Tristram the Jester (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Hardt Pdf

Excerpt from Tristram the Jester Through "Tantris der Narr" Ernst Hardt has won for himself a place in the front rank of contemporaneous German dramatists and poets. The play has been produced with great success on many of the National German stages, and has also been awarded the Kaiser Preis and, what is a still greater acknowledgment of its merit, the Volks-Schiller Preis. This latter is a prize bestowed once every three years on the best play produced during that period, by a committee which acts subject to the Emperor's approval. Although as a drama it is not well adapted to the American stage, yet the great beauty and the compelling power with which Herr Hardt has handled the familiar theme of the Tristram and Iseult legend, but along a new line, can hardly fail of recognition. For this reason I have attempted to render this brilliant drama into English. For my short-comings I can only plead the almost insurmountable difficulty connected with any verse translation, and my inexperience. I, therefore, beg that this, my first attempt, be received leniently by those into whose hands the book may fall. The Court Jester (Classic Reprint) by Cornelia Baker Pdf

Excerpt from The Court Jester You may think, and with reason, that turning handsprings was not a respectful thing to do when a lady, and above all a duchess, was talking. But Le Glorieux was the court jester, the fool, who when Charles the Bold, son Of the duchess, was living, was wont to make his master laugh. There fore his conduct and conversation as a rule were not what one could expect Of a sedate and dignified member Of society. Kuno Francke's Edition of the German Classics (1913-15) by Jeffrey L. Sammons Pdf

The twenty-volume edition of The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature Translated into English was edited by Kuno Francke of Harvard (1855-1930), the most prestigious professor of German in America at the time. While it bears the imprint dates 1913 and 1914, it was not completed until mid-1915, just in time for the submarine sinking of the passenger liner Lusitania in May of that year. The edition was publicized with great fanfare and was well received at first, but with the outbreak of the European war in 1914 and the entry of the United States into it in 1917, American sentiment turned against all things German. The reviews became hostile; the edition was nearly pulped; its publisher went bankrupt; and Francke felt obliged to resign his Harvard professorship. Kuno Francke's Edition of The German Classics (1913-15) describes the origins of the edition; recounts the careers of the editors and some fifty professional contributors; seeks to identify approximately 115 translators; and comments on the nearly 500 illustrations, mostly German art of the nineteenth century. This book also introduces the selections from the 114 featured authors, almost a third of whom were still alive at the time of publication, and evaluates the critical commentary. The edition emerges from the study as a laboratory of the high prestige of German literature and culture in the United States before it fell into permanent decline at the time of World War I.

The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature: Volume 2, 1660-1800 by George Watson Pdf

More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
