Utopia Revisited by John B. Mooney Pdf

Thomas More wrote Utopia in 1515. In it he and his friend Peter Giles have a conversation with Raphael about the island Utopia. Raphael was a sailor with Amerigo Vespucci on a voyage to the new world where they visited Utopia. Raphael told of the geography and culture of the unique country. Utopia revisited is a rewriting of the nearly 500-year-old story in modern and future terms. Raphael is now an astronaut from Utopia, the third planet of the Alpha Centuri the sun's nearest neighbor. Utopia is about 500 years ahead of earth in its cultural evolution. The government is a republic without national borders. The legal system is designed to limit the effects of buroacracy by limiting elected and appointed to a single six-year term. Tribunals have replaced lawyers and juries. The government provides full employment if private sector jobs are not available as jobs are less expensive than prisons or welfare. The Appendixes present the constitution of Utopia, and an utopianization of the constitution of the state of Wyoming. The latter is included as a demonstration of the practicality of some of the utopian concepts applied to an earthly political system.

The Reception of Blake in the Orient by Steve Clark,Masashi Suzuki Pdf

This volume brings together research from international scholars focusing attention on the longevity and complexity of Blake`s reception in Japan and elsewhere in the East. It is designed as not only a celebration of his art and poetry in new and unexpected contexts but also to contest the intensely nationalistic and parochial Englishness of his work, and in broader terms, the inevitable passivity with which Romanticism (and other Western intellectual movements) have been received in the Orient.

Geographies of an Imperial Power by Jeremy Black Pdf

From explorers tracing rivers to navigators hunting for longitude, spatial awareness and the need for empirical understanding were linked to British strategy in the 1700s. This strategy, in turn, aided in the assertion of British power and authority on a global scale. In this sweeping consideration of Britain in the 18th century, Jeremy Black explores the interconnected roles of power and geography in the creation of a global empire. Geography was at the heart of Britain’s expansion into India, its response to uprisings in Scotland and America, and its revolutionary development of railways. Geographical dominance was reinforced as newspapers stoked the fires of xenophobia and defined the limits of cosmopolitan Europe as compared to the "barbarism" beyond. Geography provided a system of analysis and classification which gave Britain political, cultural, and scientific sovereignty. Black considers geographical knowledge not just as a tool for creating a shared cultural identity but also as a key mechanism in the formation of one of the most powerful and far-reaching empires the world has ever known.
