Wage-Labor and Capital by Karl Marx Pdf

Excerpt from Wage-Labor and Capital In this volume are presented two of the earlier writings of Karl Marx, with a special "Introduction" to each by Frederick Engels. The first, entitled Wage-Labor and Capital, was translated for us by Dr. Harriet E. Lothrop, of Boston, from the standard German edition prepared by Engels in 1891. This is the only complete English edition of it that has yet appeared, and its accuracy was doubly secured by a critical comparison of its every sentence with the German text, made at the request of the translator by Herman Simpson, of New York, who also added foot-. notes wherever comment seemed needful. In the performance of their respective task, both kept in mind the allimportant consideration, that in the works of Marx, as in all works, truly scientific, the exact expression is an essential factor and should not, therefore, be sacrificed to "literary style" in its transfer from one language to another. To those who are already acquainted with Marx's later essay on Value, Price, and Profit, this much earlier one on Wage-Labor and Capital will no doubt seem somewhat familiar. Still more familiar will both appear to the industrious reader of Capital. And for obvious reasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Wage-Workers of America and the Relation of Capital to Labor (Classic Reprint) by John Stolze Pdf

Excerpt from The Wage-Workers of America and the Relation of Capital to Labor It is said that all the laboring classes of the civilized world have been, and are, as a body poor. This is an incorrect statement, for the ques tion arises who are the poor and who are the rich Poverty and wealth are at best only relative states or conditions. When the ques tion is viewed philosophically, it is not proper to make a comparison from the standpoint of ownership. Or how much wealth one has, but conditions. One may be miserably poor and have plenty of money. Our object, however, is not to champion the cause of the poor with a View of making everybody rich, or to make the rich richer, or to take from them what by right belongs to them but what we contend for is justice, that all men may have an equal chance under the law of the land to acquire a competency, the same right that nature gives to every man. Wages, the Mother of Profit: An Exposition of the Status of Wages in Political Economy (Classic Reprint) by E. H. Putnam Pdf

Excerpt from Wages, the Mother of Profit: An Exposition of the Status of Wages in Political Economy This booklet points toward the east whence must come the dawn of a better social day. Its author has been in various capacities intimately related to our industrial life for more than twenty-five years. As superintendent in several of the large manufactories of the land he has stood midway between capitalist and laborer, and has studied the problem from both sides. His words in the essay which follows are a mature and independent statement of conclusions which he has reached, as, for a quarter of a century, he has con fronted the growing problem of capital and labor and has endeavored to think it through to a practical solution. Labor in the Changing World (Classic Reprint) by R. M. Maciver Pdf

Excerpt from Labor in the Changing World Now that the conflict of nations is ended, let us hope forever, another conflict, the abiding and paramount issue between labor and capital, takes the center of the stage. What is that issue? Whither is it driving us? What way of deliverance is possible from the grievous disturbances and monstrous evils which it reveals? These questions I have sought to discuss and if possible to answer in this little book. I have limited myself to the central question, the place of labor in the industrial system. The real issue lies beyond the recriminations in which both sides indulge. It is of course natural that the workers should insist on the exploiting selfishness of employers in general, and that employers should charge the workers in general with slackness and irresponsibility. Each party can bring evidence to support its indictment. But what is the conclusion ? That workers, in the situation of employers, would be less grasping? Wages and Capital by F. W. Taussig Pdf

Excerpt from Wages and Capital: An Examination of the Wages Fund Doctrine I have to express my warm thanks to Professor Maffeo Pantaleoni, who generously put his well-stocked library at my disposal in Rome during the winter of 1894 - 95; to Mr. James Bonar, of London, who read the manuscript of some of the earlier chapters, and greatly aided me by his criticism; and to my colleague Professor W. J. Ashley, who has read all the proofs of the volume, and offered many helpful suggestions. Two chapters have already appeared in print. Almost the whole of Chapter III was published, under the title The Employer's Place in Distribution, in the Quarterly journal of Economics for October, 1895. Chapter XIII, on the wages fund at the hands of German economists, was published, in essentials, in the same journal for October. The Wages of Labour (Classic Reprint) by William Graham Pdf

Excerpt from The Wages of Labour HE standard economists have discussed at I length the economic and other considerations which underlie the wages of labour, and there are, of course, innumerable books deal ing with particular aspects of the problem. Written in the midst of great pressure of Parliamentary and public work, this volume makes no claim either to literary excellence or to elaborate analysis of the fundamental difficulties of remuneration. All that it attempts to do is to summarize briefly some of the immediate issues, especially in the light of post-war economic conditions, and to suggest a wages programme for employers and workers. To the main sources of information the author has acknowledged his indebtedness in a brief biblio graphy. He desires, however, to pay tribute to the valuable suggestions of his friend Mr. James Munro, m.a., formerly Beit Lecturer in the University of Oxford, and also to those of his constituents in the Central Division of Edinburgh who have from time to time placed many interesting facts regarding wages systems and rates at his disposal.
