Undercurrents of the Second Empire by Albert D. Vandam Pdf

Excerpt from Undercurrents of the Second Empire: Notes and Recollections Even before the fall of the Second Empire, historians of high attainments like Lanfrey and Taxile Delord were "whittling" the gigantic figure of Napoleon I. They were probably prompted by a desire similar to that which caused Jacob to pill white strakes in the rods of green poplar and hazel and chestnut tree in Laban's field. With this difference, though, that Lanfrey and Taine after him did not set the whittled Titan before the mentally strongest progenitors of the coming generations, but before the mentally weakest. Lanfrey and Taine have had a kind of reward, notably among French Republicans, who have brought forth a generation which keeps yelling that the Napoleonic gods are dead. The Mission of Vincent Benedetti to Berlin 1864–1870 by Willard Allen Fletcher Pdf

The historical significance of the period 1864-1870, epitomized by the establishment of Prussian hegemony in Gennany, has been per petuated in numerous studies. The diplomatic history of these decisive years has proven especially fascinating, for the fundamental changes in Gennany's political frame had a momentous influence upon the course of European history. The war of 1866 destroyed the last vestiges of Austrian supremacy in Gennany and inaugurated a reorganization under Prussian domination. The international repercussions of this transfonnation in the heart of Europe are fully reflected in the diplo macy of the period, in view of the disruptive effect upon the existing power equilibrium. The manner in which Napoleon III and his govern ment reacted to the events was of crucial portent for the future of his empire. An inquiry into Ambassador Benedetti's mission to Berlin contributes materially to an understanding of imperial diplomacy, primarily as related to Prussia, in this critical period. The present study was suggested by Dr. Lynn M. Case and began to take shape in his seminars on European diplomatic history. Bene detti's constant association with French diplomacy between 1864 and 1870 seemed to warrant a detailed and critical examination of his mission. Despite the advent of the telegraph diplomatic representa tives continued to fonn an important part of the diplomatic appa ratus and Benedetti was no exception. Past studies based exclusively on his career are very few. Frensdorff's Preussische Jahrbucher article appeared shortly after the outbreak of the war in 1870.

France: An Adventure History by Graham Robb Pdf

A wholly original history of France, filled with a lifetime’s knowledge and passion—by the author of the New York Times bestseller Parisians. Beginning with the Roman army’s first recorded encounter with the Gauls and ending in the era of Emmanuel Macron, France takes readers on an endlessly entertaining journey through French history. Frequently hilarious, always surprising, Graham Robb’s France combines the stylistic versatility of a novelist with the deep understanding of a scholar. Robb’s own adventures and discoveries while living, working, and traveling in France connect this tour through space and time with on-the-ground experience. There are scenes of wars and revolutions from the plains of Provence to the slums and boulevards of Paris. Robb conveys with wit and precision what it felt like to look over the shoulder of a young Louis XIV as he planned the vast garden of Versailles, and the dangerous thrill of having a ringside seat at the French revolution. Some of the protagonists may be familiar, but appear here in a very different light—Caesar, Charlemagne, Louis XIV, Napoleon Bonaparte, General Charles de Gaulle. This extraordinary narrative is the fruit of decades of research and thirty thousand miles on a self-propelled, two-wheeled time machine (a bicycle). Even seasoned Francophiles will wonder if they really know that terra incognita on the edge of Europe that is currently referred to as “France.”

The Mortal Napoleon III by Roger Lawrence Williams Pdf

A reappraisal of Napoleon the man. Roger Williams' biographical study shows how medical evidence can be used as historical data to refine our view of the past. For an accurate picture, he examines the medical evidence of the case, the emperor's psychological make-up, and the external pressures on him: the Crimean and Franco-Prussian wars, government reforms, the competence of his advisers, the political finagling of the empress, the assumptions and reactions of foreign governments.
