The history of planning is much more, according to these authors, than the recorded progress of planning as a discipline and a profession. These essays counter the mainstream narrative of rational, scientific development with alternative histories that reveal hitherto invisible planning practices and agendas. While the official story of planning celebrates the state and its traditions of city building and regional development, these stories focus on previously unacknowledged actors and the noir side of planning. Through a variety of critical lenses—feminist, postmodern, and postcolonial—the essays examine a broad range of histories relevant to the preservation and planning professions. Some contributors uncover indigenous planning traditions that have been erased from the record: African American and Native American traditions, for example. Other contributors explore new themes: themes of gendered spaces and racist practices, of planning as an ordering tool, a kind of spatial police, of "bodies, cities, and social order" (influenced by Foucault, Lefebvre, and others), and of resistance. This scrutiny of the class, race, gender, ethnic, or ideological biases of ideas and practices inherent in the notion of planning as a modernist social technology clearly points to the inadequacy of modernist planning histories. Making the Invisible Visible redefines planning as the regulation of the physicality, sociality, and spatiality of the city. Its histories provide the foundation of a new, alternative planning paradigm for the multicultural cities of the future.

In 1908, the ruler of the Balinese realm of Klungkung and more than 100 members of his family and court were massacred when they marched deliberately into the fire of the Dutch colonial army. The question of what their action meant and its continued significance in contemporary Klungkung forms the basis of Margaret Wiener's complex anthropolological history. Wiener challenges colonial and academic claims that Klungkung had no "real" power and argues that such claims enabled colonial domination. By focusing on Balinese discourses she makes clear the choices open to Balinese, both at the time of the Dutch conquest and in its narration. At the same time, she shows how these discourses, which revolve around magical weapons acquired from invisible agents such as gods, spirits, and ancestors, offer an alternative understanding of Klungkung's power. Moving between Balinese and Dutch narratives and between past and present, Wiener critiques colonial accounts by recounting Balinese memories and interpretations. Her attention to history and local situations illuminates the ways in which colonialism and orientalist scholarship have obscured the power of indigenous rulers and shows how Klungkung, once Bali's paramount realm, was relegated to a peripheral corner of the Indonesian nation-state. The professor who taught Systems Theory of Psychology said, "There should always be a learning process in everything we do." I asked him what I should learn from supporting an international sales force of fourteen people without appreciation and recognition. He enthusiastically responded, "You may have to learn it is time to look for another job." That psychology class became my therapy, which helped me to walk through the final days of my employment at that company and prepared me for my next chapter. Most of my thirty-seven-year corporate journey was spent in a secretarial/administrative role. Frankly, I had one of the best seats in the house. While supporting the senior leaders of companies, I learned a lot from the letters I typed, the papers I filed, the phone messages I took, the emails I read, and the conversations I overheard. Corporate America matured me and provided me with transferable skills. When I began working in corporate America, I was invisible, a shy, quiet, naive, young woman. Amazingly, I walked out a visible woman, stronger, confident, with leadership skills. Two nonprofit organizations emerged from me: a church, Cathedral of Faith International Ministries, Inc., and a personal ministry organization, Gwen Wheeler International Ministries, Inc.
