Lost in Uttar Pradesh by Evan S. Connell Pdf

Although he may be best known for his novels Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge, or perhaps for his brilliant biography of Custer, Son of the Morning Star, Evan S. Connell is an undisputed master of the short story. His restraint, concision, and perfect pitch lend themselves beautifully to the form, and he intuitively senses when to explain and when to let silence stand in speech's stead. Lost in Uttar Pradesh collects new work by Connell along with some of his earlier masterpieces. Memorable characters like the corpulent Mr. Bemis, Katia and her lion, and a wanderer back from Spain ring true not because their stories are filled with monumental events but because they center around seemingly insignificant events that somehow remain in the mind. Through Connell's mastery, the most trivial happening, the voice that speaks only once, resonates far beyond the final page.

Exodus of Men from Rural Uttar Pradesh by Ruchi Singh Pdf

Rural to urban migration has become an integral character of developing economies. Sources of livelihoods and earnings in rural households are no longer confined to agriculture and are increasingly being diversified through migration of family one or more member within and beyond national boundaries. Migration is not a new phenomenon in India rather country has a long history of migration, which has played an important role in its social history, development and growth and culture. This study of the nature and determinants of male out-migration from rural UP focusing on six villages in Jaunpur District started with an observation that despite high male out-migration from rural UP, little attention has been given to understand the dynamics and process of migration in rural UP. Although migration has become the most opted strategy of diversification of livelihoods for rural households in UP, literature on it remains scarce. Literature on migration and its link with social groups are also scarce for UP. The work started with the proposition that migration is a risk and income diversification strategy (NELM approach) by rural households in UP. Along with linkages between migration and social group there is also a dearth of literature on migration as a risk diversification strategy in UP. Using primary data from the case study district of Jaunpur in eastern UP, India, firstly, a survey in the origin was carried out, and then migrants from the same households were tracked and interviewed at their respective destinations. Contents Chapter 1. Introduction. Chapter 2. Research Methodology, Database and Area of the Study Chapter 3. Context and Drivers of Male Out-Migration from Uttar Pradesh: State Level Insights from NSSO Data Chapter 5. Is Migration Risk and Income Diversification (NELM) Strategy for Rural Households in Uttar Pradesh? Chapter 6. Migrants Perspectives and Experiences at Destination Chapter 7. Conclusion References

Social and Political Change in Uttar Pradesh by Roger Jeffery,Jens Lerche Pdf

The state of Uttar Pradesh -- India's most populous, but also one of its poorest -- is in crisis, lagging behind the rest of the country in terms of social development, economic growth, and women's empowerment, with inefficient and ineffective democratic institutions. In this timely book, established scholars and new voices from Europe reflect on aspects of the perilous condition of UP, addressing a range of issues, all drawing on intensive and extended fieldwork. What used to be UP's strength has turned into its weakness. Its position in India as the quintessential Indian state -- is unique, but no specific UP-identity has been developed. In papers discussing people's own perceptions of core social and political issues, local ideas of what is needed for development are discussed. Gender relations are a central concern of two papers, one on customary marriage and divorce practices at village level and the other on changing notions of education for girls and the images of the UP plains held by those in the hills. Other papers deal with the social bases and ideology of the separatist movement in the UP hills; with Dalits and farmers, and the political organisations aiming to represent their interests; with farmers, and how far the BKU is articulating their demands in western UP; and with how Jats in western UP are changing the way they maintain their dominance. The two final papers discuss how modern mass media -- TV and newspapers -- are shaping developments in UP. The book -- a major advance in our understanding of contemporary patterns of social change in UP -- will be essential reading for concerned citizens, students and academics alike.
