Vernor's Ginger Ale by Keith Wunderlich Pdf

Vernor's Ginger Ale has sparkling fizz, a unique taste, and a history that goes back before Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Hires, or Moxie. Upon returning from the Civil War in 1866, James Vernor opened a pharmacy in Detroit. He also opened a barrel of ginger ale extract he had created before the war. He discovered the four years of aging had mellowed the taste to perfection. A new "deliciously different" flavor had been created, and Vernor's Ginger Ale was born. From a small drugstore in Detroit to a product enjoyed across America and Canada, Vernor's is a success story. Vernor's is the story of a small back-room product turned into a highly successful brand. At over 140 years old, Vernor's is America's oldest continuously produced soft drink. Vernor's Ginger Ale takes readers on a journey from pharmacy to factory, from entrepreneur to franchised corporation.

How to Live in Detroit Without Being a Jackass by Aaron Foley Pdf

In one of Curbed: Detroit’s Top 11 Books about Detroit, Aaron Foley, editor of The Detroit Neighborhood Guidebook, offers the definitive inside look at one of America’s most talked-about and least understood cities. With a wry sense of humor, Foley, a native Detroiter, walks you through the most difficult questions about the Motor City, offering seven simple rules for making it there. Perfect for coastal transplants, wary suburbanites, unwitting gentrifiers, or start-up disruptors, this recently updated guidebook offers advice on everything from the glories of Vernors ginger ale to how to rehab a house to how to not sound like an uninformed racist. In twenty short chapters, Foley walks you through: How Detroiters do business The unofficial guide to enjoying Faygo How to be gay in Detroit How to raise a Detroit kid How to party in Detroit. Both hilarious and insightful, this no-frills look at Motown is written for those who live there but also, as Vanity Fair put it, “for anyone participating in contemporary global urbanization who would like to avoid behaving like a subjugating dick.”

A Detroit Anthology by Anna Clark Pdf

A unique perspective of the Motor City, this anthology combines stories told by both longtime residents and newcomers from activists to teachers to artists to students. While Detroit has always been rich in stories, too often those stories are told back to the city by outsiders looking in, believing they can explain Detroit back to itself. As editor, Anna Clark writes in the introduction, "These are the stories we tell each other over late nights at the pub and long afternoons on the porch. We share them in coffee shops, at church social hours, in living rooms, and while waiting for the bus. These are stories full of nodding asides and knowing laughs. These are stories addressed to the rhetorical "you"―with the ratcheted up language that comes with it―and these are stories that took real legwork to investigate . . . You will not find 'positive' stories about Detroit in this collection, or 'negative' ones. But you will find true stories." Featuring essays, photographs, art, and poetry by Grace Lee Boggs, John Carlisle, Desiree Cooper, Dream Hampton, Steve Hughes, Jamaal May, Tracie McMillan, Marsha Music, Shaka Senghor, Thomas J. Sugrue, and many others.

A Rich, Deliciously Satisfying Collection of Breakfast Recipes by Janet Sue Terry Pdf

A Rich, Deliciously Satisfying Collection of Breakfast RecipesI grew up with hot buttermilk biscuits, gravy, meat, eggs, fried potatoes, and sometimes fried apples on the breakfast table every single morning. Over the years I acquired a valued collection of my own favorite recipes. They are a whisper from days gone by. A trip to the past when breakfast was the most important meal of the day. The first meal of the morning was a celebration of life and the gift of a new day. Breakfast was a time for families to congregate and fortify one another for the hectic, uncertain day that lay ahead. Most of the recipes in this book are high calorie-high fat recipes. You can control the fat content in your food by substituting ingredients when you cook at home. You have no such control over the food you eat in restaurants. The following quote sums up my thoughts exactly: ?Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.? -- Adelle Davis (1904-1974). Therefore, if you are going to eat one good meal today, make it breakfast.?A Rich, Deliciously Satisfying Collection of Breakfast Recipes includes: gourmet coffee, (International coffee, Christmas coffee, Irish, viennese, cappuccino, hazelnut cafe-au-lait, French vanilla, etc.) creamers, hot chocolate (French, Mayan, Mexican, etc.), and tea (apricot mint, orange, lemon almond, etc.) recipes. Fruit drinks, cider, and smoothie recipes. Soft drinks, (root beer, ginger ale, and a Coca-Cola? clone recipe), soda drinks, and punch recipes. Quick fruit breads (banana nut bread, cherry bread, pumpkin bread, apple bread, etc.), muffins, and French toast recipes. Fruit bread and mixes in a canning jar (banana nut bread, gingerbread, zucchini bread, etc.) recipes. Jelly (mint, currant, Apple, Grape, Cherry, etc.), jam, preserves, marmalades, and syrup recipes. Pancakes (blueberry, cranberry, buttermilk, etc.), crepes, and waffles (Kentucky gingerbread, buttermilk, etc.), recipes. Doughnuts (yeast, cake, filled, etc.), rolls (cinnamon, sticky buns, orange swirl, etc.), strudel, and Danish recipes. Coffee cakes, streusel, berry cakes, breakfast cobblers, kuchen, and crumb cakes recipes. Scones and bannock recipes. Oatmeal, rice, grits, and granola recipes. Southern gravy (red-eye, sausage gravy, etc.), and biscuits (buttermilk, cheese, raisins, etc.) Breakfast meats (ham, bacon, pork chops, fried chicken, fried squirrel, fried rabbit, sausage, etc.), recipes. Breakfast side dishes (fried green tomatoes, hash browns, fried squash, fried apples, fried corn, etc.), recipes. Bread pudding (cranberry bread pudding with fruits and whisky or rum sauces, chocolate bread pudding, etc.), recipes. Egg recipes, including; omelets, casseroles, frittatas, enchiladas, pizzas, pies, quesadillas, burritos, stir-fry, strata, popovers, and quiches. You wll treasure this comprehensible breakfast cookbook for many years to come. This recipe book also contains a brief history on some foods and cooking tips including; making yeast breads, canning homemade jellies, jams, marmalades, preserves, and conserves, designing and giving gift baskets filled with homemade items such as gourmet coffee mixes, homemade jelly, jam, marmalade, preserves, syrup, and fruit breads baked in a jar that will last a good twelve months in the freezer.I wrote the kind of cookbook I want to keep on hand in my own kitchen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I will.

