British Cinema and the Cold War by Tony Shaw Pdf

"Shaw analyses key films of the period, including High Treason, which put a British McCarthyism on celluloid; the fascinatingly ambiguous science fiction thriller The Quatermass Experiment; the court-room drama based on the trial of Hungary's Cardinal Mindszenty, The Prisoner; the dystopic The Damned, made by one of Hollywood's blacklisted directors, Joseph Losey; and the CIA-funded, animated version of George Orwell's classic novel Animal Farm. The result is a deeply probing study of how Cold War issues were refracted through British films, compared with their imported American and East European counterparts, and how the British public received this 'war propaganda'."--BOOK JACKET.

Visions of Yesterday by Jeffrey Richards Pdf

Film is an important source of social history, as well as having been a popular art form from the early twentieth century. This study shows how a society, consciously or unconsciously, is mirrored in its cinema. It considers the role of the cinema in dramatizing popular beliefs and myths, and takes three case studies – American populism, British imperialism, German Nazism – to explain how a nation’s pressures, tensions and hopes come through in its films. Examining the American cinema is accomplished by analysing the careers of three great directors, John Ford, Frank Capra and Leo McCarey, while the British and German cinemas are studied by theme. The analysis of the British Empire as seen in film broke exciting new ground with a pioneering account of ‘the cinema of Empire’ when it was first published in 1973. With full filmographies and a carefully selected bibliography it is an outstanding work of reference and its lively approach makes it a delight to read. Reviews of the original edition: ‘A work of considerable force and considerable wit.’ – Clive James, Observer ‘...a work that is original, mentally stimulating and most pleasurable to read.’ – Focus on Film

Yesterday’s Lunch by Kenna Wren Aila Pdf

Kenna grew up in what seemed to be a normal family, but appearances were deceiving. From a young age, she suffered abuse and neglect, and as an adult, she realized that although she had survived so much, she had overcome very little. In Yesterday’s Lunch, Kenna Wren Aila shares her personal story of the abuse she suffered and how it affected her, chronicling her journey of faith and determination as she seeks out a promise made to her by God. She also shares how she learned to process what she went through as a child, and how, as an adult, she learned to rely on her faith to give her strength and to put the past behind her. With faith, Kenna was able to look to the future for hope. Yesterday’s Lunch can also help other victims of abuse and neglect to learn how to process—or digest—what has happened in their lives in order to similarly look forward to what tomorrow holds, without constantly looking back.

Cinemas of the World by James Chapman Pdf

The cinema has been the pre-eminent popular art form of the 20th century. In Cinemas of the World, James Chapman examines the relationship between film and society in the modern world: film as entertainment medium, film as a reflection of national cultures and preoccupations, film as an instrument of propaganda. He also explores two interrelated issues that have recurred throughout the history of cinema: the economic and cultural hegemony of Hollywood on the one hand, and, on the other, the attempts of film-makers elsewhere to establish indigenous national cinemas drawing on their own cultures and societies. Chapman examines the rise to dominance of Hollywood cinema in the silent and early sound periods. He discusses the characteristic themes of American movies from the Depression to the end of the Cold War especially those found in the western and film noir – genres that are often used as vehicles for exploring issues central to us society and politics. He looks at national cinemas in various European countries in the period between the end of the First World War and the end of the Second, which all exhibit the formal and aesthetic properties of modernism. The emergence of the so-called "new cinemas" of Europe and the wider world since 1960 are also explored. "Chapman is a tough-thinking, original writer . . . an engaging, excellent piece of work."—David Lancaster, Film and History

Leonard Cohen, Yesterday's Tomorrow by Marc Hendrickx Pdf

Revered then virtually forgotten, Leonard Cohen has proved a lasting phenomenon. One of the most influential songwriters of our time, reconciling literature and poetry with popular music. In the 1990s Leonard Cohen’s music career appeared to have died. Cohen was in his seventies by then and no one expected new songs, never mind a worldwide tour that broke records for attendance. While many discovered his work during this resurgence, long-standing fans had never deserted him. His combination of poetry and soulful song had reached into their hearts when they were young and his connection with them never weakened. As a teenager author, Marc Hendrickx, wrote to Cohen and later the singer turned up on Marc’s doorstep. This is Marc’s journey through the work of Cohen. There are no conclusions, simply perspective and reflections.

Badr by C. H. Foertmeyer Pdf

Marlin Goldburg, a forty-year-old Jewish realtor living in the United States, is killed in a terrible traffic accident. Later that day, in Sarsarif, Iraq, Abdul-Halim is blessed with the birth of his first son, whom he names, Badr. What can the two events have in common? As the years go by, Badr is taught at home, hate for the rich American Jews that finance Israel's existence in Arab lands. His father and uncles teach him to hate all infidels, especially the American infidels who have now invaded his country and hometown. But, as the lessons in hate began, so did Badr's dreams of pale white hands, always held together, as if in prayer. The praying, pale white hands, obviously those of an infidel, seem to be in direct contrast to his family's teachings. So, whose hands are they, and what are they trying to tell Badr, who has now grown up to be "Lone Wolf", the most deadly of Iraqi insurgents? Is Marlin Goldburg speaking to Badr from the grave? But how, and why?
