It borders Russia to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, Romania, Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south. Although Ukraine has only been independent for seventeen years, it has an ancient history. In IX century the territory of Ukraine was a center of the East Slavic civilization, forming the state of Kievan Rus' which disintegrated in the 12th century [1]. At that period of time Kiev was the major political and cultural center in Eastern Europe. From the 14th century the territory of Ukraine was divided among a number of regional powers. As a result of such disintegration, in the 19th century the largest part of Ukraine was integrated into the Russian Empire, with the rest under Austro-Hungarian control [1]. In 1917 and 1918 three separate Ukrainian republics declared independence. However by 1921 the western part of the traditional territory had been incorporated into Poland and the larger central and eastern part became one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union. Later after the German and Soviet invasions of Poland in 1939 the western Ukrainian regions were also incorporated into the Soviet Union [2]. The Ukrainian national idea persevered during the Soviet period was pressed mostly by Stalin who imposed terror campaigns against the intellectual class. Plast: Ukrainian Scouting, a Unique Story by Orest Subtelny Pdf

In this book, the renowned historian Orest Subtelny, who wrote Ukraine: A History, describes to us how, in 1911, a small group of teachers, whose people lived under foreign rule, at the crossroads of empires, took Baden Powell's idea, adapted it to their circumstances and formed a scouting organization for the betterment of Ukrainian youth and to provide hope to the Ukrainian nation. The organization was buffeted by history — repression, war, emigration, dispersement throughout the world — and finally found renewal in a free Ukraine. It was an amazing journey, truly a unique story.

Introduction to Ukraine by Gilad James, PhD Pdf

Introduction to Ukraine is a brief overview of the country situated in Eastern Europe, which gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev, and the official language is Ukrainian. The population of Ukraine is approximately 44 million, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world. Ukraine has a rich cultural and historical heritage, as well as a diverse landscape, including the Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea coastline. Ukraine is an important agricultural producer, particularly of wheat, corn, and potatoes. Additionally, Ukraine has a significant industrial sector, including steel production and aerospace engineering. The political situation in Ukraine has been unstable since the overthrow of former President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014, with the ongoing conflict with Russia over the annexation of Crimea and the ongoing fighting in eastern Ukraine between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists. Despite these challenges, Ukraine has made progress towards integration with the European Union, and in 2020, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans for major reforms in the country, including anti-corruption measures and judicial reform. With its rich history and promising future, Ukraine remains an important country and emerging democracy in Eastern Europe.

The Return of the Cold War by J. L. Black,Michael Johns Pdf

This book examines the crisis in Ukraine, tracing its development and analysing the factors which lie behind it. It discusses above all how the two sides have engaged in political posturing, accusations, escalating sanctions and further escalating threats, arguing that the ease with which both sides have reverted to a Cold War mentality demonstrates that the Cold War belief systems never really disappeared, and that the hopes raised in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union for a new era in East-West relations were misplaced. The book pays special attention to the often ignored origins of the crisis within Ukraine itself, and the permanent damage caused by the fact that Ukrainians are killing Ukrainians in the eastern parts of the country. It also assesses why Cold War belief systems have re-emerged so easily, and concludes by considering the likely long-term ramifications of the crisis, arguing that the deep-rooted lack of trust makes the possibility of compromise even harder than in the original Cold War.

Corporate Social Responsibility Across Europe by André Habisch,Jan Jonker,Martina Wegner,René Schmidpeter Pdf

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an increasingly important topic in our global society. Corporate Social Responsibility Across Europe is the first volume of its kind to bring together twenty-three national perspectives on this issue. Thirty-seven European researchers worked on the book, which provides a comprehensive and structured survey of CSR developments and progress at national levels. An overview and analysis is provided for each country. Topics addressed include business and societal mindsets in the different cultural settings, national drivers for the current development of CSR, and prospects for the individual countries in the future. Furthermore it contains three comprehensive pan-European analyses. The chapters also contain practical information and references to the Internet as well as relevant literature in order to support further research and stimulate business activities in this field. The result is a rather unique collection of essays on the topic of CSR across Europe.

Transnational Ukraine? by Timm Beichelt,Susann Worschech Pdf

The Euromaidan protests showed Ukraine to be a state between East and West European paths. Ukraine’s search for an identity and future is deeply rooted in historical fractures, which indicate its longstanding ties beyond its borders. In this volume, distinguished scholars provide empirical analysis and theoretical reflections on Ukraine’s transnational embeddedness, which surfaced with an unexpected intensity in the recent political conflict. The essays have subjects including the role of international media and of diaspora communities in Euromaidan’s aftermath, the transnational roots of memory and the search for collective identity, and transnational linkages of elites within Ukrainian political and economic regimes. The anthology demonstrates the theoretical and analytical value of the concept of transnationalism for studying the ambivalent processes of post-Soviet modernization.

Corruption in Ukraine by Oleg Bazaluk Pdf

Using the methodology of geophilosophy, this book expands the understanding of Ukraine as a limitrophe state, as a frontier between two world cultures, the East and the West. It explains the relationship between the totally corrupt Ukrainian political system and the geographic location of the country. Drawing from open source information, the book constructs psychological portraits of five presidents of Ukraine and various members of their inner-circle in order to show their role in the formation and consolidation of the corrupt mentality of Ukrainian authority. As shown here, such mentalities of Ukrainian rulers, and their Soviet nomenklatura past, have, to a large extent, determined the course of history for the entire country. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in the issues of geopolitics, geophilosophy, and national identity.
