Warriors and Peasants by S. O'Rourke Pdf

Warriors and Peasants depicts the lives of the Don Cossacks in late Imperial Russia. The dual identity of the Cossacks, that of the steppe and of the settled Slavic areas, is emphasized as the key to their unique culture. The book explores how that identity manifested and preserved itself by focusing on the Cossack tradition, their economy, their families and their communities. Far from being moribund and close to collapse, the book concludes that the Cossack tradition remained among the most vibrant in the Empire.

Peasants, Warriors, and Wives by Keith Moxey Pdf

In Peasants, Warriors, and Wives, Keith Moxey examines woodcut images from the German Reformation that have often been ignored as a crude and inferior form of artistic production. In this richly illustrated study, Moxey argues that while they may not satisfy received notions of "art," they nevertheless constitute an important dimension of the visual culture of the period. Far from being manifestations of universal public opinion, as a cursory acquaintance with their subject matter might suggest, such prints were the means by which the reformed attitudes of the middle and upper classes were disseminated to a broad popular audience.

Insurgence by Jorge Sanchez Pdf

Being a teenager is tough. Especially when you have to live in the jungle and carry an assault rifle.Eighteen-year-old Gabriel and his twin sister, Samantha, join the revolution after death squads murder their parents and ransack their small village. A new totalitarian regime has taken control of the country, and as the army moves through the countryside – leaving destruction in its wake – it becomes clear to Gabriel that no matter which side you're on, nobody wins. The rebels face daily hardship and live under constant fear of counter-insurgency patrols, and Gabriel learns the hard way that the most dangerous threats can sometimes come from within. But adversity forges character, and Gabriel finds a mentor in the form of Sergeant Yos, his immediate superior and former soldier who left the army under mysterious circumstances.Armed with nothing but cold war relics and bravado, Gabriel and Samantha lead the rebels' efforts to take back their land, as long as their luck holds and they don't run out of ammo. Hell-bent on stopping them – and squashing them under his booth – is an army major with few scruples and zero qualms about destroying the young insurgent group, whatever the cost. Can Gabriel and the rebels hold out long enough to make a stand against an implacable foe, or will they be crushed under the weight of the largest military in Central America?Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Cuchumatan Mountains and the lush, green countryside of the Guatemalan highlands, Insurrection is a glimpse into the lives and emotions of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, in the name of love and country.

Rulers, Peasants and the Use of the Written Word in Medieval Japan by Judith Fröhlich Pdf

This book provides new insights into the creation and use of written texts in medieval Japan. Drawing upon lawsuits from Ategawa no shō in central Japan between the early eleventh and early fourteenth centuries, the author analyses the use of writing by various social groups - temple priests, warriors and peasants. Though these social groups had different levels of literacy and accordingly followed different communicative traditions, their use of writing had common features. In the semi-literate society of medieval Japan the dissemination and reception of written texts took place primarily through speaking and hearing. Documents of the medieval period therefore had a distinctly oral characteristic. Priests, warriors and peasants all alluded to motifs in their legal pleas that were in essence given by the oral world of tales, legends and gossip. By showing that literacy was not in conflict but interacted with orality, the author uncovers an important aspect of the use of the written word in medieval Japan.

Merchant, Soldier, Sage by David Priestland Pdf

From historian David Priestland, Merchant, Soldier, Sage is a remarkable book that proposes a radical new approach to how we see our world, and who runs it, in the vein of Francis Fukuyama's The End of History We live in an age ruled by merchants. Competition, flexibility and profit are still the common currency, even at a time when Western countries have been driven off a cliff by these very values. But will it always be this way? David Priestland argues for the predominance in any society of one of three broad value systems - that of the merchant (commercial and competitive); the soldier (aristocratic and militaristic); and the sage (bureaucratic or creative). These 'castes' struggle alongside the worker (egalitarian and artisanal) for power, and when they achieve supremacy, they can have such a strong hold over us that it is almost impossible to imagine life outside their grip. And yet there does come a point of drastic change, usually because one caste becomes too dominant. The result is economic crisis, war or revolution, and eventually a new caste takes over. Priestland argues, we are now in the midst of a period with all the classic signs of imminent change. As the history of the last century shows, there is good reason to be fearful of the forces that this failure may unleash. Merchant, Soldier, Sage is both a masterful dissection of our current predicament and a brilliant piece of history. The world will not look the same again. Reviews: 'We have here a gripping, argument-led history, efforlessly moving between New York, Tokyo and Berlin, from the Reformation to the 2008 economic crisis ... dazzling ... here, at last, is a work that places the current crisis in a longer history of seismic shifts in the balance of social power' Frank Trentman, BBC History Magazine 'Concise but extremely ambitious ... well worth pondering and reflecting on ... among the many contributions to the dissection of our current predicament, this is surely one of the most thought-provoking' Sir Richard J Evans, Guardian 'Stimulating ... In illustrating these larger processes of caste conflict and caste collaboration, the author offers crisp portraits of entrepreneurs, economists and warriors ... Sparkling prose and ... arresting comparisons' Ramachandra Guha, Financial Times About the author: David Priestland has studied Communism in all its forms for many years, in both Oxford and Moscow State Universities. He is University Lecturer in Modern History at Oxford and a Fellow of St. Edmund Hall, and the author of Stalinism and the Politics of Mobilization. The Red Flag was shortlisted for the Longman/History Today prize.
