Vocabulary of the Tigré Language (Classic Reprint) by Karl Moritz Von Beurmann Pdf
Excerpt from Vocabulary of the Tigre Language After having left Neisse M. V. Beurmann did not abandon the idea of collecting a vocabulary of the Tigre language and so he daily wrote down those words which he had heard from Abu Bekr, and as he was obliged to speak with him only Arabic he followed Humbert's Guide francais-arabe, asking always the Arabic word of Humbert and writing down the Tigre translation. Though he wished to obtain all those words in Tigre which that Arabic vocabulary contains nevertheless the preparation for his second expedition which alas! Had so deplorable an end required so much time that even he with all his extraordinary energy and zeal was not able to finish this work. So when he had started again on the day after Christmas 1861 in search of Vogel's te mains with the firm intention either to cross the whole African continent from Benghazi to Chartum and Massowa, or never more to return, the materials he had collected were sent to me to be published. Vocabulary of the Yoruba Language (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Crowther Pdf
Excerpt from Vocabulary of the Yoruba Language The Yoruba Country, lying between the 2 and 6 W.long, and 6 and 10 N.lat., and due north of the Bight of Benin, has been, for more than a quarter of a century, the chief seat of the African slave-trade. Many Negroes, and, amongst them, Mr. Crowther, now a Clergyman of the Church of England, the compiler of the following work, were re-captured from Brazilian slavers by the cruisers of the British squadron, and landed at Sierra Leone, where they received a Christian education in the schools of the Church Missionary Society. No less than 3000 of these involuntary emigrants have since returned to the land of their birth; and it has also pleased God to bless the labours of the Society's Missionaries in the chief town, Abbeokuta, to the establishment of a flourishing Mission amongst the Aborigines, commenced August 3, 1846, and now numbering several hundred converts. A Christian literature became at once a desideratum for this rising Christian community. This want Mr. Crowther is at present supplying. A Yoruba Primer, the Gospel according to St. Luke, the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, the Epistles of St. James and St. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Grammar and Vocabulary of Language Spoken by Motu Tribe, New Guinea My knowledge of the language has been acquired during seven years residence among the people who speak it. Dictionary of the Kiniassa Language (Classic Reprint) by John Rebman Pdf
Excerpt from Dictionary of the Kiniassa Language After the Committee of the Church Miss. Society in England had resolved upon printing this Dictionary, and after they had charged the Editor with the execution of their design, the latter repeatedly was urgent with Mr. Rebman, to give him some historical hints in regard to the first occasion or idea which had brought him on composing this Dictionary. Mr. Rebman complied with the Editor's request by dicta ting to his wife (only a very short time before his death) the following lines. Grammar and Vocabulary of the Lau Language, Solomon Islands (Classic Reprint) by Walter George Ivens Pdf
Excerpt from Grammar and Vocabulary of the Lau Language, Solomon Islands In the translations made into Lau, some use has been made of the gerundive, following the use in Sa'a; but until we have further evidence of the validity of this usage it must be regarded as not belonging to the genius of the Lau language, and it is therefore omitted here. A Grammar of the Mandingo Language by Robert Maxwell Macbrair Pdf
Excerpt from A Grammar of the Mandingo Language: With Vocabularies The greatest difference of dialect existing amongst the aborigines of the Gambia, proceeds from the frequent omission of the possessive and personal pronouns, the neglect of the sign of the possessive case, and the abbreviation of familiar words and phrases. But such contracted forms of expression render the phraseology somewhat ambiguous in its meaning, and would make it almost unintelligible in writing. The natives of Western Africa have also little idea of the value and divisions of time; hence some ambiguity occasionally arises in relating the circum stances of an event. The author has endeavoured to fix the value of the tenses of the verb with as much precision as usage will admit of. Dictionary of the Tebele Shuna Languages by W. A. Elliott Pdf
Excerpt from Dictionary of the Tebele Shuna Languages: With Illustrative Sentences and Some Grammatical Notes In the sentences at the end of the volume and in the Notes on Grammar will be found a few examples of dialect differences, but generally no note has been taken of these on account of inadequate knowledge. The aid of all settlers in Southern Zambesia is requested in the preparation of a really satisfactory dictionary of the language of the Mashuna. Notes in the margin of the vocabularies on any peculiarities of speech, observed and examined with care, would be of great value. Attention may be called especially to the examination of new words, of new meanings and forms of already recorded words, of variations in prefixes of nouns from those here set forth, of the use of double prefixes, of the past and perfect tenses indicative of the verb, and generally the moods and tenses, and idiomatic expressions, in which the Shuna language is believed to be very rich. Interleaved copies of this Dictionary may be obtained from Messrs. Whiteley Walker. A valuable foundation in grammar has already been laid by Fr. Hartmann. The orthography adopted here is different in some respects from that used by Fr. Hartmann; but after fourteen years' residence in Matebele Land, I had fixed my Spelling before his was printed, and I see no reason to make alteration now. Different types have been used for the two languages, clarendon for the Tebele, and small capitals for the Shuna, throughout the book. This, it is hoped, will conduce to clearness. The apposition of Tebele and Shuna words in Vocabulary I. Does not imply any correspondence of meaning in those words. The first comparative grammar of the Semitic languages, by H. Zimmern, was published a hundred years ago and the last original work of this kind was issued in Russian in 1972 by B.M. Grande. The present grammar, designed to come out in the centenary of the completion of Zimmern's work, fills thus a gap. Besides, it is based on both classical and modern Semitic languages, it takes new material of these last decades into account, and situates the Semitic languages in the wider context of Afro-Asiatic. The introduction briefly presents the languages in question. The main parts of the work are devoted to phonology, morphology, and syntax, with elaborate charts and diagrams. Then follows a discussion of fundamental questions related to lexicographical analysis. The study is supplemented by a glossary of linguistic terms used in Semitics, by a selective bibliography, by a general index, and by an index of words and forms. The book is the result of twenty-five years of research and teaching in comparative Semitic grammar.
