Words from the Speaking Soul... by Michael Lafears, Jr. Pdf

"Words from a Speaking Soul...Life's Unheard Cries" is an inspiring and uplifting view into the common man's soul. This book highlights a variety of subject matters that reaches people of various walks of life. Behind these pages you will discover poems about love, heartbreak, religion, politics, overcoming adversity, the positive image of women and men...plus SO MUCH MORE! As I wrote this book, I envisioned touching individual lives and being able to relate to personal experiences, ideas, and thoughts that many of you may have felt (prior to discovering this book) that no one understood. These pages contain more than just poems, they also represent the pages of "life". Just as in life, there is something different with each turn. "Words from a Speaking Soul...Life's Unheard Cries", reveals the emotions we all have yet at times are reluctant to express, or they may simply go undetected by the outside world. We wear smiles in the public eye, but behind those smiles lie the pains and struggles we face behind closed doors. The soul is what allows us to live and have purpose, but if not heard, it can be likened unto a slave chained with a muzzle-imprisoned in solitary. Your soul is meant to live freely and freedom is what this book delivers! This modern day classic is about the empowerment of the spoken word and literary "EXPRESSION!”

The Hatred of Poetry by Ben Lerner Pdf

No art has been denounced as often as poetry. It's even bemoaned by poets: "I, too, dislike it," wrote Marianne Moore. "Many more people agree they hate poetry," Ben Lerner writes, "than can agree what poetry is. I, too, dislike it and have largely organized my life around it and do not experience that as a contradiction because poetry and the hatred of poetry are inextricable in ways it is my purpose to explore." In this inventive and lucid essay, Lerner takes the hatred of poetry as the starting point of his defense of the art. He examines poetry's greatest haters (beginning with Plato's famous claim that an ideal city had no place for poets, who would only corrupt and mislead the young) and both its greatest and worst practitioners, providing inspired close readings of Keats, Dickinson, McGonagall, Whitman, and others. Throughout, he attempts to explain the noble failure at the heart of every truly great and truly horrible poem: the impulse to launch the experience of an individual into a timeless communal existence. In The Hatred of Poetry, Lerner has crafted an entertaining, personal, and entirely original examination of a vocation no less essential for being impossible.

Ideography and Chinese Language Theory by Timothy Michael O’Neill Pdf

This book is a much-needed scholarly intervention and postcolonial corrective that examines why and when and how misunderstandings of Chinese writing came about and showcases the long history of Chinese theories of language. 'Ideography' as such assumes extra-linguistic, trans-historical, universal 'ideas' which are an outgrowth of Platonism and thus unique to European history. Classical Chinese discourse assumes that language (and writing) is an arbitrary artifact invented by sages for specific reasons at specific times in history. Language by this definition is an ever-changing technology amenable to historical manipulation; language is not the House of Being, but rather a historically embedded social construct that encodes quotidian human intentions and nothing more. These are incommensurate epistemes, each with its own cultural milieu and historical context. By comparing these two traditions, this study historicizes and decolonializes popular notions about Chinese characters, exposing the Eurocentrism inherent in all theories of ideography. Ideography and Chinese Language Theory will be of significant interest to historians, sinologists, theorists, and scholars in other branches of the humanities.

Reluctant Modernists by Peter Edgerly Firchow Pdf

The essays collected here deal with modernist writers who, on the whole, felt 'reluctant' about their modernist status because they believed that it was just as important to look backward as it was to look forward. Indeed, for most of them looking backward was more important because it was only through the past that one could understand one's proper place in the present and in the future. That is why in Huxley's Brave New World it is the rejection of the past in the future - and by implication in the present - that makes its satire so penetrating. Modernism, in other words, means for these writers not a radical break with the past but a continuing search for what still connects them (and us) vitally with it. Peter Firchow, Professor of English at the University of Minnesota, is the author of several books on modern and modernist literary subjects, including books on Huxley, Conrad, and Auden. The publication of some of his hitherto uncollected essays in this volume is intended to honor

Didactical Phenomenology of Mathematical Structures by Hans Freudenthal Pdf

The launch ofa new book series is always a challenging eventn ot only for the Editorial Board and the Publisher, but also, and more particularly, for the first author. Both the Editorial Board and the Publisher are delightedt hat the first author in this series isw ell able to meet the challenge. Professor Freudenthal needs no introduction toanyone in the Mathematics Education field and it is particularly fitting that his book should be the first in this new series because it was in 1968 that he, and Reidel, produced the first issue oft he journal Edu cational Studies in Mathematics. Breakingfresh ground is therefore nothing new to Professor Freudenthal and this book illustrates well his pleasure at such a task. To be strictly correct the ‘ground’ which he has broken here is not new, but aswith Mathematics as an Educational Task and Weeding and Sowing, it is rather the novelty oft he manner in which he has carried out his analysis which provides us with so many fresh perspectives. It is our intention that this new book series should provide those who work int he emerging discipline of mathematicseducation with an essential resource, and at a time of considerable concern about the whole mathematics cu rriculum this book represents just such resource. Histories of Violence by Brad Evans,Terrell Carver Pdf

While there is a tacit appreciation that freedom from violence will lead to more prosperous relations among peoples, violence continues to be deployed for various political and social ends. Yet the problem of violence still defies neat description, subject to many competing interpretations. Histories of Violence offers an accessible yet compelling examination of the problem of violence as it appears in the corpus of canonical figures – from Hannah Arendt to Frantz Fanon, Michel Foucault to Slavoj Žižek – who continue to influence and inform contemporary political, philosophical, sociological, cultural, and anthropological study. Written by a team of internationally renowned experts, this is an essential interrogation of post-war critical thought as it relates to violence.

Woodshed Wisdom by John W. Stevens Pdf

This book is a compilation of 57 essays on diverse subjects ranging from anthropomorphism to failed batteries. They’re from a portfolio of more than 400 articles I’ve written over the past 40 years which have been published in various newspapers and magazines under the byline Woodshed Wisdom. I named it that because much of the wisdom I’ve attained was imparted to me behind the woodshed. My writing was influenced by my father, Oliver Ross Stevens, who was Outdoor Editor for the Manchester Union Leader and President of New England Outdoor Writers Association. It is rewarding to note that my grandchildren, Jack and Megan Stevens, still young students, are recognized and published authors

Reading T.S. Eliot by G. Atkins Pdf

This book offers an exciting new approach to T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets as it shows why it should be read both closely and in relation to Eliot's other works, notably the poems The Waste Land, 'The Hollow Men,' and Ash-Wednesday.
