Shortly before and shortly after World War I some 103 new crofts were created on Tiree and 35 existing ones enlarged. This was a remarkable achievement. Their impact and legacy on the island has been wide ranging and long lasting. By contrast only 10 new holdings were created on Coll. Both islands are remarkably similar in geographical size. The book, for the first time, and in considerable detail, examines the land settlement schemes that created these holdings. It also explains the different experience between the two islands in terms of land settlement activity.
The book analyses, in unprecedented detail, the creation of new crofts and the enlargement of existing ones in Scotland in the Outer Hebrides; and in the Inner Hebrides on Skye, Raasay, Tiree and Coll. The process is generally referred to as 'land settlement'.The principal period covered is 1919 to 1939 when land settlement was at its peak. However, the period beforehand from 1897 to the outbreak of World War I is also dealt with in some considerable detail.These islands were the centre of land settlement activity in the Highlands and Islands. They were profoundly affected by land settlement, more so than anywhere else. Very few new crofts have been created since.It breaks new ground by analysing how land settlement legislation and policies were translated into action on the ground.

Almost 200 new crofts were created on Harris between 1900 and 1933. This represents one in three of the 564 crofts present on the island today. Many were on land bought by the Government. And some 76 existing crofts were enlarged. As a result, most of the land cleared in the nineteenth century was repopulated.Over 100 years later, two large scale and heavily publicly financed community land buyouts took place. They brought two-thirds of the island into community ownership. Both of these publicly financed initiatives are important to the recovery of the island from the impacts of the Clearances.

Some 1,700 new croft holdings were created and around 1,300 existing ones enlarged in the Hebrides between 1900 and 1939. A large majority of the new holdings had new houses built on them. Many of the existing crofts which were enlarged had existing houses on them improved or enlarged. Few crofts have been created or enlarged since. However, very little has been written about the new croft houses themselves. What were they like? Why were they like that? How did they differ from those already there? Were they successful? And what was their legacy? Addressing these and other questions lies at the core of this book.
Why are there so few crofts on Mull today? It is Scotland's fourth largest island, yet it has relatively few. Is there much scope to reverse this situation and create more in the future? Between 1900 and 1939 some 1,700 new croft holdings were created and around 1,300 existing ones enlarged in the Hebrides. However, on Mull only 35 new crofts were created during this period, and only five existing crofts were enlarged. Why was this? And why were so few new crofts created in the early part of the 20th century? Answering these questions lies at the heart of this book.
