The Trojan War by Bernard Evslin Pdf

A cinematic tale of passion, war, loyalty, betrayal, and retribution “These events I relate are the living seeds, and they will bear bloody fruit, I promise.” So says Ulysses, King of Ithaca, as he recounts the origins of the Trojan War. Renowned Greek mythologist Bernard Evslin masterfully depicts the ten-year war: its beginnings rooted in discord among the gods; the seduction of the famed beauty Helen of Troy; and the spectacular development of the Trojan Horse, Ulysses’ cunning ploy to win the war. Evslin brings to life the dramatic twists and turns of this classic tale of human folly, mortal heroism, and the brutality and brilliance that have come down through the ages.

The Amazons by C. Mitchell Pdf

"War is the domain of heroes, they say. Their lives are mortal, but their actions immortal. When the world will change utterly after we are gone, will people understand why we fought? And why we died? And what shall the world then call us? Warriors? Or barbarians? Or monsters?" It's 1193 B.C. and the greatest war in all of ancient times is still under way, the Trojan War. When Prince Hector and his father, King Priam of Troy, call other civilizations to come to their aid to fight against the Greeks, Penthesileia and her army of Amazons arrive on Troy's shores and lead the defense against the Greek ranks. When first called to his aid, Penthesileia has just returned home from fighting a massive battle, is hoping to recover from a personal loss, is looking forward to getting married, therefore when the Trojan War calls to them, she goes under obligation, and sails into greatness. Gaining many victories, Penthesileia gains the respect of the whole Trojan army, and then eventually faces the ultimate confrontation: facing Achilles in battle, a man who is rumored to be the greatest warrior to have ever lived. Thus comes forward the story of the woman who led her army off the battlefield, into legend, and then into immortality.

The Trojan War by Barry Strauss Pdf

The Trojan War is the most famous conflict in history, the subject of Homer's Iliad, one of the cornerstones of Western literature. Although many readers know that this literary masterwork is based on actual events, there is disagreement about how much of Homer's tale is true. Drawing on recent archeological research, historian and classicist Barry Strauss explains what really happened in Troy more than 3,000 years ago. For many years it was thought that Troy was an insignificant place that never had a chance against the Greek warriors who laid siege and overwhelmed the city. In the old view, the conflict was decided by duels between champions on the plain of Troy. Today we know that Troy was indeed a large and prosperous city, just as Homer said. The Trojans themselves were not Greeks but vassals of the powerful Hittite Empire to the east in modern-day Turkey, and they probably spoke a Hittite-related language called Luwian. The Trojan War was most likely the culmination of a long feud over power, wealth, and honor in western Turkey and the offshore islands. The war itself was mainly a low-intensity conflict, a series of raids on neighboring towns and lands. It seems unlikely that there was ever a siege of Troy; rather some sort of trick -- perhaps involving a wooden horse -- allowed the Greeks to take the city. Strauss shows us where Homer nods, and sometimes exaggerates and distorts, as well. He puts the Trojan War into the context of its time, explaining the strategies and tactics that both sides used, and compares the war to contemporary battles elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. With his vivid reconstructions of the conflict and his insights into the famous characters and events of Homer's great epic, Strauss masterfully tells the story of the fall of Troy as history without losing the poetry and grandeur that continue to draw readers to this ancient tale.