Sanders Confectionery by Greg Tasker Pdf

For more than 130 years, there has been no sweeter word in Detroit than Sanders. The venerable confectioner was once as much a part of Detroit's streetscape as the Big Three, Hudson's, and Coney Islands. Sanders was more than just an ice-cream and candy shop. A Detroit icon, it served a fountain of memories for generations. Detroiters stood two and three deep behind lunch counters for tuna or egg salad sandwiches, devil's food buttercream "bumpy" cake, hot fudge sundaes, and Sanders' signature dessert--hot fudge cream puffs. As Detroit boomed, so did Sanders. At its peak, the company boasted more than 50 stores, with its products available in as many as 200 supermarkets. The Sanders story began in Chicago, where Fred Sanders opened his first shop. A series of misfortunes prompted him to relocate to Detroit, where he began selling his confections on Woodward Avenue. Business grew steadily, and by the early 1900s, he had opened other shops along Woodward and elsewhere in Detroit. The Motor City nearly lost Sanders in the mid-1980s, but its desserts shops have begun resurfacing, thanks to another Detroit institution, Morley Brands LLC, which bought the Sanders brand.

The Final Four of Everything by Mark Reiter,Richard Sandomir Pdf

Edited by Mark Reiter and Richard Sandomir, and featuring contributions from experts on everything from breakfast cereal and movie gunfights to First Ladies and bald guys, The Final Four of Everything celebrates everything that's great, surprising, or silly in America, using the foolproof method of bracketology to determine what we love or hate-and why. As certain to make you laugh as it will start friendly arguments, The Final Four of Everything is the perfect book for know-it-alls, know-a-littles, and anyone with an opinion on celebrity mugshots, literary heroes, sports nicknames, or bacon. Bracketology is a unique way of organizing information that dates back to the rise of the knockout (or single elimination) tournament, perhaps in medieval times. Its origins are not precisely known, but there was genius in the first bracket design that hasn't changed much over the years. You, of course, may be familiar with the bracket format via the NCAA basketball tournament pairings each March. If you've ever watched ESPN or participated in a March Madness office pool, you know what a bracket looks like. The Final Four of Everything takes the idea one step further, and applies the knockout format to every category BUT basketball. In areas where taste, judgment, and hard-earned wisdom really matter, we've set out to determine, truly, the Final Four of Everything.

If This Porch Could Talk by Arlene Curns Pdf

If This Porch Could Talk was written when Arlene was ninety-five years old and takes place in the 1990s--a kinder, gentler time, a golden era that we will never know again. Arlene relied on stories recorded in journals that she has kept for many years, providing a wealth of memories to draw from. Her story is centered around the historical background of her beloved hometown of Flint, Michigan. It is a tapestry of real life--sincere, heartfelt, a sweet, nostalgic story. It was 1995 when Arlene and her husband Jack purchased a home in Mott Park, Flint, Michigan, for a summer home. They embarked on a restoration project, refreshing the home. A Victorian porch was added across the front of the home, and many conversations took place on that porch. Some stories are humorous, others are sad. It celebrates memories of her family, days that she thought were ordinary. Looking back, they seem extraordinary. A great deal of Flint history is recorded. Some of the stories relate to things that are only memories such as Christmas shopping in Flint's magical downtown, dining at the Carriage Room on Smith-Bridgman's mezzanine, and the old farmers market. Other stories describe traditions that continue to this day--the Old Newsboys Sale, Applewood and the Sloan Summer Fair. Other historical topics touched on include the brick street in the downtown area, the metal arches proclaiming Flint as the Vehicle City, Glenwood Cemetery, and the Whaley House, among others. The flashbacks are interesting and beautifully written. Live again a thrilling performance of the Shrine Circus through Arlene's vivid description. You are there! Arlene has a way of painting a picture with words. You feel as though you are right beside her. If you enjoyed her debut book, Homemade Noodles & Cars, you're sure to treasure this one too. Her story is uplifting and leaves you with hope in your heart.
