Tribute to Tagore by Yasmin Faruque Pdf

Rabindranath Tagore is the life force of Bangla literature. His contributions to the cultural life of West Bengal and Bangladesh are beyond measure. In fact, there is no area of Bangla literature that he did not touch. He composed more than 1,000 songs, including the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh; numerous dances such as Shyama, Chandalika; plays such as Raja, Raktakaravi; 200-plus short stories like Drishtidaan, Kabuliwala; many essays and letters; and last but not least, a dozen witty, pithy, and insightful novels, such as Naukadubi, Bou Thakuranir Haat, in addition to numerous volumes of poetry exploring a number of issues. I pay my tribute to Tagore with translations of some of his beautiful stories. I hope my tiny effort pleases my readers, and that they forgive any mistakes that I may have made inadvertently.

Tagore beyond Borders by Mihaela Gligor,Elisabetta Marino Pdf

This book looks at Rabindranath Tagore’s creative art, social commitment, literary and artistic representation and his unique legacy in the cultural history of modern India – as a blend of the quintessentially Indian and the liberal universalist. Tagore’s genius, which he expressed through his poetry, songs, paintings, drama and philosophy, is celebrated across the globe. In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his volume of poetry, Gitanjali (Song Offerings), making him the first Nobel laureate from Asia. This volume of essays celebrates his intellectual engagements and his incredible legacy by discussing the diverse ways in which his works have been reinterpreted, adapted and translated over the years. It analyses his perspectives on modernity, nationalism, liberation, education, post-colonialism and translatability and their relevance today. The leitmotif is a Tagore who, while imaginable as made possible only within the Indian tradition, eludes attempts aimed at identification with a national culture and remains a "cosmopolitan" in the best sense of the term. This volume will be of interest to readers and researchers in the fields of literature, philosophy, political science, cultural studies, Asian studies, South Asian studies and Tagore studies. Fans of Tagore will also find this an interesting read as it presents many little knows aspects of the poet’s work.

Rabindranath Tagore by Reba Som Pdf

Gitanjali, the book of poems for which Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, was in fact a collection of songs. Much of what Tagore experienced-joy and frustration, grief and devastation-was expressed through music, and during his lifetime, Tagore was most renowned for his songwriting. The distinction of his musical oeuvre lay in the near-perfect balance he achieved between the evocative lyrics, the matching melody and the rhythmic structure in which each song was bound. The Singer and His Song is a unique biography of Tagore with music as its leitmotif. It traces the musical journey of the poet with anecdotes and allusions, and includes translations of some of his most resonant songs. Written in elegant prose and accompanied by relevant photographs and paintings, this highly original book is a fitting tribute to Tagore's enduring musical legacy.

Creativity in Indian Dance by Sulakshana Sen Pdf

Heralded as the father of Indian Creative Dance, and India’s cultural ambassador, Uday Shankar (1900–1977) was a dancer and choreographer who created a vibrant new Indian dance form without any ethno-regional centricity. Over time, Shankar’s art evolved from being a representation of the exotic East, to a narrative of modern India. This book provides a detailed study of Shankar’s works in his autumn years (1960–1977), which remain largely un-documented. It discusses the form and content of Shankar’s style, and its basic tenets - something hitherto unexplored. It also analyses Rabindranath Tagore and Uday Shankar as path-breakers of the duality in Indian performing arts traditions. The productions explored in detail are Samanya Kshati (1961), Shankar’s tour of USA, Canada and Europe in 1962, and India’s cultural diplomacy, as well as Prakriti Ananda (1966), Shankar’s last tour of USA (1968), his last masterpiece, Shankarscope (1970, 1971 and 1972), together with Shankar's legacy. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of dance history, art history, critical theory, artists' biographies, creative arts studies, theatre and Asian performing arts studies as well as students of International Relations theory – primarily those interested in cultural diplomacy and soft power.

‘Greater India’ and the Indian Expansionist Imagination, c. 1885–1965 by Jolita Zabarskaitė Pdf

This book is the first systematic study of the genealogy, discursive structures, and political implications of the concept of ‘Greater India’, implying a Hindu colonization of Southeast Asia, and used by extension to argue for a past Indian greatness as a colonial power, reproducible in the present and future. From the 1880s to the 1960s, protagonists of the Greater India theme attempted to make a case for the importance of an expansionist Indian civilisation in civilizing Southeast Asia. The argument was extended to include Central Asia, Africa, North and South America, and other regions where Indian migrants were to be found. The advocates of this Indocentric and Hindu revivalist approach, with Hindu and Indian often taken to be synonymous, were involved in a quintessentially parochial project, despite its apparently international dimensions: to justify an Indian expansionist imagination that viewed India’s past as a colonizer and civilizer of other lands as a model for the restoration of that past greatness in the future. Zabarskaite shows that the crucial ideologues and elements used for the formation of the construct of Greater India can be traced to the svadeśī movement of the turn of the century, and that Greater India moved easily between the domains of the scholarly and the popular as it sought to establish itself as a form of nationalist self-assertion.
