They escape by accidentally breaking into ZOAR II, a secret biosphere constructed to house the president of the United States and staff if a nuclear war were to occur, then in the 1960s. Unable to find an exit, they are trapped there for ten years, thus subject to the indictment of being absent without cause during the Vietnam War, an act punishable by death. How they survive this isolation from society, their fundamental differences on issues, and bearing a child they name Hope is the essence of this adventure. Finally, Beth and Jeff miraculously find the way out of ZOAR II. To avoid prosecution for the AWOL not of their making, they assume new identities. Seeking a second refuge, they settle in Seaside, California.

Climate Change and Adaptation Planning for Ports by Adolf K. Y. Ng,Austin Becker,Stephen Cahoon,Shu-Ling Chen,Paul Earl,Zaili Yang Pdf

As key links in transportation and supply chains, the effect of climate change on seaports has broad implications for the development prospects of the global economy. However, the picture is very uncertain because the impacts of climate change will be felt very differently around the world, both positively and negatively. This book addresses the need for quality theoretical analysis, highly innovative assessment methodologies, and insightful empirical global experiences so as to identify the best international practices, planning and appropriate policies to effectively adapt to, develop resilience, and indeed benefit from, the impacts posed by climate change on transportation and supply chains. This book comprises of theories, methodologies and case studies from five continents (Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Oceania) addressing climate change and the adaptation planning of ports and transportation infrastructures. With reputable contributors from academic, policymaking and professional sectors, it critically analyses the recent attempts by ports in establishing adaptation plans and strategies so to enhance ports and other transportation infrastructures’ resilience to the climate change risks. This is the first book of its kind to focus on climate change adaptation for ports. It offers useful and comprehensive guidance to senior policymakers, industrial practitioners and researchers who are eager to understand the dynamics between climate change, adaptation planning of ports and transportation infrastructures.

Collected Short Stories by Jerome Konsker Pdf

At the age of nineteen, I left college at New York University after deciding that I did not want to be an electrical engineer and that I would not make the varsity basketball team. That meant two years in the army. It was an exciting test of my ability to function away from home. This was very late 1952. There was a war on in the Far East. My Uncle Sam decided that, being tall and strong, I would make good rifleman. After making me what he had proposed, he sent me to Korea to test my skills. They were sufficient to stay alive during the last few months leading to the truce. It was signed on July 27, 1953. I was sent to division headquarters on a mission that eludes my memory. But I did remember that I wanted to get out of the infantry company. The division newspaper beckoned, and the noncom in charge decided that I wrote well enough to join his staff. Besides, he needed someone with frontline experience. I became a cub reporter and, later, an official US Army correspondent. I began to read voraciously, starting with Ernie Pyle and Hemingway. I found my passion. The GI Bill allowed me to study, then give up journalism in favor of literature and the theater as a playwright and director. Circumstances in 1958 caused me to stop my pursuit of theater and to make a living for a family. I’ve never regretted that decision. A vacation visit to the Korean War Memorial in the year 2000 in Washington, D.C., awakened my desire to pick up the pen again. It started with minor poetry, one-act plays, short stories, and this novella. My protagonists are often soldiers, past , present, or future. However, I don’t write war stories. I only know how war can effect the minds of those who experienced it.

Ports in a Storm by John D. Donahue,Mark H. Moore Pdf

A Brookings Institution Press and Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation publication In Ports in a Storm a team of Harvard Kennedy School scholars focus diverse conceptual lenses on a single high-stakes management task—enhancing port security across the United States. Their aims are two: to understand how a public manager might confront that complex undertaking, and to explore the similarities, differences, and complementarities of their alternative approaches to public management. The book takes as its pivot point the singular case of U.S. Coast Guard Captain Suzanne Englebert and her leadership of efforts to secure America's ports after the September 11 attacks. The Coast Guard had always been responsible for securing America's ports and coastline. But now it was tasked with safeguarding these critical, complex, and vulnerable assets during a time of war, a job it clearly could not handle alone. Ports in a Storm considers the monumental challenge of driving rapid change in a complex system involving hundreds of private organizations and scores of government agencies with their operations intricately intertwined. The book examines Englebert's actions from varied conceptual vantage points, sometimes critiquing questionable calls but more often celebrating her initiative, creativity, persistence, and skill. The authors use the Coast Guard episode as a testing ground for the eclectic intellectual constructs they have been developing to guide public managers. Instead of starting with theory and searching for examples that fit, they begin with the concrete and then harness scholarship to the service of better practice. And rather than mimic management principles from the business world, they tailor their approach to the very different challenges of managing in a public sector context. The volume allows readers in both the scholarly and practical worlds to see how the theories measure up. Contributors, including the two volume editors, are Robert D. Behn, John D. Donahue, Archon Fung, Stephen Goldsmith, Elaine Kamarck, Herman B. Leonard, Mark H. Moore, Malcolm K. Sparrow, Pamela Varley, and Richard Zeckhauser.
