George Alfred Henty (8 December 1832 - 16 November 1902) was a prolific English novelist and war correspondent.He is best known for his historical adventure stories that were popular in the late 19th century. His works include The Dragon & The Raven (1886), For The Temple (1888), Under Drake's Flag (1883) and In Freedom's Cause (1885).G. A. Henty was born in Trumpington, near Cambridge. He was a sickly child who had to spend long periods in bed. During his frequent illnesses he became an avid reader and developed a wide range of interests which he carried into adulthood. He attended Westminster School, London, and later Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was a keen sportsman. He left the university early without completing his degree to volunteer for the Army Hospital Commissariat when the Crimean War began. He was sent to the Crimea and while there he witnessed the appalling conditions under which the British soldier had to fight. His letters home were filled with vivid descriptions of what he saw. His father was impressed by his letters and sent them to The Morning Advertiser newspaper which printed them. This initial writing success was a factor in Henty's later decision to accept the offer to become a special correspondent, the early name for journalists now better known as war correspondents. Shortly before resigning from the army as a captain in 1859 he married Elizabeth Finucane. The couple had four children. Elizabeth died in 1865 after a long illness and shortly after her death Henty began writing articles for the Standard newspaper. In 1866 the newspaper sent him as their special correspondent to report on the Austro-Italian War where he met Giuseppe Garibaldi. He went on to cover the 1868 British punitive expedition to Abyssinia, the Franco-Prussian War, the Ashanti War, the Carlist Rebellion in Spain and the Turco-Serbian War.He also witnessed the opening of the Suez Canal and travelled to Palestine, Russia and India. Henty was a strong supporter of the British Empire all his life; according to literary critic Kathryn Castle: "Henty...exemplified the ethos of the new imperialism, and glorified in its successes." Henty's ideas about politics were influenced by writers such as Sir Charles Dilke and Thomas Carlyle.Henty once related in an interview how his storytelling skills grew out of tales told after dinner to his children. He wrote his first children's book, Out on the Pampas in 1868, naming the book's main characters after his children. The book was published by Griffith and Farran in November 1870 with a title page date of 1871. While most of the 122 books he wrote were for children, he also wrote adult novels, non-fiction such as The March to Magdala and Those Other Animals, short stories for the likes of The Boy's Own Paper and edited the Union Jack, a weekly boy's magazine. His children's novels typically revolved around a boy or young man living in troubled times. These ranged from the Punic War to more recent conflicts such as the Napoleonic Wars or the American Civil War. Henty's heroes - which occasionally included young ladies - are uniformly intelligent, courageous, honest and resourceful with plenty of 'pluck' yet are also modest.These virtues have made Henty's novels popular today among many Christians and homeschoolers.Henty usually researched his novels by ordering several books on the subject he was writing on from libraries, and consulting them before beginning writing.Some of his books were written about events (such as the Crimean War) that he witnessed himself.....

My husband, being of English birth and having served in the king's army, cannot brook what he calls the rebellious talk which is common among his neighbors, and is already on bad terms with many around us. I myself am, as it were, a neutral. As an American woman, it seems to me that the colonists have been dealt with somewhat hardly by the English Parliament, and that the measures of the latter have been high-handed and arbitrary. Upon the other hand, I naturally incline toward my husband's views. He maintains that, as the king's army has driven out the French, and gives protection to the colony, it is only fair that the colonists should contribute to its expenses. The English ask for no contributions toward the expense of their own country, but demand that, at least, the expenses of the protection of the colony shall not be charged upon the heavily taxed people at home. As to the law that the colony shall trade only with the mother country, my husband says that this is the rule in the colonies of Spain, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands, and that the people here, who can obtain what land they choose and till it without rent, should not grumble at paying this small tax to the mother country. However it be, I fear that troubles will come, and, this place being the head and focus of the party hostile to England, my husband, feeling himself out of accord with all his neighbors, saving a few loyal gentlemen like himself, is thinking much and seriously of selling our estate here and of moving away into the new countries of the West, where he will be free from all the disputation and contentious talk which occupies men's time here."Indeed, cousin, times have sadly changed since you were staying here with us five years ago. Then our life was a peaceful and quiet one; now there is nothing but wrangling and strife. The dissenting clergy are, as my husband says was the case in England before the great civil war, the fomenters of this discontent. George Alfred Henty was born on 8 December, 1832, at Trumpington, near Cambridge, the second son of the four children of coal mine manager James Henty (1799-1872) and Mary Bovill (1808-1887). Whilst attending the Westminster School he took to physical pursuits such as rowing and boxing, activities he would continue at Caius College, Cambridge, where he studied the classics. Later in life yachting became one his many passions. At the outbreak of the Crimean War Henty and his brother Frederick were commissioned for service and the Morning Advertiser published his letters home. Frederick died after contracting cholera, and Henty was invalided home. Upon arrival home he continued his writing whilst rehabilitating. The now-promoted captain and Elizabeth Finucane (1836-1865) married on 1 July, 1857, with whom he'd have four children. In 1865 Elizabeth died of tuberculosis. His two daughters Maud Elizabeth (d.1879) at the age of eighteen, and Ethel Mary (d.1882) at the age of nineteen, also died of tuberculosis. Overcome with grief that lasted for many years, Henty resigned his position as captain because it wasn't sufficient to support his family. He then launched into his career as war correspondent for The Standard. He endured many adventures of derring-do whilst in the company of Garibaldi in Italy and Sir Robert Napier in Abyssinia. The March to Magdala and All but Lost, collections of his reports were published in 1868. During the Franco-Prussian War he spent time with both the German and French sides. He then found himself reporting on campaign events in Russia and Africa. The Illustrated London News as well as The Standard were publishing his reports. After writing of the Spanish Civil War, Henty accompanied the Prince of Wales on a royal tour of India. After many years of service, Henty was starting to weary of the travails of war and conflict, physically and spiritually, and finally resigned.
