Lessons From Nanoelectronics: A New Perspective On Transport (Second Edition) - Part A: Basic Concepts by Supriyo Datta Pdf

Everyone is familiar with the amazing performance of a modern smartphone, powered by a billion-plus nanotransistors, each having an active region that is barely a few hundred atoms long. The same amazing technology has also led to a deeper understanding of the nature of current flow and heat dissipation on an atomic scale which is of broad relevance to the general problems of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics that pervade many different fields. This book is based on a set of two online courses originally offered in 2012 on nanoHUB-U and more recently in 2015 on edX. In preparing the second edition the author decided to split it into parts A and B titled Basic Concepts and Quantum Transport respectively, along the lines of the two courses. A list of available video lectures corresponding to different sections of this volume is provided upfront. To make these lectures accessible to anyone in any branch of science or engineering, the author assume very little background beyond linear algebra and differential equations. However, the author will be discussing advanced concepts that should be of interest even to specialists, who are encouraged to look at his earlier books for additional technical details.

Television Program Master Index by Charles V. Dintrone Pdf

Television history has become one of the hottest areas of research in popular culture. Because the field is relatively new and so wide-ranging, no matter what one is researching much of the relevant material will be found scattered through numerous other works, frustrating scholarly progress. This work makes the television researcher's job easier by providing a single index to 341 books that include information on 1,002 shows. Most of the books deal exclusively with television, though some autobiographies, biographies, Congressional hearings, and works on communication and the media are also indexed. For a show to be included, it must have been carried on NBC, CBS, ABC or Fox and must have been a series. Shows on PBS are generally not included, though exceptions have been made for Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

The Impact of Watching Violent Television Programs on Secondary School Children in Tanzania by Watson Lupogo Masiba Pdf

Violent television programs are highly preferred by children. They stimulate their emotions and increase curiosity about violence-related issues. This means that watching violent television programs has an impact upon their way of perceiving the world around them and acting in response to it. This study investigated the impacts of watching violent television programs on secondary school children in Tanzania. The specific objectives were: to examine children's accessibility to the TV, ascertain the types of violent TV programs and the time children spend watching them, determine the ways in which watching violent TV programs affects their academic performance, find out the impact of watching violent TV programs on their discipline, and examine the role of parents in addressing the impacts of watching violent TV programs upon their children. Results indicate that most secondary school children watch violent TV programs at home in the sitting rooms. They spend an average of three hours per day on weekdays, and seven-and-half hours on weekends, watching movies, music, drama, and informational programs that were identified as the most violent ones. Obviously, spending lots of time watching violent TV programs decreases children's academic performance and discipline. This book is important because it discusses the parents' role in discouraging and limiting children from watching violent TV programs, and choosing appropriate TV programs for them.

How to Watch Television, Second Edition by Ethan Thompson,Jason Mittell Pdf

A new edition that brings the ways we watch and think about television up to the present We all have opinions about the television shows we watch, but television criticism is about much more than simply evaluating the merits of a particular show and deeming it “good” or “bad.” Rather, criticism uses the close examination of a television program to explore that program’s cultural significance, creative strategies, and its place in a broader social context. How to Watch Television, Second Edition brings together forty original essays—more than half of which are new to this edition—from today’s leading scholars on television culture, who write about the programs they care (and think) the most about. Each essay focuses on a single television show, demonstrating one way to read the program and, through it, our media culture. From fashioning blackness in Empire to representation in Orange is the New Black and from the role of the reboot in Gilmore Girls to the function of changing political atmospheres in Roseanne, these essays model how to practice media criticism in accessible language, providing critical insights through analysis—suggesting a way of looking at TV that students and interested viewers might emulate. The contributors discuss a wide range of television programs past and present, covering many formats and genres, spanning fiction and non-fiction, broadcast, streaming, and cable. Addressing shows from TV’s earliest days to contemporary online transformations of the medium, How to Watch Television, Second Edition is designed to engender classroom discussion among television critics of all backgrounds. Integrated Perspectives in Global Studies provides readers with an analytical framework that moves beyond academic debates about the definition of globalization. The material is organized around substantive themes that are both accessible to students and relevant to what is going on in the world today. This student-friendly introduction begins by highlighting the deep historical interconnections between political, economic, and social forces that shape our world today. The readings then focus on pressing, real-world issues such as global inequality, neo-imperialism, racism, environmental degradation, and global women's movements. The final section of the book explores critical perspectives on sustainable development, human rights, and global governance. Throughout the text abstract ideas are grounded in concrete, highly-relatable examples. Main points and key concepts are clearly listed to enhance review and comprehension. Now featuring essay questions at the end of each section, Integrated Perspective in Global Studies can be used in courses on political science, international relations, and globalization. The book continually and explicitly connects the dots, making it possible for students to easily understand and connect complex issues. Philip McCarty is an award-winning lecturer in global and international studies at the University of California, Irvine.
