Unplugged€”15th Anniversary Edition by Paul McComas Pdf

Jimi Hendrix. Janis Joplin. Jim Morrison. And recently, Amy Winehouse. Each died at 27 as a result of drug abuse, despair, or both. Back when Kurt Cobain took his own life at that age, his mother lamented, €œI told him not to join that stupid club.€ Unplugged imagines a talented and tormented woman whose membership in the club is denied€”barely. Up-and-coming rocker Dayna Clay struggles to make it through the final night of a wildly successful concert tour. Tormented by an ever-deepening depression, the 27-year-old hands her guitar to a fan and beats a hasty retreat. She flies home to Chicago and attempts suicide €¦ but nature seemingly steps in to spare her. Still unsure whether her life is worth living, she forfeits her career and disappears, setting out incognito for parts unknown. Dayna winds up, quite by accident, in the South Dakota Badlands, whose inhabitants€”human and otherwise€”challenge and change her in striking ways. She develops a profound affinity for the jagged, dramatic, semi-stable Badlands formations, which she takes strength from climbing. She forms a bond with the bighorn sheep she finds living on this seemingly unlivable land. And she befriends Drake, a €œwise-acre€ but wise rancher and retired stuntman who himself has struggled with depression, and his mischievous daughter, Kayla€”with whom Dayna begins to fall in love. All the while, Dayna€TMs mysterious disappearance and continuing absence only serve to boost public interest in her€”and to fuel her now-skyrocketing record sales. Laboring to choose between her musical ambitions and the new life she has made, Dayna finds herself stranded, alone, in a far-flung corner of the wilderness she has come to know and love. Saved from suicide earlier by nature, she now may perish by the very same hand €¦. This expanded 15th-anniversary edition of the critically acclaimed novel contains sheet music for the dozen "Dayna Clay" songs that the author composed€”six of them in collaboration with creative partner Maya Kuper, who plays "Dayna" in their adapted live show "Unplugged: A Survivor's Story in Scenes & Songs."

The Acoustic Bubble by T. G. Leighton Pdf

The wide range of important applications concerning the acoustic interactions of bubbles necessitates a book of this form which, utilising analogy, description, and formulation, gives a 'physical feel' for the phenomena, whilst also providing thoroughly for mathematically adept readers. The first half of the book introduces and draws together acoustics, cavitation nucleation and associated fluid dynamics, to examine the free oscillations of bubbles and the resulting acoustic emissions. In the second half, the behaviour and consequences of bubbles in externally-applied acoustic fields is discussed in detail, including the cavitational aspects of erosion and bioeffects. Throughout the book topics drawn from a variety of disciplines, and include: . Bubble and cavitation detection . Bioeffects of clinical ultrasound . Oceanic bubble populations . Sonochemistry . Ultrasonic degassing . Weather sensing There is an extensive bibliography.

Soundtracked Books from the Acoustic Era to the Digital Age by Justin St. Clair Pdf

Offering both a short history and a theoretical framework, this book is the first extended study of the soundtracked book as a media form. A soundtracked book is a print or digital publication for which a recorded, musical complement has been produced. Early examples were primarily developed for the children's market, but by the middle of the twentieth century, ethnographers had begun producing book-and-record combinations that used print to contextualize musical artifacts. The last half-century has witnessed the rapid expansion of the adult market, including soundtracked novels from celebrated writers such as Ursula K. Le Guin, Kathy Acker, and Mark Z. Danielewski. While often dismissed as gimmicks, this volume argues that soundtracked books represent an interesting case study in media consumption. Unlike synchronous multimedia forms, the vast majority of soundtracked books require that audience activity be split between reading and listening, thus defining the user experience and often shaping the content of singing books as well. Mapping the form's material evolution, this book charts a previously unconsidered pathway through more than a century of recording formats and packaging strategies, emphasizing the synergies and symbioses that characterize the marriage of sound and print. As such, it will be of value to scholars and postgraduate students working in media studies, literary studies, and sound studies.

Acoustic Jurisprudence by James E K Parker Pdf

Between September 2006 and December 2008, Simon Bikindi stood trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, accused of inciting genocide with his songs. In the early 1990s, Bikindi had been one of Rwanda's most well-known and popular figures - the country's minister for culture and its most famous and respected singer. But by the end of 1994, his songs had quite literally soundtracked a genocide. Acoustic Jurisprudence is the first detailed study of the trial that followed. It is also the first work of contemporary legal scholarship to address the many relations between law and sound, which are of much broader importance but which this trial very conspicuously raises. One half of the book addresses the Tribunal's 'sonic imagination'. How did the Tribunal conceive of Bikindi's songs for the purposes of judgment? How did it understand the role of radio and other media in their transmission? And with what consequences for Bikindi? The other half of the book is addressed to how such concerns played out in court. Bikindi's was a 'musical trial', as one judge pithily observed. Audio and audio-visual recordings of his songs were played regularly throughout. Witnesses, including Bikindi himself, frequently sang, both of their own accord and at the request of the Tribunal. Indeed, Bikindi even sang his final statement. All the while, judges, barristers, and witnesses alike spoke into microphones and listened through headphones. As a result, the Bikindi case offers an ideal opportunity to explore what this book calls the 'judicial soundscape'. Through the lens of the Bikindi trial, the book's most important innovation is to open up the field of sound to jurisprudential inquiry. Ultimately, it is an argument for a specifically acoustic jurisprudence.

IUTAM Symposium on Recent Advances of Acoustic Waves in Solids by Tsung-Tsong Wu,Chien-Ching Ma Pdf

Rapid growth of the mobile communication market has triggered extensive research on the bulk as well as surface acoustic wave devices in the last decade. Quite a few important results on the modeling and simulation of Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator (FBAR) and Layered SAW devices were reported recently. The other recent advance of acoustic waves in solids is the so-called phononic crystals or phononic band-gap materials. Analogous to the band-gap of light in photonic crystals, acoustic waves in periodic elastic structures also exhibit band-gap. Important applications of phononic band gap materials can potentially be found with creating a vibration free environment in microstructures, and design of advanced acoustic frequency filter, etc. In addition to the wave electronics and phononic crystals, to facilitate the emerging needs in the quantitative nondestructive evaluation of materials, waves in anisotropic solids and/or electro-, magneto- interaction problems also regained much attention recently. Topics treated include: Waves in piezoelectric crystals; Simulation of advanced BAW and SAW devices; Analysis of band gaps in phononic structures; Experimental investigation of phononic structures; Waves in multilayered media;Waves in anisotropic solids and/or electro-, magneto- interaction problems.

Gauge Invariance Approach to Acoustic Fields by Woon Siong Gan Pdf

This book highlights the symmetry properties of acoustic fields and describes the gauge invariance approach, which can be used to reveal those properties. Symmetry is the key theoretical framework of metamaterials, as has been demonstrated by the successful fabrication of acoustical metamaterials. The book first provides the necessary theoretical background, which includes the covariant derivative, the vector potential, and invariance in coordinate transformation. This is followed by descriptions of global gauge invariance (isotropy), and of local gauge invariance (anisotropy). Sections on time reversal symmetry, reflection invariance, and invariance of finite amplitude waves round out the coverage.
