Mobilizing Money by Caroline Fohlin Pdf

This book examines the origins of modern corporate finance systems during the rapid industrialization period leading up to World War I; leading to three sets of conclusions. First, modern financial systems are rooted in the past, are idiosyncratic to specific countries and are highly path-dependent. Therefore, to understand current financial institutions, we must take stock of the forces at play in the near and distant past. Second, financial institutions and markets do not create economic growth without significant first steps in industrial development and supporting institutions. Third, and most important from the modern policy standpoint, there is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution to financial system design and industrial development. Having specific types of financial institutions is far less important than developing a strong, stable and legally protected financial system with a rich diversity of institutions and vibrant markets that can adapt to changing needs.

The performances of a bank in terms of profitability, service quality and universal banking by Michael Nyarko-Baasi Pdf

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich BWL - Bank, Börse, Versicherung, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The banking scenario in Ghana has been changing at fast pace from being just the borrowers and lenders, traditionally, to more differentiated and customized product/service provider. The sector has moved from regulation to liberalization in the 1990s, and from planned to market economy. The Ghanaian banking has come a long way from being a sleepy business institution to a highly proactive and dynamic entity. This transformation has been largely brought about by the large dose of liberalization and economic reforms that allowed banks to explore new business opportunities rather than generating revenues from conventional streams (i.e. borrowing and lending). The competition heated up with the entry of private and foreign banks. Deregulation and globalization resulted in increased competition that refined the traditional way of doing business. The banks have realized the importance of a customer centric approach, brand building and IT enabled solutions. In the fierce battle for market share and mind share, the most potent weapon is a strong, well recognized and trusted brand name. Brands attract and convince people that they will get what is promised. Banking today has transformed into a technology intensive and customer friendly model with a focus on convenience. The companies have redoubled their efforts to woo the customers and establish themselves firmly in the market. It is no longer an option for a bank to provide good customer service, it is expected.

Unsettled Account by Richard S. Grossman Pdf

A sweeping look at the evolution of commercial banks over the past two centuries Commercial banks are among the oldest and most familiar financial institutions. When they work well, we hardly notice; when they do not, we rail against them. What are the historical forces that have shaped the modern banking system? In Unsettled Account, Richard Grossman takes the first truly comparative look at the development of commercial banking systems over the past two centuries in Western Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia. Grossman focuses on four major elements that have contributed to banking evolution: crises, bailouts, mergers, and regulations. He explores where banking crises come from and why certain banking systems are more resistant to crises than others, how governments and financial systems respond to crises, why merger movements suddenly take off, and what motivates governments to regulate banks. Grossman reveals that many of the same components underlying the history of banking evolution are at work today. The recent subprime mortgage crisis had its origins, like many earlier banking crises, in a boom-bust economic cycle. Grossman finds that important historical elements are also at play in modern bailouts, merger movements, and regulatory reforms. Unsettled Account is a fascinating and informative must-read for anyone who wants to understand how the modern commercial banking system came to be, where it is headed, and how its development will affect global economic growth.

Reforming Financial Systems by Gerard Caprio,Dimitri Vittas Pdf

This volume summarizes the key lessons of financial history for emerging market and developing economies, mostly drawn from when OECD economies themselves were industrializing and did not possess the checks, balances, and supervisory capabilities they have today. The topics include the role of central banks, debates on how to make banking secure and sound, the relative efficiency of universal banking (compared with the Anglo-American commercial banking model), and the role of savings banks, nonbanks, and securities markets in development.
