Origin of Vedas by K S Krishnan Pdf

This book is primarily about the Rgveda, the avowed source text of all Hindu religious texts. It is a collection of 1028 mostly unrelated hymns. The language in which it is composed is known as ‘Vedic’, from which Sanskrit is believed to have evolved later. About a fifth of the poems are prayers addressed to what could be ‘Nature Gods’. Others cover a motley of subjects. About fifteen of these hymns relates to cosmogony, but differing in essentials. Vedic clearly belongs to the Indo-European language family. Apart from many cognate words that are common in all these languages, many of the stories mentioned in the Rgveda have a strong resemblance to mythologies in the other languages of the family; not just to the Zoroastrian ones, but also to those of Greek, Celtic, Nordic, Slavic, Hittite and others. Origin of Vedas also discusses a wide range of issues related to the origin and expansion of the Indo-European language family. The author has managed to collect together a lot of information about the Rgveda; some of which most would not have heard about earlier. Those interested in these may go through chapter 4 and 9.

History of Ancient India Revisited, A Vedic-Puranic View. by Omesh K. Chopra Pdf

The Vedic-Puranic literature as well as archaeological, geological, historical, linguistic, and literary accounts have been reviewed to establish the various cultures that evolved in ancient India from about 3500 BCE to the Mahabharata War (1450 BCE). The book describes various misconceptions, e.g., the myth about an Aryan invasion. The following markers are used to establish the dates and geographical locations of various cultures: (i) The rise in sea levels due to melting of land-based snow after the last Ice Age. (ii) Migration of the Dravidian people from the lost continent of Kumari Kandam that submerged under the Indian Ocean. (iii) The dates for the start of farming, use of kiln-baked bricks, domestication of horses, and metal working in the Indian subcontinent. (iv) The dates when Sarasvati River dried up and the Mahabharata War occurred. The book notes that asva-containing or rath-containing names could not have existed before horses were domesticated or chariots were in use. The book also notes that Mathura Krsna is different from Dwarka Krsna; the two are separated by more then 1000 years. During Mathura Krsna’s time, conflicts were settled by hand-to-hand combat or with the use of a mace. In contrast, during Dwarka Krsna’s time, metal arms were used.

Vedic and Sanskrit Historical Linguistics by Jared Klein,Elizabeth Tucker Pdf

This volume contains 10 articles based on papers presented at the Linguistics sessions of the 13th World Sanskrit Conference (Edinburgh, July 2006) and shows the engagement of scholars with all aspects of Vedic Grammar, including phonology, inflectional and derivational morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicography, and stylistics. In many cases the articles constitute integral parts of long-term research projects of their authors that are ongoing even at this date of publication and therefore present the broad sweep of the field of Vedic linguistics as it is currently being practiced. The contributions include two on phonology (Kobayashi and Kummel), two on morphology (Garcia Ramon and Tucker), three on syntax (Bubenik, Hettrich, and Hock), one on the semantics of tense and aspect (Dahl), one on lexicography (Krisch), and one on stylistics (Klein). In several instances these papers fit integrally into the research agendas of their authors, representing parts of larger projects reflected in recent publications (Bubenik, Dahl, Garcia Ramon, Hettrich, Klein, Kobayashi) or deal with issues touched on repeatedly by their authors over a number of years (Hock). In one case (Krisch), the work announced has in the interim begun to appear and represent a broad reflection of research projects currently underway in Sanskrit Linguistics. That all but one of the papers focus exclusively on Vedic is simply a reflection of the reality that in Western countries the study of Sanskrit has frequently been treated as an entree to Indo-European linguistics, and it is especially the oldest texts that have been mined for whatever nuggets they can yield relative to our understanding of the proto-language. Decoding the Vedic System of Knowledge by Henry Romano Pdf

