War Party by Louis L'Amour Pdf

Bud Miles was a boy when he crossed the Mississippi. But Bud buried his father after an Indian attack, and as the wagon train pushed on through Sioux country, the boy stood as tall as any man. . . . Tell Sackett killed cougars at fourteen and fought a war at fifteen. Now Tell was hauling dangerous freight—a soldier's wife and a fortune in gold—knowing that someone wanted him dead. . . . Laurie Bonnet was a mail-order bride who thought she was a failure on the frontier. But when the chips were down, she was the only one who could save her husband's life. . . . In these marvelous stories of the West, Louis L'Amour tells of travelers, gunfighters, homesteaders, and adventurers: men and women making hard and sudden choices and fighting battles that could cut a person's life short—or open up a bold new future on the American frontier.

War Party in Blue by Mark van de Logt Pdf

Between 1864 and 1877, during the height of the Plains Indian wars, Pawnee Indian scouts rendered invaluable service to the United States Army. They led missions deep into contested territory, tracked resisting bands, spearheaded attacks against enemy camps, and on more than one occasion saved American troops from disaster on the field of battle. In War Party in Blue, Mark van de Logt tells the story of the Pawnee scouts from their perspective, detailing the battles in which they served and recounting hitherto neglected episodes. Employing military records, archival sources, and contemporary interviews with current Pawnee tribal members—some of them descendants of the scouts—Van de Logt presents the Pawnee scouts as central players in some of the army's most notable campaigns. He argues that military service allowed the Pawnees to fight their tribal enemies with weapons furnished by the United States as well as to resist pressures from the federal government to assimilate them into white society. According to the author, it was the tribe's martial traditions, deeply embedded in their culture, that made them successful and allowed them to retain these time-honored traditions. The Pawnee style of warfare, based on stealth and surprise, was so effective that the scouts' commanding officers did little to discourage their methods. Although the scouts proudly wore the blue uniform of the U.S. Cavalry, they never ceased to be Pawnees. The Pawnee Battalion was truly a war party in blue.

A Growing Nation by Robert A. Miles Pdf

This book, that has been 22 years in the making, is the first printing of the R.A. Miles Collection of the Southwest History from 1831 to 1889. It’s in chronological order by events and dates, and is a true and revealing account of the American history of the Southwest. It is an impartial, sometimes disconcerting, portrayal of the expanding United States westward. History is not always pleasant, but that is how it transpired sometimes in those years, and this book recounts both favorable and adverse events that need to be told. This country was expanding! It was growing; there were many heroes, many battles and many tragedies in the expansion of this country. It was like a glass of water sitting in the frigid cold. It froze and began to expand, the expansion could not be stopped, soon the glass burst. The final results were predictable and inevitable. The expansion couldn’t go east because of an ocean, it could only go west to the other ocean, and that it did. This collection is about the events that transpired during the mid to late 1800’s as a direct result of that westward growth. I have traveled these mountains for 7 of the 22 years in researching this book, from El Paso, Texas through Silver City, Lordsburg, Las Cruces and Stein, New Mexico and into Apache Pass in Arizona. I've explored Carlisle Canyon and drank the water at Goat Camp spring in Goat; journeyed through Camp Canyon, Hells Canyon, Steeple Rock Canyon, Red Rock, Crookson Peak and more. I have followed the trails of the old Butterfield Stage Line and found an old stage way station. I have found and taken pictures of over 150 old gold and silver mines and listed their histories, and listened to stories from an old miner as old as I am. What is most important, is I enjoyed every minute of it... Robert A. Miles

Sackett by Louis L'Amour Pdf

William Tell Sackett had followed a different path from his younger brothers, but his name, like theirs, was spoken with respect and just a little fear. Where Orrin had brought law and order from New Mexico to the plains of Montana, backed up by the gunfighting talents of his brother Tye, Tell Sackett’s destiny drew him to Texas after he had to kill a man. There, in the high, lonesome country, he came upon a vein of pure gold. All he’d wanted was enough to buy a ranch, but he soon learned that gold had ways of its own with men.

The Party's Over by Richard Heinberg Pdf

The world is about to run out of cheap oil and change dramatically. Within the next few years, global production will peak. Thereafter, even if industrial societies begin to switch to alternative energy sources, they will have less net energy each year to do all the work essential to the survival of complex societies. We are entering a new era, as different from the industrial era as the latter was from medieval times. In The Party's Over , Richard Heinberg places this momentous transition in historical context, showing how industrialism arose from the harnessing of fossil fuels, how competition to control access to oil shaped the geopolitics of the 20th century, and how contention for dwindling energy resources in the 21st century will lead to resource wars in the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America. He describes the likely impacts of oil depletion, and all of the energy alternatives. Predicting chaos unless the U.S. -- the world's foremost oil consumer -- is willing to join with other countries to implement a global program of resource conservation and sharing, he also recommends a "managed collapse" that might make way for a slower-paced, low-energy, sustainable society in the future. More readable than other accounts of this issue, with fuller discussion of the context, social implications, and recommendations for personal, community, national, and global action, Heinberg's updated book is a riveting wake-up call for humankind as the oil era winds down, and a critical tool for understanding and influencing current U.S. foreign policy. The Women of the Arrow Cross Party by Andrea Pető Pdf

This book analyses the actions, background, connections and the eventual trials of Hungarian female perpetrators in the Second World War through the concept of invisibility. It examines why and how far-right women in general and among them several Second World War perpetrators were made invisible by their fellow Arrow Cross Party members in the 1930s and during the war (1939-1945), and later by the Hungarian people’s tribunals responsible for the purge of those guilty of war crimes (1945-1949). It argues that because of their ‘invisibilization’ the legacy of these women could remain alive throughout the years of state socialism and that, furthermore, this legacy has actively contributed to the recent insurgence of far-right politics in Hungary. This book therefore analyses how the invisibility of Second World War perpetrators is connected to twenty-first century memory politics and the present-day resurgence of far-right movements.

The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party by Michael F. Holt Pdf

Here, Michael F. Holt gives us the only comprehensive history of the Whigs ever written. He offers a panoramic account of the tumultuous antebellum period, a time when a flurry of parties and larger-than-life politicians--Andrew Jackson, John C. Calhoun, Martin Van Buren, and Henry Clay--struggled for control as the U.S. inched towards secession. It was an era when Americans were passionately involved in politics, when local concerns drove national policy, and when momentous political events--like the Annexation of Texas and the Kansas-Nebraska Act--rocked the country. Amid this contentious political activity, the Whig Party continuously strove to unite North and South, emerging as the nation's last great hope to prevent secession.
