Value Chain Analysis of Local Rice (Oryza glaberrima) Production in Ebonyi State, Nigeria by Udeme Usanga Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: Conference Research Paper, National Open University of Nigeria (National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike), course: Agricultural Production Economics, language: English, abstract: This study examined local rice production and value addition in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Data were purposely collected from Ishiagu and Abakiliki from 144 rice value chain actors. It was found that wholesalers enjoy the largest share of the marketing margin, where at cross boundary markets, the wholesalers’ profit goes as higher as N76.0/kg as compared to N39.5/kg, received by local farmers, showing unequal distribution of benefits among the local rice value chain actors, where reward to traders is extremely higher than that of producers. The profitability analysis shows a net return of N4, 085 with a BCR of 1.14:1, meaning that local rice production is viable and profitable in the area. Two separate multiple regression analysis, using the double-log regression as the lead equation for the producers (farmers) gave R2 of 0.923 and F-Ratio of 51.031, being an indication that 92.3% of the variation in the rice output was explained by the explanatory variables, while 7.70% was accounted-for due to error term (ei) and uncaptured variables. For the secondary value chain actors (transporters, millers, wholesalers and retailers), the exponential function gave R2 of 0.782 and F-Ratio of 38.104, being an indication that 78.2% of the variation in the rice output was explained by the explanatory variables (socio-economic characteristics) while 21.8% was accounted-for due to stochastic error term (ei) and uncaptured variables. The study recommended improvement of effectiveness in cooperative membership to attract finance for rice production, inputs and value addition, purchase of machines for processing and packaging, transportation and marketing. Furthermore, lack of adequate agricultural infrastructure and market information systems was observed to be critical areas of policy concerns. Policies for microcredit institutions on provision of credits to local rice farmers are also recommended to improve rice productivity by capacitating smallholder farmers to use modern agricultural machinery.

Profit and profitability of Rice Production in Ndop Plain, Cameroon by Fuh George Cheo,Sama Joseph Nkwain Pdf

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 3.6/5, , language: English, abstract: This study has identified the main actors in the Ndop rice value chain in Cameroon, beginning with the cost of production at the farmer’s level, then the costs or added values at each stage identified along the value chain. It has been shown that farmers incur a production cost of 114,6 Francs per kilogram of paddy rice, which they sell at 120 Francs to millers. In the process along the value chain it is shown that the millers make the highest profit. UNDVA gets the lion’s share (154909,96 Francs) followed by the private miller (105504 Francs) per hectare, while the farmers gets only 27,200 Francs. Further analyses show that the farmer could improve his profit margin by 78,304 Francs if he mills his rice with the private millers and sells to a wholesaler and by 127,709 Francs a if he mills with UNDVA, if he was not financially handicapped and /or restrained from pursuing such an option. Also, the farmer’s profit situation is sometimes worsened by local rice collectors when because of financial constraints he is lured into unfair production pre-financing deals involving taking loans from middlemen to repay in kind at harvest time and at giveaway rates. On other hand, millers further increase their lion’s share of the profit from the sales of rice brand, a byproduct of milled rice, which is never handed to the farmer. Value chain analysis revealed the following weaknesses along the chain: the activities of the actors are as yet uncoordinated; income distribution is unequal and disfavors the farmers; returns to the farmers, who the principal actors, are discouragingly very low and due mainly to high cost of the labour intensive activities, unattractively low producer price(less than a third of the consumer price, and to financial constraints that hinder him from extending his production activities to include milling. Generally in the Cameroon rice market, Ndop rice is less competitive when faced with competition from imported rice, especially that imported from India and Vietnam whose higher quality attracts consumers to the extent that rice dealers prefer dealing with imported rice despite its higher cost, because the consumer market prices are high enough to give them profits higher by up to 1250 francs per 50 kilogram bag when compared to Ndop rice deals.

Geology and Economic Potential of Barite Mineralization on Gombe Inlier, Gombe State, Nigeria by Ahmed Isah Haruna Pdf

