This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the emerging underwater challenges facing India in the Indian Ocean region. With major economic powers like China, the United States, and Russia modernising their submarine fleets and building advanced unmanned underwater vessels to enhance surveillance capabilities, the competition in the Indo-Pacific underwater domain has intensified. The book · Focuses on the issues of detecting, tracking, and classifying submarines/underwater drones in the Indian Ocean. · Examines the Indian Navy’s present anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities in combating underwater threats and discusses the scope for inter-agency, inter-departmental cooperation framework to monitor the undersea activity in the region. · Studies the naval composition and strengths of India and other countries in the neighbourhood and reviews maritime domain awareness practices employed by leading navies including NATO for submarine detection. · Assesses the technology development efforts to deal with these challenges and brings out recommendations. An expert study of undersea surveillance, this book will be indispensable to students and researchers of military and strategic studies, defence studies, critical security, conflict resolution, intelligence studies, and security studies. It will also be of interest to governments, naval establishments, think tanks, and public policy institutes.

Horrors of The Sea by Tiya Chatterji Pdf

Horrors of the Sea captures maritime myths and widely-believed legends perfectly aged over centuries, though some are contemporary. Set against the backdrop of tranquil coastal India, the book consists of 15 eerie and unconventional tales that explore the dark world of sea witches, unknown entities lurking in the dark, the doll-faced mermaid, and monsters encountered when driving in the twilight. Some stories explore human curiosity about the mystical elements and their fatal or fateful interactions. Others revolve around how human emotions often fall prey to evil entities and their frightening outcomes. Belonging to a comparatively unexplored genre and marinated with the author's own experiences, creativity, and imagination, the stories have a distinctive touch. These tales aim at infotainment, a great way to satiate the appetite for horror while preserving our folklore.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles by Nuno Cruz Pdf

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are remarkable machines that revolutionized the process of gathering ocean data. Their major breakthroughs resulted from successful developments of complementary technologies to overcome the challenges associated with autonomous operation in harsh environments. Most of these advances aimed at reaching new application scenarios and decreasing the cost of ocean data collection, by reducing ship time and automating the process of data gathering with accurate geo location. With the present capabilities, some novel paradigms are already being employed to further exploit the on board intelligence, by making decisions on line based on real time interpretation of sensor data. This book collects a set of self contained chapters covering different aspects of AUV technology and applications in more detail than is commonly found in journal and conference papers. They are divided into three main sections, addressing innovative vehicle design, navigation and control techniques, and mission preparation and analysis. The progress conveyed in these chapters is inspiring, providing glimpses into what might be the future for vehicle technology and applications.

Tracing the Undersea Dragon by Amit Ray Pdf

This book is a comprehensive study of the development of China’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). It offers insights into the secretive world of nuclear submarines and ballistic missiles of the Chinese (PLA) Navy and studies how these are likely to grow in the next two decades. The volume examines the technological origins of the design and development of Chinese nuclear submarines, ballistic missiles, and their naval construction capabilities. It provides an analysis of the underlying Chinese nuclear doctrine, China’s maritime geographical constraints for submarine operations, and the credibility of its sea-based deterrence. It draws upon strategy, nuclear policy, technology, geography, and operational considerations to holistically predict the likely SSBN force levels of the PLA Navy for various scenarios. The book also assesses the spectrum of threats likely from the undersea domain for India and other nations in the Indo-Pacific region. A key text on an obscure but vital facet of Chinese defence studies, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of strategic affairs, international relations and disarmament studies, peace and conflict studies, geopolitics, foreign policy, Indo-Pacific studies, and diplomacy.

The Belt and Road Initiative and the Politics of Connectivity by Bhumitra Chakma,Xiudian Dai Pdf

This volume analyses New Delhi’s reaction to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the rise of politics of connectivity and infrastructure building which has heightened Sino-Indian rivalry in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It can be evidenced that the BRI has transformed the Sino-Indian dynamics from a ‘managed rivalry’ to an intense geo-political competition. It is contended that competition is inevitable when two powers rise in the same neighbourhood. The Indian government has opposed the BRI since its inception noting that the ‘BRI violates India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity’ because one of the flagship BRI projects - the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) - runs through (Pakistan-controlled) Kashmir which India claims to be its own territory. It has consistently maintained that China’s ‘connectivity initiatives must be based on universally recognized international norms, good governance, rule of law, openness, transparency and equality, and must be pursued in a manner that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity’ of other states. Beyond those stated reservations, New Delhi is concerned about the BRI infrastructure and connectivity projects in the smaller South Asian countries and the Indian Ocean littoral states. India has traditionally viewed South Asia and the IOR as its backyard over which it has historically maintained a position of influence. It is apprehensive that the BRI projects will enhance Beijing’s stature and undermine India’s influence in the region. In eleven chapters including Introduction and Conclusion, this book explores the dimensions of the rivalry and analyses the causes, dynamics and implications of an accelerated Sino-Indian competition.

India-U.S.A. Relations| Change, Continuity and Transformation by D Dhanuraj Pdf

The India-U.S.A. relationship has been turbulent because of the vagaries of the Cold War, followed by a unipolar world order. Now, with an emergent multipolar world order, India offers the U.S.A. a valuable opportunity as a pivot to Asia and the much-contested Indo-Pacific overtures. As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there are conversations about what the emerging world power dynamics will look like. Although there are many speculations, there is no consensus. However, one pertinent agreement is regarding the rising influence of China in the region and shifting power dynamics in world geopolitics. India features as a prominent element in America’s rebalancing strategy and framework. Perhaps, the single most important testament to this is the rechristening of Asia Pacific as Indo-Pacific, bringing into light the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean in America’s approach to the region. This newfound collaborative approach has spilled over into strategic and defence partnerships, among many other areas of enduring cooperation. In this context, CPPR in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai, organised a two-day international conference on ‘Indo-U.S. Relations: Change, Continuity and Transformation’ in Kochi on April 19-20, 2022, with a view to advancing the conversations in Indo-U.S. foreign policy cooperation. This is a publication of five research articles from the conference proceedings in five chapters. The chapters discuss common interests and areas of difference in India-U.S.A. relations that are expected to influence policy-making. Many of these are under active consideration by policymakers and are high on the agenda of experts who delve deep into these issues and academics who study and teach. We hope that the scholarly papers in this volume will add value to the conversations and deliberations on Indo-U.S. relations.

The New Age of Naval Power in the Indo-Pacific by Catherine L. Grant,Alessio Patalano,James A. Russell Pdf

A new framework contextualizes crucial international security issues at sea in the Indo-Pacific Competition at sea is once again a central issue of international security. Nowhere is the urgency to address state-on-state competition at sea more strongly felt than in the Indo-Pacific region, where freedom of navigation is challenged by regional states’ continuous investments in naval power, and the renewed political will to use it to undermine its principles. The New Age of Naval Power in the Indo-Pacific provides an original framework in which five “factors of influence” explain how and why naval power matters in this pivotal part of the world. An international group of contributors make the case that these five factors draw upon a longstanding influence of naval power on regional dynamics and impact the extent to which different states in the region use naval power: the capacity to exert control over sea-lanes, the capacity to deploy a nuclear deterrent at sea, the capacity to implement the law of the sea in an advantageous way, the ability to control marine resources, and the capacity for technological innovation. The New Age of Naval Power in the Indo-Pacific offers a fresh approach for academics and policy makers seeking to navigate the complexity of maritime security and regional affairs.
