Vincent and Alice and Alice by Shane Jones Pdf

From the visionary author of Light Boxes, a mind-bending office comedy, and a touching modern love story set against the backdrop of an ever-increasingly disorienting America. Being home all the time is depressing, so I tell my boss "I'm ready for anything" in the strongest conference call voice in the world while driving my hand into a family-sized bag of tortilla chips. Without a future, no Alice, I'm ready for an adventure. Meet Vincent. After his divorce from Alice he's lost his way, and is mindlessly working for the State, counting down the days till retirement. When his boss tells him to participate in a program that promises not only to increase productivity, but show him his "ideal life" he thinks: what's the harm? Others have seen new marked improvements in productivity and personal happiness. Willing to try anything to move away from the heartbreak of Alice, Vincent reluctantly complies. But what the program shows him, is that his ideal life is simply Alice. She's back. Is she real? A clone? A hologram? Despite the lingering questions, Vincent eases back into love and begins to live his life again with Alice, that is, until the real Alice returns. A novel about work, love, and how to live in the present moment, Vincent and Alice and Alice flings us through a shockingly funny and tender-hearted world just a few degrees different from our own, one that introduces us to a wild cast of characters, including the enigmatic CEO of PER, Dorian Blood, a mysterious under-cover cop, and the acid-tongued Elderly, a man living in his car who may be the only one who understands how to live in reality.

The Lords of the Realm by John Helyar Pdf

"The ultimate chronicle of the games behind the game."—The New York Times Book Review Baseball has always inspired rhapsodic elegies on the glory of man and golden memories of wonderful times. But what you see on the field is only half the game. In this fascinating, colorful chronicle—based on hundreds of interviews and years of research and digging—John Helyar brings to vivid life the extraordinary people and dramatic events that shaped America's favorite pastime, from the dead-ball days at the turn of the century through the great strike of 1994. Witness zealous Judge Landis banish eight players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, after the infamous "Black Sox" scandal; the flamboyant A's owner Charlie Finley wheel and deal his star players, Vida Blue and Rollie Fingers, like a deck of cards; the hysterical bidding war of coveted free agent Catfish Hunter; the chain-smoking romantic, A. Bartlett Giamatti, locking horns with Pete Rose during his gambling days of summer; and much more. Praise for The Lords of the Realm "A must-read for baseball fans . . . reads like a suspense novel."—Kirkus Reviews "Refreshingly hard-headed . . . the only book you'll need to read on the subject."—Newsday "Lots of stories . . . well told, amusing . . . edifying."—The Washington Post

Vincent van Gogh: by ARNOLD Pdf

As a five year old I encountered a picture of a young man in a rakish hat and a yellow coat, on the wall of a large classroom. There was something instantly intriguing about the image, but it was also puzzling because it represented neither politician nor prince, the usual fare for Australian school decorations. I was eventually told that this was a reproduction of a painting, the artist was Vincent van Gogh, and that the subject was some young Frenchman. On special days we assembled in that room and during the next several years I found myself gazing beyond visiting speakers at the fellow in the yellow jacket. It was almost another fifty years before I felt properly conversant with the portrait and realized that van Gogh's subject, Armand Roulin, was seventeen at the time ofthe original painting and had died at seventy-four during my schoolboy contemplations. In the interim my enjoyment of the works of the Impressionists and Post Impressionists had grown and I occasionally ran into the name of Dr. Gachet, Vincent's last attending physician, in books and catalog essays. The doctor was my entree to the overlapping charms of medical and art histories. In 1987 I had the good fortune to participate as a biochemist in the centenary celebration of the Pasteur Institut in Paris.

Chrysalis by Gary Erakleous Pdf

When a molecular biologist discovers a miraculous vaccine, the pharmaceutical industry is eager to get hold of it, but when he refuses to reveal the elements of his formula, all hell breaks loose . . . Vincent, an idealistic, unassuming research scientist, together with his bright assistant, Dorothy, discover a vaccine that when injected into the human body heals any wounded organ. He tests the vaccine for the first time on a teenager, Lucas, Dorothy's son, after a terrible car accident, and Lucas begins to recover. Lucas is a star basketball player who just graduated high school and who earned a scholarship at Yale University. Vincent's rival, Kushner, the materialistic and greedy director of a pharmaceutical company, kidnaps Lucas in a desperate attempt to find the components of the vaccine and produce it. Vincent and Dorothy at once accuse Kushner of the kidnapping because of the rivalry that exists between them. Unfortunately for them, the kidnapping was executed in such a cunning way that they cannot prove their suspicions to the police. On the contrary, the police suspects Vincent of experimenting with the vaccine and causing Lucas's death. It falls upon Vincent's and Dorothy's shoulders to prove their innocence, and to find Lucas before Kushner kills him after he is done with his experiments. As they try to channel through a labyrinth of planted evidence, Vincent and Dorothy come across, among other things, a fake death certificate and Lucas's lookalike dead body. The plot is teeming with twists and turns, a gripping series of events and an emotional outpouring of grief and courage from a mother who struggles against a well-organized criminal conspiracy to save her son. The undertaking gives Vincent and Dorothy an opportunity to articulate their true feelings toward each other, which lay dormant in their hearts since her husband's untimely death.

Opening the Doors of Perception by Anthony Peake Pdf

An eye-opening response to Aldous Huxley’s widely influential work on psychedelics, physical reality, and consciousness What exactly are hallucinations? Are they actually doors to another reality? Anthony Peake thinks so. In this stunning book, he takes Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception and updates it using the latest information from quantum mechanics, neurochemistry, and consciousness studies. Most human beings perceive the doors of perception as being securely closed. But here, Peake analyzes the concept of ‘the scale of transcendence’ and suggests there is a scale of perceptions whereby the doors are slowly opened, bit by bit, to reveal the true nature of reality. For ‘normal’ people, glimpses of this reality—what the Gnostics called ‘The Pleroma’—are experienced during ‘noetic’ experiences. However, for others, the doors are prized open by certain neurological processes starting with migraine and progressing through various altered states such as temporal lobe epilepsy, bipolar syndrome, autism, and schizophrenia. A pioneering work on the relationship between physical reality and consciousness, Opening the Doors of Perception suggests that man can, indeed, perceive reality in its true glory.
