Twin Adventures from a Simpler Time by Dotty Cronan Pdf

Remember when ...? Remember when a massive horse clip-clopped to your curb, pulling a huge wagon full of clear, glass, bottles of milk? Remeber when your days were spent roaming woodlands, climbing sway-in the-breeze trees, and discovering mysterious things? In the 1940's, time was not an issue except to, "get home in time for dinner," and "get back home before dark." If these recollections are stored in your memory bank, here is your chance to relive those carefree days and double your pleasure by experiencing them with a set of mischievous twins: one boy, one girl. For those who did not experience such childhood freedom in later decades, here is an opportunity to enjoy a totally new world, a wonderland where kids got to explore the world around them and learn some valuable lessons along the way. For instance, it's fun to discover mysterious green things hanging in trees, but horrifying to find them loaded with bees.

The Fowl Twins by Eoin Colfer Pdf

One week after their eleventh birthday, the Fowl twins--scientist Myles, and Beckett, the force of nature--are left in the care of house security (NANNI) for a single night. In that time they befriend a troll who has clawed his way through the earth's crust to the surface. Unfortunately for the troll, he is being chased by a nefarious nobleman and an interrogating nun, who both need the magical creature for their own gain, as well as a fairy-in-training who has been assigned to protect him. The boys and their new troll best friend escape and go on the run. Along the way they get shot at, kidnapped, buried, arrested, threatened, killed (temporarily), and discover that the strongest bond in the world is not the one forged by covalent electrons in adjacent atoms, but the one that exists between a pair of twins.

Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China by Haun Saussy Pdf

"China" and "the West," "us" and "them," the "subject" and the "non-subject"--these and other dualisms furnish China watchers, both inside and outside China, with a pervasive, ready-made set of definitions immune to empirical disproof. But what does this language of essential difference accomplish? The essays in this book are an attempt to cut short the recitation of differences and to answer this question. In six interpretive studies of China, the author examines the ways in which the networks of assumption and consensus that make communication possible within a discipline affect collective thinking about the object of study. Among other subjects, these essays offer a historical and historiographical introduction to the problem of comparison and deal with translation, religious proselytization, semiotics, linguistics, cultural bilingualism, writing systems, the career of postmodernism in China, and the role of China as an imaginary model for postmodernity in the West. Against the reigning simplifications, these essays seek to restore the interpretation of China to the complexity and impurity of the historical situations in which it is always caught. The chief goal of the essays in this book is not to expose errors in interpreting China but to use these misunderstandings as a basis for devising better methodologies for comparative studies.

Maya by Simon Wolfe Pdf

An adventure awaits as Milo sits and watches the world going by, lingering at the appointed place for the shaman-like Tommy as he chews over the twists and turns that have brought him back to where the echoes seem to know him, where it feels like home. Maya is an illusion of the senses that blocks out our truth, and what is revealed as its journey unfolds, accompanied by memories that resonate, music that’s dear and the too few good friends, is a jumble of yearnings: to belong, to understand, to achieve true happiness, all in a world of treachery where deep running currents are obscured from the eye; where broken relationships, trip-wire pitfalls and the fight with one’s own desires can so often be disastrous. This beautiful tale morphs gently from prosaic history to something less sure, shimmering between what’s gone before, what is yet to come and what may never be, yet all the while remaining honest right through to the surreal conclusion where redemption is found. Full of surprises, this is the heartfelt tale of one who knows. It speaks to us all.

Rule of Sympathy by A. Rai Pdf

The Rule of Sympathy is a social and historical critique of sympathy in British discourse in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Although initially associated with feminized or effeminate forms of sentimental discourse (the romance, the novel, the gothic), sympathy came to function as a key technology of gender and race in new evangelical social movements, such as abolitionism and missionizing. Amit Rai argues that sympathy was a paradoxical mode of power. The differences of racial, gender and class inequalities that increasingly divided the object and agent of sympathy were precisely what must be bridged through identification. Yet without such differences, which were differences of power, sympathy itself would be impossible. This paradoxical mode of power transformed the ways in which people came to think of how best to manage, order, and govern individuals and populations in the late eighteenth century.

Saratoga Silks by M.L. Stevens Pdf

Saratoga Silks is a story of American Dreamers and Doers taking risks, falling down and giving friends a leg up. Michael Butler is a high school teacher in Portland, Maine with a growing gambling problem. He feels stuck in his life and escapes to Saratoga Springs, New York each summer to cut loose and enjoy the horses, Adirondacks and Lake George. This summer in Saratoga he will cross paths with the people and events that alter him and his life forever. The healing springs and majesty of Lake George will be a background for a season of redemption and growth. Michael crossed the state line and left New England behind, entering shiny New York. There had been gateway years in his life thus far that connected two distinct stretches of belief systems. He hoped this would be one of them. Something needed to happen soon. His bills were getting larger and the gambling was getting more frequent. An older part of him was fading but he did not know yet what would come to replace it. He was feeling stuck and this year as he looked around the teachers lounge at the older, tired faces, he shuddered to realize it possible that nothing would ever change. Taking a deep breath, he thought of the long discarded snake skins he would find when camping at Lake George. Or the abandoned cocoons hanging from branches at one of his secret island hideaways. There were so many signs of life and rebirth on the lake. That is where he would spend the 4th of July this year. Quietly. Alone in his new Bean tent. Watching silent fireworks sparkle in the distance. from Saratoga Silks
