His parents were Robert Fiske and Laura Amelia Tressel Griggs. His father was a widely known professor of botany and a leading ecologist and environmental conservationist at a time when these viewpoints were less familiar than they are today. David was an undergraduate at Ohio State University in 1930 when he participated in a National Geographic Society expedition, led by his father, to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. This Alaskan experience and the encouragement he received from a gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Professor Edmund M. Spieker, led him to choose for his life work the application of physics to the problems of the earth. After a year of graduate studies in geology at Ohio State, David moved on in 1933 to Harvard, where a new progTam of high-pressure studies devoted to geophysical problems had just been initiated under the inspired guidance of Percy W. How was the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), which at its inception in 1851 had fewer than a hundred members and only one part-time employee, able to flourish to become, around the turn of the twenty-first century, a modern, professional institute with 1,800 members with a staff of more than fifty employees. The Institute was founded with support from the highest political and official circles to gather scholarly information about the Dutch colonies in the East and West, not least to undergird colonial policy. KITLV played an important role in this, backed by the Ministry of Colonies and the business world. The Japanese occupation and decolonization led to a difficult process of adjustment for KITLV, which was concluded successfully. This 1980 monograph develops from first principles the description of finite deformations of solids under stress and the forces acting, and also the expression of internal forces in terms of stress tensors. The important feature of the book is that elastic properties are discussed and developed consistently from classical thermodynamics.
