An American Beach for African Americans by Marsha Dean Phelts Pdf

In the only complete history of Florida’s American Beach to date, Marsha Dean Phelts draws together personal interviews, photos, newspaper articles, memoirs, maps, and official documents to reconstruct the character and traditions of Amelia Island’s 200-acre African American community. In its heyday, when other beaches grudgingly provided only limited access, black vacationers traveled as many as 1,000 miles down the east coast of the United States and hundreds of miles along the Gulf coast to a beachfront that welcomed their business. Beginning in 1781 with the Samuel Harrison homestead on the southern end of Amelia Island, Phelts traces the birth of the community to General Sherman’s Special Field Order No. 15, in which the Union granted many former Confederate coastal holdings, including Harrison’s property, to former slaves. She then follows the lineage of the first African American families known to have settled in the area to descendants remaining there today, including those of Zephaniah Kingsley and his wife, Anna Jai. Moving through the Jim Crow era, Phelts describes the development of American Beach’s predecessors in the early 1900s. Finally, she provides the fullest account to date of the life and contributions of Abraham Lincoln Lewis, the wealthy African American businessman who in 1935, as president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, initiated the purchase and development of the tract of seashore known as American Beach. From Lewis’s arrival on the scene, Phelts follows the community’s sustained development and growth, highlighting landmarks like the Ocean-Vu-Inn and the Blue Palace and concluding with a stirring plea for the preservation of American Beach, which is currently threatened by encroaching development. In a narrative full of firsthand accounts and "old-timer" stories, Phelts, who has vacationed at American Beach since she was four and now lives there, frequently adopts the style of an oral historian to paint what is ultimately a personal and intimate portrait of a community rich in heritage and culture.

Cut the Crap and Close the Gap by Jim Coleman Pdf

Cut the Crap and Close the Gap is written by a Hog Farmer, Fortune 500 Executive and Economic Developer. It’s a practical operating guide for achieving breakthrough levels of performance by closing performance gaps between actual and desired performance and adjusting to exceed expectations. The principles of Cut the Crap and Close the Gap can be used by small and large businesses, not for profit organizations, state and local governments, faith based organizations and even parents. According to Dunn & Bradstreet, 585,000 of the more than 22 million small to medium sized businesses in America close each year. Businesses with fewer than 20 employees have only a 37% chance of surviving for four years and only a 9% chance of surviving for 10 years. Nine out of 10 business failures are caused by a lack of general business management skills including management of staff, operations, sales, marketing and planning. The Cut the Crap and Close the Gap management model requires the courage to question and challenge conventional wisdom and to operate with a spirit of continuous improvement, that things can always be better and that being satisfied with the status quo is totally unacceptable. The foundation for the Cut the Crap and Close the Gap management approach is aligned with the philosophy of Civil rights Activist, Angela Davis, "I'm no longer accepting the things I can not change...I'm changing the things I can not accept". The following chapters are filled with examples of how Jim Coleman has either applied or personally witnessed the use of the Cut the Crap and Close the Gap management approach over the last 30 years.

The true crime story of a father’s murder and a daughter’s discovery of his Jekyll-and-Hyde double-life in pursuit of his killer. Denise Wallace had spent years hiding deadly secrets about her enigmatic father, Wesley Wallace. Wes was a trusted security guard of the Ritz Carlton Palm Beach. He was supposed to protect those who found themselves in his care. But a closer look into his brutal murder revealed a split personality—one that his daughter may have seen but tried to ignore. However, detectives assigned to the case persuaded her to assist them in the capture of her father's killer. The trail would lead from the glitz of Palm Beach to the murky streets of Dixie Highway and end in a courtroom where her father's secret life, and his dangerous penchant for sex slaves, would be revealed. “An engrossing true story about alternative lifestyles, domination, hidden secrets and a late night murder.”—John Ferak, bestselling author of Failure of Justice

Treasuring God in Our Traditions by Noël Piper Pdf

God is the treasure of our lives. He is part of everything we do, think, act, and say-literally, he is a part of us. This precious heirloom of Christ himself must be passed on to future generations. But how? Treasuring God in Our Traditions presents the importance of passing along Christ-centered traditions and a Bible-saturated legacy in Christ to future generations. Noël Piper helps her readers recognize how the "everyday" routines of life and the "especially" celebrations of holidays and dates can be practically passed down to future generations. When parents and grandparents seek to pass along the treasure of God to their children and grandchildren, they will develop and deepen their love for him. When family traditions are rooted in the Bible, the next generations will see that the greatest treasure that anyone can have is the treasure of God.