Research Paper from the year 2007 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: A, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, course: Applied Geology - Economic Geology/ Mineral Exploration, language: English, abstract: Barite (BaSO4) mineralization occurs within Pan African fracture systems in the Gombe inlier. Gombe Inlier is a Basement dome within the Gongola Basin (Upper Benue trough in Nigeria) which exposes most of the stratigraphic sequence (Bima Sandstone, Yolde Formation, Pindiga Formation and Gombe Sandstone). Fieldwork was conducted from March 23rd – 29th 2007, 20 minerals and rock samples were taken from the veins and host rocks, and then Geochemical, petrographic and structural analysis were conducted to ascertain the quality of barite, associated minerals, nature of host rock and also the type of chemical as well as structural barriers for the mineralization. The results shows that the principal planar planes hosting mineralizations were found to trend mostly in NE – WSW direction which conforms well in smaller scale with the trend of strike slip faults that faulted the inlier and on a larger scale conforms with the general trend of the Benue trough. The fractures are therefore probably subordinate to the general structural trend of the Benue trough. The main associated mineralization was inferred to be anhydrite (CaSO4) which is also a sulphate like barite. This suggest competition for SO32+ by Ba2+ and Ca2+ but the deeper fractures host barite because Ba2+ originate from mantle and brought up by hydrothermal fluid through fractures while Ca2+ could be a dissolved ion in sea water. The quality of the barite in some veins is well over 70% BaSO4 which is economically viable. Part of barite in some veins were leached and recrystallized into spindle crystals by later hydrothermal fluid with little effect on its chemistry. The petrographic studies also revealed the purity of some barite veins and also indicated the presence of other associated minerals and also indicates the nature of the silica chemical barrier for the sulphate mineralizations.

Film Production and Tourism Development in Nigeria. An Analysis of the Impact of Media on Tourism by Chinwe Chimezie Uwaoma Pdf

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 4.5, University of Ibadan, language: English, abstract: This paper is about how the media in Nigeria can initiate a sense of departure to tourism sites through its movies/television programs. A major trend in tourism, this decade is the move away from the appreciation of the traditional elements of the practice-sight scenery, good weather and acquisition of luxury items –towards urban heritage –based, short –break, tourism emphasizing culture as products. The notion of departure or exit is in part initiated and constructed by a multiplicity of media, most importantly the film and television industries and packaged as advertisement. The entrepreneurs or developers of the media even in developing countries, perceive the countryside, specifically, not as a natural living environment of limited socio-economic value, but as a commodity that can be packaged and sold for a price to viewers. That is, the rural localities, locally and internationally have become popular contexts for a myriad of television serials or the setting of films and videos. The images the media foster are beamed into the homes of many people and succeed in constraining the audience to enjoy an experience of the great outdoors in the comfort and safety of the idyllic places. In other words, the viewers may be moved to go in search of the locations used anticipating the findings of what they saw on their screens and may be encountering the very role players in the presentations. Films and movies may and actually in certain circumstances serve to generate interests in locations used, especially when the setting involves attractive countryside and captivating cultural practices of the people. The films, therefore, have become of great interest to the public because they package specific cultures of the idyllic lifestyles and promote market values that can generate huge incomes.

Indigenous Peoples' Food Systems by Harriet V. Kuhnlein,Bill Erasmus,Dina Spigelski Pdf

Today, globalisation and homogenisation have replaced local food cultures. The 12 case studies presented in this book show the wealth of knowledge in indigenous communities in diverse ecosystems, the richness of their food resources, the inherent strengths of the local traditional food systems, how people think about and use these foods, the influx of industrial and purchased food, and the circumstances of the nutrition transition in indigenous communities. The unique styles of conceptualising food systems and writing about them were preserved. Photographs and tables accompany each chapter.

Agronomic Crops by Mirza Hasanuzzaman Pdf

Agronomic crops have been a source of foods, beverages, fodders, fuels, medicines and industrial raw materials since the dawn of human civilization. Over time, these crops have come to be cultivated using scientific methods instead of traditional methods. However, in the era of climate change, agronomic crops are increasingly subjected to various environmental stresses, which results in substantial yield loss. To meet the food demands of the ever-increasing global population, new technologies and management practices are being adopted to boost yield and maintain productivity under both normal and adverse conditions. To promote the sustainable production of agronomic crops, scientists are currently exploring a range of approaches, which include varietal development, soil management, nutrient and water management, pest management etc. Researchers have also made remarkable progress in developing stress tolerance in crops through various approaches. However, finding solutions to meet the growing food demands remains a challenge. Although there are several research publications on the above-mentioned problems, there are virtually no comprehensive books addressing all of the recent topics. Accordingly, this book, which covers all aspects of production technologies, management practices, and stress tolerance of agronomic crops in a single source, offers a highly topical guide.

The Nigerian Rice Economy by Kwabena Gyimah-Brempong,Michael Johnson,Hiroyuki Takeshima Pdf

In The Nigerian Rice Economy the authors assess three options for reducing this dependency - tariffs and other trade policies; increasing domestic rice production; and improving post-harvest rice processing and marketing - and identify improved production and post-harvest activities as the most promising. These options however, will require substantially increased public investments in a variety of areas, including research and development, basic infrastructure (for example, irrigation, feeder roads, and electricity), and rice milling technologies.
