United States Foreign Policy Perspectives for South Asia by Scott William Zurschmit Pdf

This paper argues that United States interests in South Asia will continue to grow in the coming decades. Prudent policies now can encourage peace and stability in the region while increasing our involvement and influence. International relationships and the U.S. role in the world will continue to change. Competition between China and the U.S. is likely to intensity as China realizes economic growth, and asserts itself more and more within and outside of Asia. The fundamental issue is whether the administration can overcome the propensity to simply 'react' to foreign affairs rather than trying to anticipate and shape them. This paper recommends policies that recognize the importance of farsightedness in foreign policy and argues that actions we take now in South Asia could certainly engender more effective pursuit of our interests in the long term.

The Dossier by IndraStra by Monish Tourangbam,Tridivesh Singh Maini,Sriparna Pathak Pdf

On August 21, 2017, United States' President Donald Trump provided the roadmap to America's next South Asia strategy, mainly centered on America‟s Afghanistan Policy. Given the United States, longtime involvement in the region, America‟s Afghanistan policy plays a keyrole in United States overall foreign policy. Given the primacy attached, Trump‟s speech reflected two very significant factors: First, there was a clear identification and condemnation of Pakistan as a significant actor contributing to terrorism. Secondly, there was greater confidence expressed in India‟s role in the region at large and Afghanistan in particular. Keeping this context, the present series attempts to articulate three key questions: 1. What does Trump's new South Asia policy hold for U.S., India, and China? 2. Is there a continuity/change in America's policy and what can be further expected? 3. What will be the larger implications of Trump's new South Asia policy, if any? To address the queries, the series is divided into three perspectives- American, Indian and Chinese. Reflecting on America's foreign policy under the Trump administration, Dr. Monish Tourangbam argues that the new U.S. strategy on Afghanistan is designed to avoid losing, rather than winning in Afghanistan. While arguing from an Indian perspective, Tridivesh Singh Maini suggests that while it is tough to predict how U.S. policy will pan out towards Afghanistan, one major shift in Trump's approach is that unlike previous U.S. administration's, he has not really drawn any red lines for India‟s role in Afghanistan. Drawing on the Chinese perspective, Dr. Sriparna Pathak argues that as China shares an "all-weather friendship" with Pakistan, public shaming of Pakistan for shielding terrorists is clearly not something that is acceptable to China. However, with respect to terrorism, China has its own woes emanating primarily from its Xinjiang province. Therefore, the American policy in South Asia, which in all probability will see greater American involvement in the region, will have to be carefully considered by the foreign policy mandarins in Beijing. United States and Pakistan in the 21st Century by Syed Tahseen Raza Pdf

This book historically maps and examines the evolving, contemporary geostrategic and geopolitical imperatives of the United States within Pakistan and the South Asian region, especially after September 11, 2001. It offers a detailed and theoretical account of the rapidly changing context of US foreign policy towards Pakistan after 2001. The history of the US-Pakistan relationship has been a complex and inscrutable mix of cooperation and conflict has turned even more challenging after 9/11. This book covers the latest developments and relevant themes from world politics as it discusses the impact of the unprecedented rise in religious extremism in Pakistan, stemming from the US War on Terror as well as Pakistan’s economic vulnerability and military dictatorship, India’s offer to support the US in its war in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s nuclear capability, and the US administration’s decision to end financial aid to Pakistan. The study highlights the fact that, from the receding of British influence in the region through the Cold War and post-Cold War phases to the post-9/11 period, US-South Asia policy has been informed by the theoretical paradigm of the grand strategy of primacy. This topical book will be useful to scholars and researchers of international relations, politics, political studies, strategic and defence studies, security and peace studies, foreign policy, area studies, and South Asian studies. It will also interest diplomats, politicians, policymakers, security experts, journalists, and think tanks interested in India, Pakistan, and the United States on issues of international politics, world affairs, and terrorism.

Enduring and Emerging Issues in South Asian Security by Šumit Ganguly,Dinshaw Mistry Pdf

Analyzing regional challenges and their implications for U.S. foreign policy This book is an impressive overview of security and governance issues in South Asia and their implications for U.S. foreign policy in the region. The focus is on major enduring issues that include India-Pakistan relations, India-China relations, conventional forces, and nuclear weapons. The book’s contributors also tackle a number of often underexplored issues, including democratic backsliding in India, authoritarian hardening in China, and the international ramifications of both. The impact of Pakistan’s political culture on democracy, and the insurgency in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province, along with examinations of the internal security challenges in Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Maldives provide lessons for other states on how to counterviolent extremism and insurgencies related to identity and marginalization. Anyone interested in South Asian security and U.S. policy toward the region will be rewarded with new insights on these topics, written by academics and analysts specializing in the issues. The chapter authors were close colleagues or advisees of long-time Brookings Institution senior fellow Stephen Philip Cohen. Cohen was the first American scholar to work on South Asian security studies. He largely defined the field, trained and mentored many of its leading analysts, and was himself its most experienced and insightful scholar-practitioner until his death in 2019. This book is dedicated to Cohen in recognition of his contributions to scholarship and policymaking on South Asia.
