Tsimshian Texts (Classic Reprint) by Franz Boas Pdf

Excerpt from Tsimshian d104s The texts are in the Nass River dialect of the Tsimshian language. The dialect is called by the natives nisqa'e. The texts were obtained from four individuals - Philip, Moses, Chief Mountain, and Moody. By far the greater number of them are myths of the tribe. Judging from similar myths which I collected in previous years among the Tsim shian proper,2 they are only moderately well told. Indian Notes and Monograph by George T. Emmons Pdf

Excerpt from Indian Notes and Monograph: Slate Mirros of the Tsimshian The Nishka people occupy the valley of the Nass and form a link between the coast and the interior. While possibly less advanced than the Tsimshian of the coast, they are equally intelligent, and are artistic in a high degree. In fact, I think that the most delicate and pleasing examples of carving and painting gathered throughout the whole extent of the coast are from this people. Shadow House by Jonathan Meuli Pdf

In this fascinating study of Northwest Coast art, Jonathan Meuli has not only outlined a history of ideas associated with Northwest Coast art objects from pre-Contact time to the present day, but has also examined the ways in which the physical location and contexts in which the objects are produced has helped to determine their meanings. Locating his linear historical narrative within a wider exploration of ethnographic art ideas, which emphasizes links across cultures, Meuli examines the differing attitudes towards Northwest Coast material culture, particularly as these are embodied in oral mythic narratives, collection methods and architectural constructions.

Natick Dictionary (Classic Reprint) by James Hammond Trumbull Pdf

Excerpt from Natick Dictionary It is hoped that the book will form the first volume in aseries of vocabularies of the native languages. Such a series, under such supervision as the Bureau will give to the selection and editing of the Works contained in it, will be of great value to students of language; but it will contain no book more valuable in itself or more interesting from its history than Dr Trumbull's Dictionary. Being in Being by Skaay Pdf

Skaay of the Qquuna Qiighawaay may have been one of the greatest Native storytellers of all time. Born in the Haida village of Qquuna about 1827 and crippled by an injury in middle age, he devoted himself to the art of telling stories. As the Haidas' older way of life changed dramatically under the onslaught of smallpox epidemics and contact with the outside world, Skaay became the undisputed master storyteller among them. When the young American linguist John Swanton arrived in the fall of 1900 to record Haida myths, poems, and oral histories, Skaay dictated to him some of his best stories. Included in this volume are three of Skaay's masterpieces, recorded originally by John Swanton and edited and translated by Robert Bringhurst: "The Qquuna Cycle" is the longest extant work of Haida poetry and one of the great monuments of Native American literature; "Raven Travelling" is the most complex trickster story ever recorded on the Northwest Coast; and "The Qquuna Qiighawaay" is the brief and poignant story of Skaay's maternal lineage.
