Vic reads an old newspaper about a man-eating tree. It probably isn't true but just searching will make a nice adventure tale. She runs into killers enroute, has to survive in the wilderness, is attacked in the streets of Tamatave and then goes searching. Vic finds mind-boggling surprises, primates unlike any she has ever known, experiences a deja vu which she dismisses buy maybe shouldn't, and by the time she gets out, the geography of Madagascar has been altered! Pop, bang, slam, pow, oof, roar - it's all in there!
Vic's editor thinks she hasn't done enough swashbuckling lately, so when Vic runs across an old article about a man-eating tree in Madagascar, it's a go! She figures the story isn't true, but just the search will make a few good articles. She can get photos of cute little lemurs, too. Maybe hunt crocodiles on the coast, She can eat local and write about that. And she feels, certainly, she will meet some colorful characters to write about. Vic is correct on every count - sort of. Plus there are a few other surprises. Death comes calling even before she arrives and it keeps on her trail like a hungry fox in a chicken pen. Like all Vic Challenger novels, A Savage Place is driven by action and unpredictable adventure. You'll never guess all that happens.
