Computerized Gait Analysis in the Rehabilitation of Children with Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida by Jo-Anne Tomie,Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research,Hailey, David Pdf

The Glenrose Hospital, Edmonton is considering routine clinical use of computerized gait analysis techniques in the management of children with cerebral palsy or spina bifida who have significant walking disorders. About 100 children per year could be examined to assist with decisions on their treatment. Evidence of clinical benefit from use of modern gait analysis techniques is sparse. These technologies seem helpful in detecting within-subject gait changes, and between-subject gait differences. However, available evidence is insufficient to draw conclusions about the effects of computerized gait analysis on treatment outcomes. Cost per examination with a facility of the sort proposed by the hospital might be of order of $1,800 - $2,200. Cost per patient would depend on the extent of follow-up gait analysis after treatment. On the basis of information available for this report, computerized gait analysis is a potentially useful technology in the clinical management of persons with walking disabilities, but its efficacy is not established. It is suggested that, if computerized gait analysys is adopted for routine clinical use by the Glenrose hospital, it should be regarded as a developing technology and its application linked to systematic collection and assessment of patient outcomes and cost data under well-defined protocols.

The Identification and Treatment of Gait Problems in Cerebral Palsy by James R. Gage,Michael H. Schwartz,Steven E. Koop,Tom F. Novacheck Pdf

The only book to deal specifically with the treatment of gait problems in cerebral palsy, this comprehensive, multi-disciplinary volume will be invaluable for all those working in the field of cerebral palsy and gait (neurologists, therapists, physiatrists, orthopaedic and neurosurgeons, and bioengineers). The book is divided into two parts. The first is designed to help the reader evaluate and understand a child with cerebral palsy. It deals with neurological control, musculoskeletal growth, and normal gait, as well as cerebral injury, growth deformities and gait pathology in children with cerebral palsy. The second section is a comprehensive overview of management. It emphasizes the most fundamental concept of treatment: manage the child's neurologic dysfunction first and then address the skeletal and muscular consequences of that dysfunction. The book has been thoroughly updated since the previous edition, with a greater focus on treatment and several entirely new topics covered, including chapters on the operative treatment of orthopaedic deformities. Forensic Gait Analysis by Ivan Birch,Michael Nirenberg,Wesley Vernon,Maria Birch Pdf

Gait analysis is the systematic study of human walking, using the eye and brain of experienced observers, augmented by instrumentation for measuring body movements, body mechanics, and the activity of the muscles. Since Aristotle’s work on gait analysis more than 2000 years ago, it has become an established clinical science used extensively in the healthcare and rehabilitation fields for diagnosis and treatment. Forensic Gait Analysis details the more recent, and rapidly developing, use of gait analysis in the forensic sciences. The book considers the use of observational gait analysis, based on video recordings, to assist in the process of identification or exclusion. With the increase in use of CCTV and surveillance systems over the last 20 to 30 years, there has been a steady and rapid increase in the use of gait as evidence. Currently, gait analysis is widely used in the UK in criminal investigations, with increasing awareness of its potential use in the US, Europe, and globally. The book details the history of the science, current practices, and of the emergent application to establish best-practice standards that conform to those of other forensic science disciplines. Engagement with the Forensic Science Regulator, and the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences in the UK, and the International Association for Identification has helped to ensure and enhance the quality assurance of forensic gait analysis. However, there remains a fundamental lack of standardized training and methodology for use in evidentiary and investigative casework. This book fills that void, serving as one of the first to describe the current state of practice, capabilities and limitations, and to outline methods, standards of practice and expectations of the gait analyst as a forensic practitioner. Forensic Gait Analysis reflects current research and forensic practice and will serve as a state-of-the-art guide to the use of gait analysis in the forensic context—for both education and training purposes. It will be a welcome addition to the libraries of professionals in the areas of podiatry, gait analysis, forensic video analysis, law enforcement, and legal practice.

It gives a concise description of clinical gait analysis, especially gait abnormality detection problems and therapeutic interventions using inexpensive devices. A brief demonstration on validation testing of these devices for its clinical applicability is also presented. Content coverage also includes step-by-step processing of the data acquired from these devices. Future perspectives of low-cost clinical gait assessment systems are explored. This book bridges the gap between engineering and biomedical fields as it diagnoses and monitors neuro-musculoskeletal abnormalities using the latest technologies. The authors discuss how early detection technology allows us to take precautionary measures, in order to delay the degeneration process, through development of a clinical gait analysis tool. One unique feature of this book is that it pays significant attention to the challenges of conducting gait analysis in developing countries with limited resources. This reference will guide you through setting up a low-cost gait analysis lab. It explores the relationship between vision-based pathological gait detection, the design of tools for gait diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. Provides a concise tutorial on affordable clinical gait analysis Analyses clinical validation of low-cost sensors for gait assessment Documents recent and state-of-the-art low-cost gait abnormality detection systems and therapeutic intervention procedures

Wearable Sensors in the Evaluation of Gait and Balance in Neurological Disorders by Antonio Suppa,Fernanda Irrera,Joan Cabestany Pdf

The aging population and the increased prevalence of neurological diseases have raised the issue of gait and balance disorders as a major public concern worldwide. Indeed, gait and balance disorders are responsible for a high healthcare and economic burden on society, thus, requiring new solutions to prevent harmful consequences. Recently, wearable sensors have provided new challenges and opportunities to address this issue through innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Accordingly, the book “Wearable Sensors in the Evaluation of Gait and Balance in Neurological Disorders” collects the most up-to-date information about the objective evaluation of gait and balance disorders, by means of wearable biosensors, in patients with various types of neurological diseases, including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and cerebellar ataxia. By adopting wearable technologies, the sixteen original research articles and reviews included in this book offer an updated overview of the most recent approaches for the objective evaluation of gait and balance disorders.
