Twentieth - Century Crofting Schemes on Tiree and Coll by Bob Chambers Pdf

Shortly before and shortly after World War I some 103 new crofts were created on Tiree and 35 existing ones enlarged. This was a remarkable achievement. Their impact and legacy on the island has been wide ranging and long lasting. By contrast only 10 new holdings were created on Coll. Both islands are remarkably similar in geographical size. The book, for the first time, and in considerable detail, examines the land settlement schemes that created these holdings. It also explains the different experience between the two islands in terms of land settlement activity.

For Want of Land by Bob Chambers Pdf

The book analyses, in unprecedented detail, the creation of new crofts and the enlargement of existing ones in Scotland in the Outer Hebrides; and in the Inner Hebrides on Skye, Raasay, Tiree and Coll. The process is generally referred to as 'land settlement'.The principal period covered is 1919 to 1939 when land settlement was at its peak. However, the period beforehand from 1897 to the outbreak of World War I is also dealt with in some considerable detail. These islands were the centre of land settlement activity in the Highlands and Islands. They were profoundly affected by land settlement, more so than anywhere else. Very few new crofts have been created since. It breaks new ground by analysing how land settlement legislation and policies were translated into action on the ground.

Scotland by David M. Munro,Bruce M. Gittings,Royal Scottish Geographical Society Pdf

The first comprehensive guide to Scotland since the 19th century, edited by the Director of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. It is remarkable that in this age of information there is no up-to-date guide to the places of Scotland. That situation is about to be remedied with the publication of Scotland: An Encyclopedia of Places and Landscape, edited by Dr David Munro, Director of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. This authoritative, comprehensive gazetteer will include over 8,000 entries on cities, towns and villages, mountains, lochs and rivers, visitor attractions and monuments throughout the nation. Each entry places its subject in an appropriate historical, geological or environmental context, providing essential information of interest to a wide range of potential users. The book starts with an introductory essay on the Landscapes of Scotland. There is also an extensive glossary of terms (including Gaelic words incorporated into many place names), and a detailed bibliography. Street plans are provided for over 100 main towns and cities, as are maps of each administrative area, spread throughout the book. There is a fully indexed full-colour atlas, providing a wealth of extra cartographic information.

The review of the less favoured areas scheme by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee Pdf

In this report, 'The Review of the Less Favoured Areas Scheme (HL Paper 98)', the European Union Committee calls for the swift adoption of reforms to the EU Less Favoured Areas (LFA) scheme, a method of distributing EU agricultural funding to disadvantaged areas where farming land might otherwise be abandoned. The report stresses that the justification for the LFA scheme is to maintain farming in marginal areas where farming activity generates benefits for the environment and landscape, rather than to compensate for regional economic hardship.

A Practical Guide to Crofting Law by Brian Inkster Pdf

This practical guide is an introduction to crofting law for those with an interest in it or who may touch upon it, whether that is lawyers, law students, land agents, crofters, landlords, or anyone else with an interest in it. It covers the main issues briefly and concisely, aiming to highlight the complexity of crofting law and the pitfalls and traps that await the uninitiated. The aim is that readers will, as a result, be better versed in the basics of crofting law. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Brian Inkster is a solicitor specialising in crofting law. He is the Hon Secretary of the Crofting Law Group, a member of the Crofting Group of Scottish Land & Estates, the Cross-Party Group on Crofting at the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish Government Crofting Stakeholder Forum, the Crofting Register Stakeholder Forum and the Scottish Government Crofting Bill Group. Brian blogs about crofting law at the Crofting Law Blog (croftinglawblog.com) and regularly writes articles for The Crofter (the trade magazine of the Scottish Crofting Federation). He also provides comment and articles to local and national newspapers and magazines such as The West Highland Free Press, The Shetland Times, The Oban Times, The Northern Times, The Scotsman, The Herald, The Press & Journal, The Scottish Farmer, Scottish Legal News and The Journal of the Law Society of Scotland. It established for the first time in law that, in certain circumstances, you can have a servitude right to park a car ancillary to a right of access. Brian obtained the distinction of being named Solicitor of the Year at the Law Awards of Scotland in 2006. He was called "a one man Scottish legal institution" in the Recommended Law Firm Guide 2010. At the Law Awards of Scotland in 2014 he was recognised as Managing Partner of the Year. Brian has an active interest in entrepreneurship, marketing, technology and corporate social responsibility in relation to running a law firm. Gaining Back the Ground by Bob Chambers Pdf

Almost 200 new crofts were created on Harris between 1900 and 1933. This represents one in three of the 564 crofts present on the island today. Many were on land bought by the Government. And some 76 existing crofts were enlarged. As a result, most of the land cleared in the nineteenth century was repopulated.Over 100 years later, two large scale and heavily publicly financed community land buyouts took place. They brought two-thirds of the island into community ownership. Both of these publicly financed initiatives are important to the recovery of the island from the impacts of the Clearances.

All Built to the Same Pattern by Bob Chambers Pdf

Some 1,700 new croft holdings were created and around 1,300 existing ones enlarged in the Hebrides between 1900 and 1939. A large majority of the new holdings had new houses built on them. Many of the existing crofts which were enlarged had existing houses on them improved or enlarged. Few crofts have been created or enlarged since. However, very little has been written about the new croft houses themselves. What were they like? Why were they like that? How did they differ from those already there? Were they successful? And what was their legacy? Addressing these and other questions lies at the core of this book.

Mull, an Island of Few Crofts by Bob Chambers Pdf

Why are there so few crofts on Mull today? It is Scotland's fourth largest island, yet it has relatively few. Is there much scope to reverse this situation and create more in the future? Between 1900 and 1939 some 1,700 new croft holdings were created and around 1,300 existing ones enlarged in the Hebrides. However, on Mull only 35 new crofts were created during this period, and only five existing crofts were enlarged. Why was this? And why were so few new crofts created in the early part of the 20th century? Answering these questions lies at the heart of this book.
