Encounters of the USO Kind: A Nautical Nightmare by Drac Von Stoller Pdf

The USS Birmingham cut through the waters of the vast Pacific Ocean, its sleek form slicing through the waves with precision. The crew on board was on a routine exercise, the day had been uneventful so far. But little did they know, they were about to encounter something beyond their wildest nightmares. Captain Marcus Reynolds stood on the deck, his weathered face a testament to years of service. He scanned the horizon with his steely gray eyes, a sense of duty and determination etched into every line on his face. The salty breeze ruffled his graying hair as he gripped the railing tightly, his knuckles whitening under the pressure. "Another day, another drill," he muttered to himself, his voice a low growl that was almost lost in the gentle hum of the ship's engines. His first mate, Lieutenant Sarah Thompson, approached him with a clipboard in hand. Her auburn hair was tied back in a tight bun, her green eyes sharp and alert. "Captain, all systems are functioning normally. We're on schedule for the submarine detection exercise." Reynolds nodded, his gaze still fixed on the horizon. "Good. Let's hope for some action today. These drills can get monotonous." Little did he know, his wish for action was about to be granted in the most horrific way possible. Suddenly, a ripple in the water caught his attention. It started as a small disturbance but soon grew into a massive wave that sent shivers down his spine. The water churned and frothed as if some monstrous leviathan was stirring beneath the surface. "Captain, what the hell is that?" Ensign Jack Foster shouted, his young face contorted with a mixture of awe and fear. He pointed towards a strange object emerging from the depths of the ocean. It was metallic, with a silvery sheen that glinted in the sunlight. As it rose higher, it revealed a sleek, rounded shape that seemed to defy all laws of physics. "All hands on deck!" Reynolds roared, his voice echoing across the ship. "Battle stations, now!" The crew scrambled into action, the once peaceful deck transforming into a hive of frantic activity. Weapons were manned, sensors whirred to life, and a palpable tension filled the air. "Sir, our sensors can't get a read on it," Lieutenant Thompson reported her voice tight with tension. "It's like it's cloaked or... or made of something our technology can't comprehend." As the object continued to rise, it revealed its full form a craft unlike anything they had ever seen. It was the size of a small submarine, but its design was otherworldly. There were no visible propellers, no conning tower, just a smooth, egg-shaped hull that glistened like liquid mercury. "Prepare to fire," Captain Reynolds ordered, his voice cold and determined. The USS Birmingham readied its weapons, aiming at the unidentified submerged object (USO) that now hung in the water before them. "Sir, look!" Ensign Foster cried out, pointing towards the windows of the USO. Through the glass, they could see shadowy figures moving inside, their forms twisted and alien. They moved with an eerie fluidity, their limbs bending in ways that no human anatomy could allow.

Good Girls, Good Food, Good Fun by Meghan K. Winchell Pdf

Throughout World War II, when Saturday nights came around, servicemen and hostesses happily forgot the war for a little while as they danced together in USO clubs, which served as havens of stability in a time of social, moral, and geographic upheaval. Meghan Winchell demonstrates that in addition to boosting soldier morale, the USO acted as an architect of the gender roles and sexual codes that shaped the "greatest generation." Combining archival research with extensive firsthand accounts from among the hundreds of thousands of female USO volunteers, Winchell shows how the organization both reflected and shaped 1940s American society at large. The USO had hoped that respectable feminine companionship would limit venereal disease rates in the military. To that end, Winchell explains, USO recruitment practices characterized white middle-class women as sexually respectable, thus implying that the sexual behavior of working-class women and women of color was suspicious. In response, women of color sought to redefine the USO's definition of beauty and respectability, challenging the USO's vision of a home front that was free of racial, gender, and sexual conflict. Despite clashes over class and racial ideologies of sex and respectability, Winchell finds that most hostesses benefited from the USO's chaste image. In exploring the USO's treatment of female volunteers, Winchell not only brings the hostesses' stories to light but also supplies a crucial missing piece for understanding the complex ways in which the war both destabilized and restored certain versions of social order.

Mathematical Tools for Data Mining by Dan A. Simovici,Chaabane Djeraba Pdf

This volume was born from the experience of the authors as researchers and educators, whichsuggeststhatmanystudentsofdataminingarehandicapped in their research by the lack of a formal, systematic education in its mat- matics. The data mining literature contains many excellent titles that address the needs of users with a variety of interests ranging from decision making to p- tern investigation in biological data. However, these books do not deal with the mathematical tools that are currently needed by data mining researchers and doctoral students. We felt it timely to produce a book that integrates the mathematics of data mining with its applications. We emphasize that this book is about mathematical tools for data mining and not about data mining itself; despite this, a substantial amount of applications of mathematical c- cepts in data mining are presented. The book is intended as a reference for the working data miner. In our opinion, three areas of mathematics are vital for data mining: set theory, includingpartially orderedsetsandcombinatorics;linear algebra, with its many applications in principal component analysis and neural networks; and probability theory, which plays a foundational role in statistics, machine learning and data mining. Thisvolumeisdedicatedtothestudyofset-theoreticalfoundationsofdata mining. Two further volumes are contemplated that will cover linear algebra and probability theory. The ?rst part of this book, dedicated to set theory, begins with a study of functionsandrelations.Applicationsofthesefundamentalconceptstosuch- sues as equivalences and partitions are discussed. Also, we prepare the ground for the following volumes by discussing indicator functions, ?elds and?-?elds, and other concepts.

Patton's Third Army at War by George Forty Pdf

The story of Gen. George S. Patton’s magnificent Third Army as it advanced across Nazi-occupied Europe and into Hitler’s redoubt. Includes photos. As America’s own answer to the Blitzkrieg, Third Army’s actions from the Normandy coast across France and Germany to Austria gave a new dimension to the term “fluid warfare.” They only needed one general order—to seek out the enemy, trap, and destroy them. This they did, relentlessly overcoming every obstacle thrown in their way. Third Army’s story is one of teamwork, of armor, infantry, and aircraft working together with a perfection that amazed even the Germans, who’d always considered themselves the masters of the mobile offensive. Though Third Army is often remembered for its tank spearheads, like the 4th Armored Division, these pages also give credit to the brave infantry divisions which butted their heads against fortresses such as Metz with ultimate success. It is also the story of a triumph of administration as thousands of trucks carried forward the vital supplies to keep the army on the move and fighting. When a German counteroffensive nearly burst through the US lines in the Ardennes, it was Patton’s Third Army that turned on its heel and immediately drove in the “Bulge,” ending Hitler’s last great hope for success in the west. Afterward nothing could stop it as it crossed the Rhine and overran the Reich. Much of Third Army’s greatness, driving force, and will to win, was owed to one man—Gen. George Smith Patton Jr.—and a significant part of this book is devoted to him alone. In these pages, a renowned military historian gives a vivid impression in words and pictures of what it was like to live and fight with Patton’s men. Full of eyewitness accounts, photographs, and maps, it relates the full story of how America’s most dynamic fighting formation led the Allied effort against the Nazis’ seemingly invincible European empire.
