Vascular Surgery: Procedures, Complications and Recovery by Vladimir Sihotsky Pdf

The book "Vascular Surgery: Procedures, Complications and Recovery'' was written by a team of vascular, cardiac and neurosurgeons working mainly in the East Slovak Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, and also Luis Pasteur University Hospital in Kosice, Slovakia. The book is addressed to students of medicine and also as fundamental principles of vascular surgery for residents in different surgical specializations. Vascular surgery has been rapidly developing in recent decades. Although the first successful arterial reconstructions appeared the beginning of the 20th century, the active management of arterial diseases has developed since the 1950s when new techniques of arterial surgery had been established. The first attempts of vascular reconstructions were performed by Alexis Carrel, a French surgeon who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1912 for inventing modern vascular suture, which is used still today. Significant development of vascular surgery brought the introduction of prosthetic grafts by Vorhees in 1952. That enabled De Backey to resect abdominal aortic aneurysm and replace it with synthetic graft in 1955. The first angiography with the catheter was performed by Seldinger in 1952, and Gruntzig in 1974 was the first who did percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and started the modern era of endovascular treatment. Since this time, an essential development in the treatment of vascular diseases has been observed. Nowadays, vascular surgeons solve the most severe cases of arterial diseases, solve complications of endovascular therapy, or are a part of hybrid procedures, which are a combination of surgical and endovascular treatment. In the first chapter, elementary clinical examinations, imagine methods, and also surgical techniques are described. Aortic disorders that are the most severe vascular diseases are analysed in the second, third, and forth chapters. Open aortic surgery is technically the most difficult part of vascular surgery and is associated with the higest mortality. Open aortic surgery is now being replaced by endovascular procedures due to lesser invasivity and mortaliy. The fifth chapter is dedicated maily to surgery of carotid arteries. Stenosis of the internal carotid artery is one of the reasons for stroke. Carotid endarterectomy that removes atherosclerotic plaque from the carotid bifurcations is effective in preventing stroke in patients with stenosis of the internal carotid artery. The sixth chapter analyses the problem of surgery of periferal arteries as periferal arterial occlusive disease or acure limnb ischemia. Both conditions can lead to major amputations and life long disability. The seventh capter analyses vascular trauma that may lead to severe bleeding or limb ischemia; both situations require almost immediate diagnosis and treatment. Periferal artery trauma is treated mainly by open surgery, while the treatment of aortic injury is mostly endovascular. Basic types of vascular access and problems of venous disorders are decribed in the eighth chapter. Venous diseases are not so life threatening but much more common compared to arterial. The last chapter deals with complications and recovery that is inevitable from an excellent surgical outcome.

Complications in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery by Jonothan J Earnshaw,,Michael Wyatt, Pdf

The aim of this book is to help clinicians to reduce the risk of complications after vascular and endovascular surgery. Whilst it is a surgical truism that the surgeon who does the most operations has the most complications (an acknowledgement of the fact that all vascular and endovascular procedures are potentially hazardous, and some extremely so), some surgeons seem to have more complications than others. This book is for all surgeons and radiologists who accept the challenge continually to improve their results. Each chapter is authored by an experienced (endo)vascular specialist who will have witnessed firsthand the perils and pitfalls of vascular procedures. They have seen all the complications, and even occasionally made errors of judgement. The chapters are full of information to help the reader avoid similar hazards in future. We live in a world of high patient expectation, where complications are seen as ‘someone’s fault’. Clinicians are familiar with innovations such as outcomes audit and assessment, procedural governance and quality improvement programmes. There is pressure to show progressive improvement. First class surgery is a combination of knowledge and skill and perhaps just a little luck, though as is oft quoted ‘the more you practice, the luckier you get’. The information in this book will provide insights, protocols, and tips and tricks to minimise the risks of procedures in vascular and endovascular surgery. It is therefore essential reading for anyone who treats patients with vascular disease.

Vascular Complications of Surgery and Intervention by Ramyar Gilani,Joseph L. Mills Sr. Pdf

The concept for this book evolved over many years of intense clinical practice during which a wide variety of vascular complications were encountered as a result of other surgical or interventional procedures. In this book, the authors describe cohesive efforts by experts in the field as they commit to advancing health care quality by all professionals. It should be noted at the outset that the book does not discuss various non-vascular or systemic complications of patients undergoing vascular interventions such as myocardial infarction, renal or respiratory failure. Instead, the content is divided into four separate sections. The material begins with an introduction to vascular anatomy and function. There follows a section addressing specific complications of the vascular system that can occur in any patient, sometimes even without intervention. The third section addresses complications specific to interventions and surgical procedures. The final section is dedicated to the delayed and long-term sequelae attributable to the most commonly encountered vascular complications. Vascular Complications of Surgery and Intervention: A Practical Guide is targeted towards dedicated health care professionals managing patients affected by inadvertent but potentially disastrous vascular complications and for those practitioners performing interventions either directly upon the vascular system or procedures that have potential for collateral impact.

Post-operative Complications by David Leaper,Iain Whitaker Pdf

Complications following surgical procedures are not only associated with significant morbidity and mortality, but also add immensely to the psychological burden of the patient and are disappointing for the surgical team. Recent research has led to a greater understanding of the response to surgery and anaesthesia, and great advances have been made in pre-operative preparation with appropriate investigations and pharmacological prophylaxis. These have reduced the incidence of many complications, but the risks are impossible to remove completely. This wide-reaching and practical handbook covers all aspects of post-surgical complications. It is divided into two sections: the first covers general complications such as pressure sores, complications of fluid balance and problems related to anaesthesia, while the second focuses on the complications encountered in the major surgical specialties. Fully revised and updated since the previous edition, and written by a team of experts, Post-operative Complications is essential reading for all those involved in caring for surgical patients. It is particularly relevant for junior doctors and those preparing for their membership of the Royal College of Surgery (MRCS) exams.

Peripheral Vascular Surgery by Martin Birnstingl Pdf

Peripheral Vascular Surgery aims to provide an updated and authoritative introduction to peripheral vascular surgery. Most arterial and venous diseases appear to be mainly the result, directly or indirectly, of mural deposition of solid material within a rapidly moving stream of blood. The vascular surgeon must therefore have a working knowledge of blood platelet interactions and probable mechanisms of thrombosis. He must also understand both the value and the limitations of present methods of blood flow measurement. This book provides an updated description of these complexities and presents essential basic knowledge that will prove valuable to surgeons and researchers working in this field. This text will be useful for post graduate surgeons, as well as for those in need of a reference useful for doctors in related fields such as general medicine and cardio-thoracic and orthopedic surgery.