One of the oldest libraries of texts in India is the Vedas. Vedic texts are painstakingly corrected by the teacher. Instructors and students still teach them orally today. Virtual classrooms have allowed females to learn the Vedas and how they were changed through technology. Samaveda has a much more intricate connection with Rigveda than the other Vedas. Because all its verses except seventy-five are directly drawn from the Rigveda, it holds great historical significance. The eighth and especially the ninth of the Soma book provide the bulk of its content. It is similar to the Yajurveda in having been composed only for ritual use since the verses are all intended for chanting during the offering ceremonies. Unlike those in the Rigveda, these stanzas appear in the Sama-Veda as if they were to be spoken or recited. Their significance is solely determined by their relevance to particular rites, removed from their context in the Rigveda. The Vedas have been the subject of voluminous literature over the centuries, written in many languages, including English. Due to their symbolic language, the Vedas remain elusive. Despite exploring every ancient Indian sourcebook, Shankara, Ramanuja, and Madhva did not write full commentaries on the Vedas. Vedas are enigmatic and ethereal, and this adds to their mystery. In contrast to the voluminous commentary on Upanishads, Bhagawad Gita, Brahma sutras, and Mahapuranas, Sri Madhva wrote a short Rigbhyasya. Sayana Madhava, also known as Sayanacharya, is the most common source of information on the Vedas. Vedic texts are covered in complete detail in this voluminous work, basically a literal translation of the Vedas. Those who criticize it point out that it ignores the Vedas' symbolism and the Vedic tenets' hidden meanings. It is for this reason that the Vedas remain inadequately illuminated. In addition, Vedic Sanskrit differs from classical Sanskrit, a currently taught, written, and spoken language. A widespread family of languages, the proto-Indo-European languages, is derived from it. It was used as a book of words by Ugatri priests who preserved and lost knowledge.ts who preserved and lost knowledge. In the various songbooks known as Ganas, which show the prolongation, repetition, and interpolation of syllables necessary in singing in European publications, when the words are given below the musical notation, the stanzas assume the moral character of musical Samans or chants.

His ministry was essentially in Parthia (including Yemen), China and India. He was martyred in Mylapore, Chennai. He came to Kerala in AD 52. The Rig Veda by Sage Rishi Pdf

The Rig Veda is an ancient Indian sacred collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns. It is counted among the four canonical sacred texts (sruti) of Hinduism known as the Vedas. The Rig Veda contains several mythological and poetical accounts of the origin of the world, hymns praising the gods, and ancient prayers for life, prosperity, etc. Some of its verses are still recited as Hindu prayers, at religious functions and other occasions, making it probably the world's oldest religious texts in continued use. The Rigvedic hymns are dedicated to various deities, chief of whom are Indra, a heroic god praised for having slain his enemy Vrtra; Agni, the sacrificial fire; and Soma, the sacred potion or the plant it is made from. Equally prominent gods are the Adityas or Asura gods Mitra-Varuna and Ushas (the dawn). Also invoked are Savitr, Vishnu, Rudra, Pushan, Brihaspati or Brahmanaspati, as well as deified natural phenomena such as Dyaus Pita (the shining sky, Father Heaven), Prithivi (the earth, Mother Earth), Surya (the sun god), Vayu or Vata (the wind), Apas (the waters), Parjanya (the thunder and rain), Vac (the word), many rivers (notably the Sapta Sindhu, and the Sarasvati River). The Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, Sadhyas, Ashvins, Maruts, Rbhus, and the Vishvadevas ("all-gods") as well as the "thirty-three gods" are the groups of deities mentioned. The hymns mention various further minor gods, persons, phenomena and items, and contain fragmentary references to possible historical events, notably the struggle between the early Vedic people (known as Vedic Aryans, a subgroup of the Indo-Aryans) and their enemies, the Dasa or Dasyu and their mythical prototypes, the Pani (the Bactrian Parna).

Original Sanskrit Texts, Origin and History by J. Muir Pdf

Excerpt from Original Sanskrit Texts, Origin and History: The People of India, Their Religion and Institutions When I speak, however, of the history of the Veda, I am reminded that I am employing a term which will suggest to the philosophical reader the idea of a minute and systematic account of all the various opinions which the Indians have held in regard to their sacred books from the commencement, through all the successive stages of their theological development, down to the present time. To do anything like this, however, would be a task demanding an extent of research far exceeding that to which I can pretend. At some future time, indeed, we may hope that a history of the theological and speculative ideas of the Indians, which shall treat this branch also of. the subject, may be written by some competent scholar. My own design is much more modest. I only attempt to show what are the opinions on the subject of the Veda, which have been entertained by certain distinct sets of writers whom I may broadly divide into three classes - (1) the mythological,(2) the scholastic, and (3) the Vedic. The first, or mythological class, embraces the writers of the different Puranas and Itihasas, and partially those of the Brahmanas and Upanishads, who, like the compilers of the Puranas, frequently combine the mythological with the theosophic element. The second, or scholastic class, includes the authors of the different philosophical schools, or Darsanas, with their scholiasts and expositors, and the commentators on the Vedas.
