Components, classification, characteristics and applications of varnishes are discussed in the book. It is written in comprehensive manner. Wood is valuable for structural purpose and decorative purpose also. Wood has plant origin. The wood used for building construction is known as Timber. Forests produce a huge quantity of timber. Cellulose, Hemicellulose, Lignin and other substances are the constituents of wood. Aliphatic compounds, phenols, fats, waxes, terpenes, terpenoids etc. are found in woods. Stilbenes, Tannins, Flavonoids and Lignanas are phenolic compounds available in woods. Coating of varnishes is useful for wood, metal and their derivatives. It is also useful for plastic and masonry. Varnish is a formulation of resinous matter, as copal or lac, dissolved in oil or in alcohol or any other liquid. When a varnish is applied to the surface of wood or metal, it dries and leaves a hard and generally transparent coating. It is a shiny coating which is applied on a floor or furniture. It dries clear and luminous. It gives a hard, lustrous and transparent finish to the surface. It gives furniture, wooden materials, artwork and other objects a glossy look. It also protects the surface. Usually varnish is prepared from resin, solvent and oil. The Medieval Latin root word for varnish is ‘vernix’ that means odorous or fragrant resin. Some varnishes harden immediately as the solvent evaporates. So, it produces a film. The other varnishes harden slowly over a period of time. The process of hardening involves oxidation and polymerization. Shellac, Resin and Lacquer dry immediately. Acrylic and some of the water based varnishes evaporate the water or solvent and dry over a period of time. It is also known as curing process of varnishes. Oil based, polyurethane and epoxy varnishes also dry slowly to hard finish. Generally, the factors like following affect curing process of a varnish: - Temperature - Humidity of atmosphere - Components of varnish. Wood kept outside is normally exposed to big variations of temperatures and weather. It is also exposed to Ultra Violet(UV) rays in the atmosphere. Changes in humidity also affect the wood which results in contraction or expansion of wood. These all factors damage the wood or wooden articles. Hence, varnishes can be used to protect wood and wooden articles.

A new history of the techniques, materials, and aesthetic ambitions that gave rise to the radiant verisimilitude of Jan van Eyck’s oil paintings on panel. Panel painters in both the middle ages and the fifteenth century created works that evoke the luster of precious stones, the sheen of polished gold and silver, and the colorful radiance of stained glass. Yet their approaches to rendering these materials were markedly different. Marjolijn Bol explores some of the reasons behind this radical transformation by telling the history of the two oil painting techniques used to depict everything that glistens and glows—varnish and glaze. For more than a century after his death, the fifteenth-century painter Jan van Eyck was widely credited with inventing varnish and oil paint, on account of his unique visual realism. Once this was revealed to be a myth, the verisimilitude of his work was attributed instead to a new translucent painting technique: the glaze. Today, most theories about how Van Eyck achieved this realism revolve around the idea that he was the first to discover or refine the glazing technique. Bol, however, argues that, rather than being a fifteenth-century refinement, varnishing and glazing began centuries before. Drawing from an extensive body of recipes, Bol pieces together how varnishes and glazes were first developed as part of the medieval art of material mimesis. Artisans embellished metalwork and wood with varnishes and glazes to imitate gold and gems; infused rock crystal with oil, resin, and colorants to imitate more precious minerals; and oiled parchment to transform it into the appearance of green glass. Likewise, medieval panel painters used varnishes and glazes to create the look of enamel, silk, and more. The explorations of materials and their optical properties by these artists stimulated natural philosophers to come up with theories about transparent and translucent materials produced by the earth. Varnish is a clear finish best suited for accenting wood grain. Technically, all resin and solvent mixes are varnishes. Most resin or gum varnishes consist of a natural, plant or insect derived substance dissolved in a solvent. The two main types of natural varnishes are spirit varnish (alcohol-based) and turpentine or petroleum based varnish. Spirit varnishes made with alcohol are conveniently prepared and on account of their rapid drying and leaving no disagreeable smell are in frequent use in the household for covering various articles of art. Resin is a class of non volatile (non-evaporating), solid or semisolid organic substances obtained directly from certain plants as exudations or prepared by polymerization of simple molecules. Some hard and soft resins used in varnishes are amber, copal, shellac, sandarac, mastic, resin of turpentine, dammar etc. Rosins are classified as pale yellow, yellow, reddish to yellow, brown or black rosin. If the injection water be not completely expelled the rosin is opaque. If the essential oils have not been completely eliminated the rosin is viscous and tacky. Spirit varnishes are more or less thin, more or less viscous, colourless or more or less coloured, opaque or transparent solutions, of one or more natural resins, e.g. shellac and shandarac etc., in one more appropriate volatile solvents which leave on evaporation a thin, more or less resistant film which both adorns and protects the object on which it is applied.
