces six thousand years of history through to modern humanity, he highlights the differing views existing among religious and scientific communities regarding the creation of the universe, the human involvement with faith, and the ways God beliefs have evolved over time. The Newest Testament provides an introspective look at religion and beliefs by exploring and attempting to bridge a divide through understanding, facts, and intelligent faith.
Revised Second EditionThe book before you (noble reader) is a detailed explanation of the famous hadith of Jibril, at the end of which, the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "This was Jibril, he came to you in order to teach you your Religion." Due to the many benefits contained within this book, the Muhaddith of al-Madinah, Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad (may Allah preserve him) decided to write a book dedicated solely to the treasures found in this hadith. The Scholars of the past have mentioned the comprehensive nature of this hadith in various places:So al-Qadi Iyad (d.544H) said: "Indeed, this hadith comprises an explanation of al the acts of worship, the outward ones and the inward ones, from the tenets of Iman, the actions of the limbs and the sincerity of the souls and it cautions against the harmful actions; to the extent that all of the Shariah sciences refer back to it and branch out from it."And al-Qurtubi (d.671H) said: "This hadith deserves to be called Ummus-Sunnah (mother of the Sunnah), due to what it contains from comprehensive knowledge of the Sunnah."
The Book of the Jihad of 'Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106) by Niall Christie Pdf
In 1105, six years after the first crusaders from Europe conquered Jerusalem, a Damascene Muslim jurisprudent named ’Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106) publicly dictated an extended call to the military jihad (holy war) against the European invaders. Entitled Kitab al-Jihad (The Book of the Jihad), al-Sulami’s work both summoned his Muslim brethren to the jihad and instructed them in the manner in which it ought to be conducted, covering topics as diverse as who should fight and be fought, treatment of prisoners and plunder, and the need for participants to fight their own inner sinfulness before turning their efforts against the enemy. Al-Sulami’s text is vital for a complete understanding of the Muslim reaction to the crusades, providing the reader with the first contemporary record of Muslim preaching against the crusaders. However, until recently only a small part of the text has been studied by modern scholars, as it has remained for the most part an unedited manuscript. In this book Niall Christie provides a complete edition and the first full English translation of the extant sections (parts 2, 8, 9 and 12) of the manuscript of al-Sulami’s work, making it fully available to modern readers for the first time. These are accompanied by an introductory study exploring the techniques that the author uses to motivate his audience, the precedents that influenced his work, and possible directions for future study of the text. In addition, an appendix provides translations of jihad sermons by Ibn Nubata al-Fariqi (d. 985), a preacher from Asia Minor whose rhetorical style was highly influential in the development of al-Sulami’s work.
